Capcom Reveals Trailer for Street Fighter X Mega Man (Update)

Remember that fan game which featured Mega Man taking on various characters from Street Fighter? Well, guess what?

Capcom has just revealed via the trailer above that it is going to be an official release to celebrate the 25th anniversary of both Mega Man and Street Fighter. And better still? It’s going to be a free download for PC (admittedly not so good if you don’t have a good PC gaming controller).

capcom-unity.com/mega_man has all the details, and the game will be available on December 17th, the 25th anniversary of Mega Man.

It may not be the grand spectacle that people were hoping for, but at least this seems to show that Capcom is definitely still thinking about the Blue Bomber.

Update: Now that the site is loading again, have a press release. Also added the link to the story for the original game above.

    I can’t take any more of this constant barrage cynicism. A new, fully featured game would be GREAT, but I don’t think I’m Capcom’s bitch because I’ll settle for an awesome looking FREE game. The 8-bit Megamans are my favorite Megamans, so yeah, I’m kind of hyped for this. Sorry if my settling for less means that I’m a fickle fan who will settle for whatever corporate turd Capcom throws my way. Hell, I don’t care if they don’t announce anything else in the immediate future. Let them release a GOOD Megaman game when they have their act together…god knows its been a while. I’m sure a lot of people would be happier if this Megaman x Streetfighter thing wasn’t even announced.

  2. TheDoctor says:

    @OmegaMan I would certainly say so (assuming it’s true, anyway). As of late, I’ve felt that CoA has been more sympathetic to our cause than CoJ.

    At any rate, my initial reaction was less than enthusiastic because I first thought it was going to be more like an 8-bit Street Fighter game than an actual Mega Man game. Thankfully, I was proven wrong.

    Now to the pros and cons of the whole thing.

    Cons:

    Street Fighter gets first billing.

    It is, for all intents and purposes, a fan game.

    It’s still 8-bit.

    Pros:

    It’s a full fledged Mega Man game with legitimate gameplay (i.e. not Xover).

    It’s free.

    Anyone able to download it can play it (this equates to almost anyone with a flash drive and a local library).

    It’ll be out in time for Mega Man’s 25th anniversary.

    Gameplay looks pretty good, and admittedly, the 8-bit Street Fighters look kind of cute.

    All that said, they should release it on Steam. It’ll get a bunch of downloads there.

  3. someone says:

    Looks good, and I guess the 8-bit street fighters make up for the fact that mega man is still 8-bit.

  4. Pedro says:

    What Capcom of America did was awesome, plain and simple. Taking a fangame, licencing it and releasing it for free? Awesome

    Look I know that Capcom of Japan hasn’t been all that caring for megaman latley but at least this show SOME effort on the part of Capcom of america. I can also appreciate how some of you guys still feel burn from the last two years.

    But would it hurt to at least give the game a genuine TRY before bashing the hell out of almost everyone involved?

  5. Duckaiser says:

    This looks pretty cool. Nice to see a fangame get official support, rather than say…a cease and desist (hello thar Crono Trigger fangames!)

    Anyway, Street Fighter is first in the title because calling it Mega Man X Street Fighter makes it sound like it’s Mega Man X, when it’s classic Mega Man. Got it?

  6. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

    FINALLY! An actual official game that looks promising. Not that Xover crap, but an ACTUAL FUN-LOOKING GAME.

    Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m so getting this. It’s looks fun and awesome, and frankly I like that it’s a free game celebrating Mega Man, along with Street Fighter. But here is my only drawback:

    It’s 8-bit.

    I mean, we’re in the year of 2012 and we’ve gone so far in the field of graphics. And it’s still 8-bit? It’s as if Capcom can’t let go of the past.

    So yeah, I’m more excited for this than Xover and I’ll definitely be getting this, but yeah, 8-bit? In 2012?

  7. A-Guest says:

    @ZeroX_Syaoran

    You know it’s not made by Crapcom, right?

  8. ZeroX_Syaoran: It’s as A-Guest says. Plus, it was presented to them this way, so it’s not as though they asked for it to be in 8-bit.

    Besides which, retro graphics are considered a stylistic choice now. Mutant Mudds sure receives a lot of appreciation for its retro look.

  9. Omar says:

    ZeroX_Syaoran (god that internet alias)

    stop it man. some of us love 8 bit.

  10. lamarfll says:

    The series needs to more on past 8-bit, Capcom seems to think that’s all we like.

    Making a 8-bit game shows little effort on Capcom’s part, and it’s not going to appeal to many newer gamers.

  11. RedrazerZero says:

    @Omar
    Relax man, he’s on a topic of redundancy, not of personal feelings toward 8-bit in itself. Also some people don’t have to obsessively love 8-bit, ZeroXy(that’s what you get friend) could very well want to see new graphic styles while liking or at least holding respect for the 8-bit style like myself. To be frank most gamers behave like this with their favorite game series (appreciation for the old expectations of the new)…

  12. Kage says:

    Call me a wimp if you will, but I am hyped as hell for both of these games. I just hope that they are compatible with Mac. Otherwise, I have to hope that WinOnX will make it work, or I will have to try downloading XQuartz again so Wine will work…

  13. Vanya says:

    @lamarfll:
    I think it’s pretty obvious from the nature of being part of a 25th anniversary that this is in no way intended to bring in new players. This is for no one else, but us fans.

    Should CoJ be working on some kick-ass new hi-res game? Of course they should. But I’m not going to complain about a Company recognizing they’ve screwed up and that they needed to do SOMETHING to begin making amends. I think it would have been stupid to turn down the opportunity to help bring us something made by a fan for the fans.

  14. shinpichu says:

    Fangame or not, this looks pretty cool. I wonder who the remaining 2 bosses(besides Ryu, Blanka, Chun-li, Dhalsim, Rose, and Rolento) will be.

  15. Bob says:

    @shinpichu

    Urien and C. Viper, there was a screen at the event it was announced of the stage select.

    You can even see Urien in the trailer if watch carefully enough, he’s the boss Mega Man kicks.

  16. lamarfll says:

    @Vanya:
    You’re right, and I completely agree with you, this something for series 25th anniversary, and the fans who’ve been who it along the ride.

    I was just talking about Capcom (of Japan, because I know after all this that US Capcom cares), they’re going to have to do something.

    It’s ok to have 8-bit games, but doing it over and over, again and again starts to make it lose its charm over time.

    This is just my opinion here, but I’d love for a new 32-bit Classic game, in this day and age I’m sure it would come out better then MM8, and have as much better love/hate relationship then it.

    Make the main games longer, there way to short for video games now, and if you’re worried that it’s too long just make it Wily Wars like, I found the idea of 3 games in one, plus a final area really good.

    And I think they should finish up there other series (X, ZX, Starforce, and maybe Legends, but that series is so lighthearted it needs no ending like Classic) before starting up some series.

  17. lamarfll says:

    “a” much better love/hate relationship then it.

    :/

  18. Vanya says:

    I agree. It would be great to have the Elf War game for X, and a couple more ZX games at least. Obviously they should finish what they started with MML3. There’s ridiculous support for that game.Hell, while they’re at it why not a 3DS update of MML2 & MML2? Reintroduce the series to a market that is much more used to 3D gaming than it was back then.

    And to go way out on a limb, why not continue giving some basic support to fans that want create more classic 8-Bit action? Hell, make a contest out of it. I’m sure lots of fan projects would love an opportunity to get their project officially endorsed.

  19. Omar says:

    Here’s an idea: Make MML3 for the WiiU and bundle it with MML 1 and 2.

    Who am I kidding we’re not going to get mml3

  20. lamarfll says:

    @Omar:
    You never know, and I’m still waiting for Viewtiful Joe 3 myself, VJ is my favorite Capcom series, and VJ2 just like MML2 ended on a cliffhanger, but you can’t tell the future Legends 3 may happen.

    I just hope when that day comes that both Aero and Barrett come back, the fans picked that Aero, and I find both of them really interesting.

  21. Matt says:

    Even though he was causing massive carnage at the end, the little 8bit Blanka makes me lol with his detail and little antics. lol

  22. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

    @Omar: I’m actually considering changing the name. XD But I kinda like how it is now. XD

    But I get it. People love 8-bit. But what I’m saying is that my opinion is that 8-bit shouldn’t define a franchise.

    Yes, this game was made by a fan, I get that now. But what I truly mean is that Capcom, in future games of their making utilizing the Mega Man name, shouldn’t focus on 8-bit. Yes,a throwback is nice time and again. But when it starts to dominate how a company thinks a fanbase thinks of the Mega Man name, I think 8-bit needs to stop. Not stop fully (I love 8-bit games myself), it’s just that not EVERY game has to be 8-bit.

  23. Omar says:

    @ZeroXYZ_SoraKH3

    Well of course it (one thing) shouldn’t define a franchise or make up a lot of games. Mega Man is a lot of things, just like Mario is New, Kart, Party, and Galaxy.

    Personally, I’m okay with classic MM being an 8-bit experience. That style has always been strongest for him, versus MM7 and MM8 styles. He’s never been better.

    Maybe Classic MM isn’t for you? Maybe the right MM for you is X, who’s best interpretations were 16bit or from the X4-6 games. Perhaps Volnutt is to your liking, which is the “Zelda” experience of MM games. Or maybe you’re into that rpg stuff with Starforce or whatever.

    All in all, my point is that you’re stating the obvious.

  24. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    @Vanya

    A remake of legends 1 and 2? Nope not gonna happen due to quote on quote vocal rights and a few other dumb excuses with licensing attached to make us believe they can’t do it. When in reality back in the late 90′s they were able to without a problem. Oh ,but now they do. If they could redub it and change a few things than I can see that happening ,but as current as in how lazy CoJ is they would just simply port the game which is the normal thing I have done numerous times with any game of theres ,but not so much with the legends series ,but they could port any other game even the ones with the english vocals and be fine. Well I suppose licensing does expire given a certain amount of time so maybe that could be explained the way and capcom hasn’t renewed it or refuse to do so.

    The things with Legends is whats preventing is the original VA’s, a few songs most notable is Little Fuggie which is Rockman Juno’s theme and battle and thats 2 versions right there and I think there was another original composition in soundtack store in that game. And this is only Legends 1.

    In Legends 2 it has to be again VA’s and that darn 100 question quiz that only 99 of them are actual facts of math, history, ancient history, europeon history, geography, sceince and pop culture well if they didn’t mess up a few questions usually concerning years. And apparently there is licensing problem right there which makes no sense as all these should be common things a lof of people should know unless you are from elsewhere or you just simply don’t know the stuff.

    If they change those aspects thats how it would be possible for a port or even a remake ,but I want the original VA’s and music to be there ,but since capcom is unrealistic with their money goals and expects a hot seller in one week after getting to stores thats not gonna happen because they can use the past sales data and say oh this didn’t do well then why bother or put effort? I really if anything blame them for poor advertising because back in the 90′s they were infamous for never using any form of advertisement granted I think the 10th anniversary and maybe BN4 thanks to the anime was the only known commercials I’ve seen for anything megaman in america oh and I suppose nintendo power and the cartoon ,but by the late 90′s hardly anyone likes to read magazines and we were getting used to the net which made magazines obsolete to some extents. Note I might be forgetting something so someone please correct me on this.

  25. DarthMagus says:

    Honestly, are you people never satisfied? I don’t know how many times over the years I’ve read something like “I wish major game companies worked with the fans.” Now, a major game company is working with a fan made creation and the majority of you are calling the company “lazy”. Or a thief or any number of downgrading terms. What the hell do you people want? So you’re not getting Legends 3 or X9 yet. Boo freaking hoo. Be grateful that you’re getting something at all.

    For the record, Capcom has worked with fans before. Don’t forget that not too long ago, they used fan made remixes from OCRemix to create the soundtrack for the Super Street Fighter II HD Remix game. As I recall, they actually reached out to OCRemix about it, not the other way around.

    I want new games that further along the timeline too, but as a true fan I appreciate any effort made to release content. This game looks enjoyable and I can’t wait to try it out. In the meantime, I will wait patiently for more canon content.

  26. RedrazerZero says:

    @Omar
    You knew he was touching on a graphic hardware limitation and not a game-play design issue right? Let me ask you this… What if Capcom invested into a new graphic style (hypothetically speaking) and it became your new favorite, or better yet used the MM-RM8 graphic style but tweaked its physics and the result ended up getting critical positive reception all around, what would you say to those scenarios? What you said is like the equivalent of someone saying, well Metal Gear Solid’s best game was in 32-bit it should stay that way.

    @lamarfll
    I need, Veiwtiful Joe (salty tears)……….

  27. RedrazerZero says:

    *Viewtiful… (more salty tears)…..

  28. lamarfll says:

    @RedrazerZero:

    “Metal Gear Solid’s best game was in 32-bit it should stay that way.”

    You mean 16-bit, back when it was just Metal Gear, and not Solid. :P

    But I would love graphics like MM8 and MM&B, they where really nice looking games.

    I’d love voice actors like MMPU, Cole Howard is so far the best English voice actor for Mega Man.

    Also again in my opinion MM8 and MM&B had the most creative powers in the series, but I will give MM9 the benefit of the doubt, it made all of the weapons feel like they had a use.

    8-bit is something I enjoy also, but Classic is the overall main series, so it’s very likely to get the most games made, I’d like 8-bit to be used sparingly, so it doesn’t lose its charm.

  29. DarthMagus says:

    @lamarfll:

    Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 were both 8-bit. MGS was 32-bit. There was never a 16-bit MG or MGS game.

  30. lamarfll says:

    @DarthMagis:

    Derp, I just remembered that, I was thinking of Metal Gear 2 when I typed that, due to that game looking a lot like a 16-bit game, my bad! lol XD

  31. Omar says:

    @Redrazer

    That wouldn’t happen. Fewer people like MM8 over MM2 than vice versa.

  32. RedrazerZero says:

    @Omar
    More people like MM2 over MM6 (I guess), that has nothing to do with graphics….

  33. lamarfll says:

    Graphics don’t make the game, it’s the whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing.

    If you have a good formula of making great games, you can work on other things, …like graphics being one of them lol. :>
