More Mega Man from Chad Thomas
Chad Thomas, the interior artist for issues 5-8 of Archie’s Mega Man comic, has posted a new sketch to his blog. After seeing his Ice Man and Cut Man the other day, now he gives us the Blue Bomber himself!
“My take on the character has come a very very long way from the initial stuff that was released, the sketch variant, and the Short Circuit back ups I did for the first few issues,” he says in a new post on his blog. “I saw some of the finished art for issue 05 and I’m so thrilled with the turn out. Gary Martin, Matt Herms, and John Workman are just KILLING it, and Ian’s worked up a real solid 4-parter that I think everyone will enjoy!”
You can see the new piece at a fuller scale below. Thanks to Sockie for the tip!

Now, THIS is more like it. Ian and Lea weren’t kidding when they told me at Comic-Con that Chad Thomas’s art has greatly improved.
Hey I like this style. Hm.. guess I’ll get my fix from the comics.
Why didn’t Spaz run at least 12 issues?
@ Tornado Man
Considering his track record, we’re kinda lucky he did four–understand he’s also doing interior art for the big ‘Sonic Genesis’ four parter over at Sega’s book. Coupled with the fact he’s still doing all the covers, plus he does a lot of behind-the-scenes design work even when he doesn’t draw the issues themselves. He’s a great artist, but he can only take so much work at any given time.
Chad Thomas has indeed come a long way, and seeing work like this in full color will be great.
Finally Chad’s Megaman is looking like he should. If the art on his issues look anything like this, I have no worries
Wow, that’s still surprisingly on model. That’s a pleasant surprise.
Even though I like Spaz’s art more, this is a GREAT improvement! I can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Whoa, that’s actually pretty good.
While I love Spaz’s art, I have but one thing to say on this:
No crotch bulge!
Much better.
It’s not on the same level of detail as Spaz’s work, but it has vastly improved since the first sketches. Good work, Chad!
Fingers crossed that this guy has some concept of storytelling.
looking better now!
cant wait!
@MaddogExplosive: If you mean “Is he the writer?” then no, that’s still Ian as far as I am aware. All of these are separate people when it comes to comics.
@ Phaelin (and by extentsion MaddogExplosive)
I think he means in the context of art and layout. The writer may write the script but the artist is just as responsible for telling the story and being able to draw pretty pictures and being able to use those pictures to clearly convey a story are two different things.
Chad Thomas has drawn a number of comics before, so yes, I think he knows what he’s doing.
Ohhh nice. Chad, I am impressed. Your style is growing on me.
I met him here in Austin. He signed my variant cover and drew me a bust of mega. Really nice guy, super down to earth.
Shotoman got it 100% right. The truth is, Spaz’s art drives me insane the way every panel almost literally explodes into all the other panels for no reason at all. His figure drawing of these established characters is gorgeous; his layouts are a mess.
Looks good, unless they changed colorists as well I doubt at the end of the day you’ll be able to tell much of a difference unless you were specifically told.
Having said that I do hope the writing improves for this next story arc and Oil Man and Time Man are actually threats instead of shooting targets.
Ooh, I REALLY like what I’m seeing now, if I wasn’t impressed by the Cut Man and Ice Man already. Keep this up Chad!
I don’t understand why they use different artists for one comic? Am I the only person who likes continuity in their collections?
I’m not saying Chad Thomas is a bad author, because he’s not, but what’s wrong with consistency?
@HeatPhoenix
Spaz is a busy man he’s still got to do two Sonic comics every month, throwing a Mega Man one on top of that is probably brutal. As for consistency comics change artists all the time it’s not that uncommon really.
@Bob
He never asked if Spaz was too busy to handle anything or the way comics usually work, he stated “I don’t understand why they use different artists for one comic”. I think (and I don’t know just a guess) to build ground on the publisher’s part by not having to depend on a single artist. For the artist, could be to keep active in that they try new things, or maybe money.
Way to go, Chad! I was worried, but… I think it’s safe to say you got it going ON! YEAH!!!
I was worried with the stuff I saw early on, but this really IS quite an improvement. I’m actually pretty glad that Chad Thomas put in the time and effort to improve. Kudos!
(@HeatPhoenix) Are you new to American comic books? Comic series have always switched up artists. And Bob, Spaz doesn’t do both Sonic books.
Ah I didn’t know that I really don’t read the Sonic comic so sorry for the misinformation.
Spaz is, however, doing the big Genesis 4 part–with much more traditional layouts than in the Mega Man book–does a good number of covers and a lot of design work. Busy guy.
Actually, Yes. I am new to American comic books and as much as I am loving this series I’m not sure how I’ll be able to handle changing artists for every arc… well, if they keep to the character model, I’ll be fine I guess.
