What are the Infinity Stones?

With Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite only mere months away from release, some of you who might be a little less familiar with the Marvel side of the equation may be wondering just what the deal is with these “Infinity Stones” (aka Infinity Gems) that not only factor into the gameplay, but are apparently a big enough deal that the Deluxe Edition of the game includes LED light-up replicas of the six jewels, complete with their own fancy box.

Alternatively, you might also be a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet still not quite be familiar enough with the source material to know what these Macguffins that keep popping up are all about.

In either case, Linkara of Atop the Fourth Wall is here to help. As a part of “Event Comics Month,” he takes us on a look back at Marvel’s big The Infinity Gauntlet crossover story which brought the gems to prominence.

Consider this your history lesson as you prepare to take up arms as Mega Man X (or one of the many other playable characters) to stop Ultron Sigma from using their power to wreak havoc across multiple planes of reality (something the latter part of that entity is no stranger to).

Of course, do bear in mind that things have a tendency to change from one continuity to the next, and what holds true for one may not hold true for another. What is fact in the Marvel comics may not necessarily be fact in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is said to skew more towards the latter than its predecessors, some elements may be changed there as well.
