Proto on Proto: A Kotobukiya Figure Review
As longtime fans know, for many years, Bandai’s Rockman 8 Ironbuster Blues model kit long stood as perhaps the best example of an action figure or model kit based on the prototypical older brother of the Blue Bomber. But more recently, a company by the name of Kotobukiya has gotten into the model kit game and began producing a line of product which has so far included Rockman and Roll, who both preceded the mighty DRN-000, and are slated for an eventual Western release.
Of course, you’ve probably seen the pictures, and while those are worth about a thousand words each, sometimes you still need to know more about a product before buying it. And that’s where today’s feature comes into play.
One fan by the name of Protoman X, who runs the ProtoRetro reviews channel on YouTube, tipped us off to his latest edition, in which he thoroughly examines his namesake, as well as provides a little history lesson of what Blues/Proto Man has gone through to reach this point in his collectible lifespan:
If that has whet your appetite, then don’t forget that we are currently running a Valentine’s Day fanart contest in which the winner gets to take home one such figure!
ProTip: Tabby will probably give more points to someone whose picture features Proto Man wining, dining, or otherwise romancing her. Just keep it clean, and the rules are here for further reference.

BUBBLEMAN GIVES YOU BUBBLE LEAD, NOT THE AIR GUN. DX Sorry, I just had to point that out… >n>
umm… Bass, not Bass….
^lol
That’s damn sexy. Too bad I’m far to poor to buy any of them.
“Tabby will probably give more points to someone whose picture features Proto Man wining, dining, or otherwise romancing her.”
Heh, I knew this contest was just an excuse for Tabby to live out her fangirl dream, but I believe her character is Louhi, not a self-insert. What’s her background anyway? I see lots of pictures, but no story.
That is cool and all but where is my Forte figure Kotobukiya?
Now now. I will be fair about the contest. Drawing me in there doesn’t guarantee one a win. You do get brownie points though.
@Glitcher – oh boy. Louhi used to have a back story, but then I decided I was a crappy writer and gave up on her. Basically, she was a robot from another planet who was trying to blend in with the reploid culture on earth. She primarily did bounty stuffs for the Mavericks. And she could eat ANYTHING. So metools were a yummy snack. She would also chew on X’s arm if she got a hold of him.
She was pretty much a sue though, because of course I gave her my personality. I was in middle school at the time. So sue me ;_;
Eventually a friend said “You know, you may hate the story, but you like drawing her and her design is neat. Just keep her as your avatar online” and here we are.
A lot of the part frames were reused from Megaman (I guess it makes sense given how similar their bodies are; several of the frames says ロックマン instead of ブルース at the top), which is why there’s the extra torso, the Megaman helmet parts, and even the grey E-Tank. It seems a little lazy on Kotobukiya’s part, but at least it makes sense… and hey, they could be used for a special weapon color for Megaman?
Still, really happy about this line from Kotobukiya… it’s pretty much made me forget about Jazwares’ junk… and I’ll be even more pleased if they make a Bass kit (but it seems like Megaman Zero will be next…).
