Mega Man Makes Lists of Greatest Sidekicks & Awesome Plot Twists

die-wily

Wow, it seems like Mega Man sure is showing up on varying lists lately.

Okay, so Mega Man didn’t technically make the list of greatest sidekicks– rather, two characters from Mega Man (i.e. the franchise) did, just to get that out of the way. Both Rush and Zero are on Dorkly’s list, which you can find here, and was apparently voted on by readers. And for those ready to raise issue with Zero’s inclusion, just be sure to read the entry first.

The other instance is Mega Man 7 appearing on Topless Robot’s 7 Awesome Videogame Plot Twists That Were Never Followed Up On. Of course, as we all know, Mega Man could probably fill that list by itself, but it’s still cool to see sites beyond our circle remembering moments like this and including them.

So give both a look and feel free to discuss in the comments. Oh, and do note that both sites tend to feature language, themes, etc. which might be NSFW, though these two articles seem relatively safe.

Megaman 7 was always one of my favorite classic series games, that ending only made it better. I was so excited to see how they’d follow it up in MM8… then nothing :( Megaman’s Maverick moment forgotten forever.

  2. Andrew Conti says:

because he never said it in the original Japanese script.. Its It is a drastically different conversation between Rock and Wily

  3. If I’m not mistaken, though, Rock did still pull his Buster on Wily, which still had similar potential that wasn’t really followed up on (at least until 9 or thereabouts, and even then, only just).

  4. Andrew Conti says:

Yes. In the Japanese 7, he still pointed his buster at Wily threateningly, however, the impact of the entire scene changes dramatically when in the origjnal, upon being reminded he is a Robot and Wily is Human, Rock is literally left speechless, because he is not “more than a robot”.

  5. HeatPhoenix says:

I’m not the only one who DESPISES when localization is more than just translating the material, yes?

  6. Andrew Conti says:

You are not alone. MM7 is a translation that really just kills me because of that, and so is X2.

  7. Raycon Prime says:

    I would debate that.

Rock doesn’t reply, but the fact that he pulls the buster on Wily in the first place begs the question.

If Wily hadn’t reminded Rock robots weren’t supposed to harm humans, what would have happened? I can’t help but wonder.

That said, I agree that they shouldn’t have changed something like that.

  8. Jose says:

He who hesitates is lost – Bass.

  9. I’m torn. On the one hand, yeah, less accurate and can fudge with things to come later, as this demonstrates.

On the other hand, one might argue that this improved it– it certainly had the fandom talking for years (if not to this very day, considering) and really seemed to ignite imaginations more than the original might have.

  10. Yes indeed. I’m an 80′s kid and having gone back and gotten direct translations of the old classics I grew up with I’ve concluded that most localizations are garbage. I see it like this, the original game designers were trying to convey something and when the localization changes what the designers’ intentions were we loose something fundamental about the game. Localizations should stick to simply changing things that are culturally unknown like changing a rice balls to potato chips. They should refrain from changing the tone of the story.

  11. Omar says:

What was wrongfully translated in X2?

  12. Omar says:

Maybe Rock forgot he was a robot.

  13. HeatPhoenix says:

I agree. Though even the rice ball thing is a toss-up to me personally. Maybe it’s time for the world to truly know about rice balls instead of donuts (YEAH, THATS RIGHT IM CALLING YOU OUT 4KIDS.)

  14. HeatPhoenix says:

True, but they were ignited over something the original designers did not intend to be in the game and never consented to. I feel like it is desecrating someone else’s creative input.

  15. TuxedoMoroboshi says:

It’s been a while since I’ve played X2, but I do remember feeling both peeved and weirded out that X was constantly referred to as simply “Mega Man”, and not X or even Mega Man X. Granted, I played X2 after I was pretty familiar with the X series, but seeing Sigma refer to X as “Mega Man” felt really off to me.

  16. Andrew Conti says:

Serges comes off as just a lackey who obsesses over a “prophecy”, where in the original, he is compared (in the manual) to “the legendary mad scientist”. Also, he is the ONLY person other than I think, Dr. Cain to call X by the name “Rockman X”, and refers to him as Light’s “robotic memento”.

Also, suddenly Sigma has Zero’s blueprints, according the X2′s localized Zero dialogue.

  17. That scene from MM7 reminds me of one of Dr. Weil’s quotes in MMZ4:

“Zero, do you want to become a Maverick in front on her [Neige]?”

Ironically, I think that if Megaman had killed Wily at that time, he not only had become the first Maverick of all, Zero -and maybe also X- won’t exist too. But anyway, Megaman killing people isn’t just right, even if it’s Dr. Wily

  18. gutsman004 says:

Even after all these years, the debate about this rages on. I’m just glad no heated arguments or flame wars broke out like I used to see back in the day. It is after all, just a story.

  19. HEZ says:

Well, I never knew about the translation, news all these years later! But even so, regardless of what’s said, he still pulls his buster on Wily… he at very least considers it. It’s one thing to disobey (like Bass) but it’s another for a robot to think about shooting a human. I felt like this was the moment when robotics took the first step towards Reploids. Like… Light analyzed Rocks brain afterwards and saw changes had occurred, he had become “more than a robot”.

  20. nexilis says:

“X most memorable moments, hold on I’ll get back to you”

  21. Or maybe he was, in fact, more than a robot.

  22. I feel like Zero’s overrated. He’s a cool character, but I don’t think he was a great character in the X series. Reviving him for his own sake misses the point of why he died in X1: he was the mentor that X was meant to follow and grow into. Instead, popular demand prompted his return in X2, which culminated in a lackluster finale that rehashed X2′s standoff, made Zero look even cooler than X (as if he wasn’t cool enough), and set up for the Mega Man Zero series. He’s played out and could use a rest.

In hindsight, I regret how things turned out for the X series, and that’s partly why I don’t love the Zero and ZX series. They’re still great games I and anyone else can enjoy at a whim, but I seriously don’t love them as much as other people do. They just don’t give me the same kind of satisfaction that the SNES X games did, for several reasons, which leaves me hungering for an X9 or a full-on reboot of the series. Maybe I’m being too hard on Zero, but that’s too bad.

  23. RedrazerZero says:

They had concepts of his X2 design before X1, the Zero series was being planned before the release of X5. Zero was always planned to continue on with the series, in fact he was suppose to be X, if anything X was created do to popular demand…

  24. I’m aware of all of that, and I agree. Zero should’ve been X, or vice versa. X should’ve “become” Zero in a sense.

I don’t disagree that X also enjoys popularity that carried him into future series. I just think he should’ve had more focus in his series in terms of game and even visual design. For example, I think it would’ve been both awesome and appropriate if X retained upgrades like the double-shot and the air dash, leading to sequels that are designed based on the newly established movesets. Another cool development would’ve been expanding the cross-charge upgrade from X3 into a weapon-splicer. That would’ve been awesome! But what we saw instead was Zero inheriting some of these moves and having them carry over into future games.

  25. Raiding the Reploid factory in X2 is a pretty awesome moment. Also when he wastes Vile in X1.

  26. RedrazerZero says:

I see where you’re getting at. You basically want a more established series, since the series was made for X despite how it got that way, there should be emphasis on X in the series…

  27. Yeah, that’s pretty much how I feel about Zero. Relative to X, I think he just gets too much love. I might be more inclined to liking the character were he better balanced, but that’s not to say I totally dislike the character. Overexposed is the best term to use, I think.

  28. He’s a super fighting robot!!
