Character History

Dr. Light was the leading mind in the world of robotics, and after graduating at the top of his class in electronic engineering from the Robot Institute of Technology, Dr. Light devoted his life to the research and development of robots that aid in world peace. Even though his first attempt at building a humanoid robot had a fatal flaw in his energy processing device and disappeared, he was able to correct the issue with his later models: Mega Man, Roll, and the Robot Masters.

One day Dr. Albert Wily, an old school mate of Dr. Light's who had never quite been able to match his skill[1], reprogrammed Dr. Light's industrial robots in a bid to take over the world[2]. Light's lab assistant, Rock, volunteered to undergo a transformation which would allow him to put a stop to Dr. Wily's mad ambitions.

Dr. Light would continue to support Mega Man every time Dr. Wily returned, creating various support items, partners and upgrades to help Mega Man on his adventures. A few times, he's been the target for kidnapping in Dr. Wily's plots. [3]

After Wily made several attempts to conquer the world, Dr. Light noted that perhaps what robots needed in order to avoid such conflict was the ability to determine what was right and wrong for themselves, thus foreshadowing what would arguably become his greatest creation.[4]

Note: The US manual for Mega Man stated that Dr. Wily had worked with Dr. Light as an assistant prior to the games, and that the events of the game took place in a city called Monsteropolis. Later releases, including Mega Man 8 and the Official Complete Works, have followed the original telling of events from the Japanese games.

Ruby Spears Animated Series

The Ruby-Spears version of Dr. Light is the same as the Dr. Light of the games, except with changes derived from the US instruction manuals.

In this version, Dr. Light is the creator of Rock and Roll, but the co-creator of Proto Man, his collaborator being Dr. Wily. When Proto Man was first activated, he went on a minor rampage. When Light shut it down, he realized that the problem was in a program that Wily had made. Despite Wily's protests, Light decided to restart from scratch, which infuriated Wily. Wily would steal Proto Man and the plans, fixing Proto Man and using the plans for himself. Undaunted, Dr. Light designed a new line of robots, designed to help out in other jobs. The first five of these being Rock, Roll, Guts Man, Cut Man, and Ice Man. However, Wily reappeared, took over Guts, Cut and Ice Man and kidnapped Rock and Roll. When Rock and Roll were able to escape, Light realized that to combat Wily he would have to modify one of his robots to face him. Rock would volunteer and become Mega Man. It is also revealed that he would create the robot Mega Man X.

Dr. Light in the series is shown to be a great scientist. However, whenever one of his machines is introduced, more than likely Dr. Wily will be there to ruin it, forcing Mega Man to save the day. Like all the other character designs, Dr. Light is depicted as taller and slightly muscular than the usual.

He was voiced by Jim Byrnes.

Notes

  • Early designs of Dr. Light showed him as a short and serious looking scientist with a mustache. These designs would later be refined into the friendly Santa Claus-based design we know.
  • Just like Wily, Dr. Light's name has been subject to some confusion in translation. In the US release of Mega Man, his name was translated as Dr. Wright. This was the name used in his brief appearances in Captain N. Humorously, his Battle Network counterpart "Tadashi Hikari" uses the japanese words for "Correct (right)" and "Light," respectively, as his name, suggesting that both translations of "Dr. Light/Right" are correct.
