Experience the Excitement, the Thrills, the Action of Rockman Xover Right Now!

A common refrain (and one we’ve visited before) from within the Mega Man fandom (and perhaps even from outside as well) is that Capcom’s upcoming social game Rockman Xover looks basic enough that a fan could have done better. And while we don’t know whether that’s true or not, it seems clear that about three fans can pretty closely replicate the experience.

Uploaded to Newgrounds recently was a game developed by three fans (PressStart, BroToad, and Cutman Mike) and, according to the author’s comments, is “a copy of Rockman Xover‘s core gameplay made [in] under 24-hours!” based on the screens and footage we’ve seen thus far.

We’ve been receiving a number of tips about this, but before saying anything, we decided to consult an expert for his opinion. Well, sort of– as we all know by now, our own Heat Man was at the Tokyo Game Show recently and got to try out some of the game, giving us some footage and his thoughts here. With this experience under his belt, we felt it best to get his thoughts on how this compared to the portion of the demo he partook in.

“I guess it’s more or less pretty close,” Heat notes, with only a few minor differences. “For example, I didn’t notice enemies dropping cards, but then those would have had no use in the demo anyway. Also, I have no idea if the skip button in the boss battle actually just ends the battle – I never played the boss battle. Personally, I had assumed the skip button just skipped the boss’s attack animation.”

Heat adds that he’s not sure of any other footage of the game online besides his own (as representatives at the show took issue with cameras being used to record it). However, he does point out that some people are apparently uploading footage of the Newgrounds Flash game and claiming it to be the real deal, which could cause some confusion among fans (though if anyone doing so includes the ending of the game, we like to think people would catch on to which version they’ve just seen).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Press Start found time to contribute to a game? That’s interesting lol

  2. GeminiSparkSP says:

I just played it yesterday. Not much can be said, but at least someone at TVTropes thought that Capcom just didn’t care making a decent demo.

  3. rockman says:

I don’t get the boss fight, there is no strategy or anything at all.

  4. LanceHeart says:

    @rockman
According to Heat’s preview, that’s pretty much the case of Xover’s fights.

  5. McWhalen says:

It is good to see it in its proper place…with all the other half-assed flash games

  6. erikthered says:

I figured it wouldn’t take anyone with some experience to make it in less than 24 hours.

Now I dare someone to take Xover’s concept, and make it into something people would actually like!

  7. Phaelin says:

That was actually a bit fun, about what you could expect from an iOS (flash in this case) game. Plus, the actual game will obviously have other things going on with it. No complaints here.

  8. UFOLoche says:

This is not what you should expect from a flash game. For the love of Christ, this thing is going to be on the same platform as Song Summoner!

  9. UFOLoche says:

Excuse me, *IOS, got jumbled for a moment cause they’re so bloody alike. >_>

This. So much this. With fan games like Mega Man X Corrupted, Rokko Chan, and the recent Mega Man X3 hacks just imagine what the fans could do.

  11. Louisblack78 says:

Yeah, would be great If one or those super fans could take the concept and now make the Real Rockman X-Over fangame :D

  12. “Now I dare someone to take Xover’s concept, and make it into something people would actually like!”

I wholeheartedly agree. I love the concept behind this game, but the execution is horrible. Somebody should try to go out and make “Rockman X-Over: The Good Version”.

  13. DuoDynamo says:

Not exactly thrilling, but I laughed hard at the ending.

  14. Halcreix says:

This is just hilarious, in many ways.

  15. TheMaverickk says:

I don’t know what’s sadder…. that they replicated exactly what I thought this game would be like….

Or that this game is going to be this way.

  16. Masodx says:

Grats to the people that make this .

3 hardcore fan base > Capcom

  17. Vanya says:

Or that this game is going to be this way.
I’d say what’s more horrifying is that they made the graphics look vastly superior just by running them through a filter or two.

  18. Vanya says:

    I meant pathetic not horrifying

  19. Byte Man says:

Kotaku called this a slap in the face to Capcom from the fans.

    Sounds about right to me.

  20. ProtoZero says:

This game potential is capcom give tit to this game no. but from what i’ve played i think of it as Megaman x+Auto scroll levels in SMB3.

  21. Erico says:

So, how many monkeys at Capcom’s game development did it take to make Rockman X-Over? More than three?

Now they know better. If you’re going to put a team together to make a game, make it a good one…or the fans will one-up you just for the Hell of it.

  22. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

“Now I dare someone to take Xover’s concept, and make it into something people would actually like!”

THIS. I so totally agree. While we’re at it, let’s make a good story to go along with the game! XD

  23. SketchMan3 says:

@rockman: It’s kind of like an RPG battle. You choose an attack. it hits the enemy. Your enemy chooses an attack. it hits you.

Pretty straight forward, ya know? Of course in the real game it will most likely be a bit more complex than the way it is portrayed here, like it is with OTHER RPGs, where elements, attack styles, special moves, buffs, etc come into play.

You know. Like other turn-based RPG battle systems.

    Cuz it’s an RPG.

  24. jad says:

Man for a good battle system in this. If they wanted to make it good. They should have gone with MMBN’s system. I’m all for a remake fans take on this horrid use for words game. So much could HAVE been done to make it epic. Brovo to fans though, they really showed truly the little effort it takes to make a game like this. Hell if it can be made in Multimedia Fusion so easily, (A point and click program, HARDLY any programming) Then that’s even more bad karma to them. Capcom if you have any shed of light on your actions. STOP moving this direction quickly. But it could be to late.

  25. Green says:

I think we just need to ignore this and move on instead of pretending it’s the end of the world. Vote with your wallets and don’t buy it if you don’t want the game to move in this direction.
