Behold the Fruits of Your Labor: The Rockman 25th Anniversary Collaboration

mm25collageWe want to kick 2013 off on the right foot, and what better way than by showing off the fruits of the labor many of you have put towards completing the Rockman 25th Anniversary Collaboration, which you can see but a glimpse of at right, and in its majestic entirety here.

The collage is a part of Hi-GO!’s 25th anniversary fan book, R-GENERATION 25, which features the work of over 69 Japanese Rockman fan artists. In fact, the sheer number of participants is part of what caused a bit of a delay in releasing this (in addition to the organizer’s personal matters). The group behind this project explains:

Dear participants,

We had to inform this more earlier: Just before we finish editing, we got a suggestion from the organizer of ‘R-GENERATION 25′, which is the collaborative fan art book project for 25th anniversary from Japan, to take place on a space in the book to put in our collage project.

We accepted this suggestion, as both projects shares the same goal – to celebrate blue bomber’s birthday – and it was too sad that those similar collaboration projects for 25th B-day are working seperately.

However, the deadline was too soon to contact each of over 150 participants to get permission for the publication, so we decided to inform this with our completed collage which will released before the release of ‘R-GENERATION 25′
But the editing has been falling behind, so there was some people who noticed about our collage on ‘R-GENERATION 25′ today, the very day the book is released. And our editing is eventually finished just after the book is sold out, so we happened to post this letter now.

We are very sorry about the delay, and our unconsidered attitude about the publication of collage without permission. and we also apologize to the organizer of ‘R-GENERATION 25′, for causing the trouble in this way.

Although this unpleasant trouble happened, we sincerely hope everyone to enjoy both of our 25th B-Day collage and R-GENERATION 25, as it is 25th anniversary for blue bomber.

Again, Thanks to you all the participants very much.

Thanks,

25th B-Day collaboration council

Amunshen has also offered apologies for the lateness of this project, and also tells us that “sadly it will be the last collage held by Argent_fox (Eunho) because she’s getting busier and busier with her university work.”

Thanks to Amunshen, as well as everyone else who made sure we were aware of this (we were; we just wanted to get all the details straight).

It sucks I wasn’t able to get Dynamo and Allouette done for the collage, I ended up getting way too busy myself – busier than I had anticipated when I signed up for the submissions. But for all those who did participate, awesome job, guys. :)

  2. RedrazerZero says:

I really like Kin Niku and GO!`s contributions…

  3. SuraidaChan says:

There was bad communication problems, and I thought that I’d be out of the collab, but thankfully both my entries made it in (I’ll never know what that supposed requirement that wasn’t “fulfilled” was).

But yeah, it’s fun seeing everyone’s unique art styles and works. Everyone should be proud of themselves for a job well done. ^^

  4. Wait–so this is part of a book? How do we get copies?

  5. RandyPandy says:

The different art styles looked a bit strange together, but then again, that’s what happens with collabs of this style. xD All the pieces looked amazing, though. Wonder what that “requirement” was – I know some people who’s pieces didn’t make it in.

  6. I’m personally fucking pissed about this collab.

I had a piece done for this, hand-drawn, scanned and colored, and submitted on time. I had it in over a week before the final due date, and yet I got an email, TWO WEEKS after the due date, saying that my piece was being rejected because:

-The main collaborator dislikes the character of Green Shinobi (Star Force 2)

-It “did not follow the rules”.

I went onto the page again, reread it in both it’s English and Japanese translations (can’t read Korean, though) and it had AN UPDATE TWO DAYS PRIOR TO THE FINAL DUE DATE that HAND DRAWN ARTWORK WAS NOT ALLOWED, REGARDLESS IF IT WAS LINE-ARTED AND FINISHED ON A COMPUTER!

Which is total bullshit, because I know without a doubt that at least HALF of the final entries shown, HAD HAND-DRAWN ARTWORK.

They straight up lied, and I bet there’s other people who slaved away and worked hard on their entries, all to just get rejected because the people running the show are just assholes.

And even if they simply disliked Green Shinobi, it doesn’t make any sense, because it was ACCEPTED at the first time when I signed up for this.

    Ugh..
    Fuck these people. >_>

  7. Like Amir, I have a few issues with the collaboration myself, though not as strongly worded.

First of all, I am grateful for the opportunity to have taken part in this collab, and it was an honor to be drawing alongside so many talented artists. Kudos to the people who organized this, and gave a lot of us the motivation to draw characters that we know and love in this fandom.

And now, on to the issues I had with this thing.

First of all, in my opinion, once it appears in a Capcom authorized work, it should be fair game. I remember submitting a request for Bad Boxart Mega Man, and he was rejected for not being in a MM game (he appears on the cover for Mega Man 1 and was a planned character for Universe, both of which actually complies to the rules). I call bull on that, because he is -still- a version of Mega Man. As for Amir’s complaint, I’d also like to point out that personal bias against certain characters has no place in a community project. It’s unfair to reject work because you don’t like the character. (By the way, I’d like somebody to tell me how Green Shinobi wasn’t legal when the rules clearly state that alternate version of characters are?)

Secondly, I have an issue with some of the artists. Not the ones who completed their projects on time, I’m talking about all of those who called dibs on a character, had close to a month and a half to finish the drawing, and did NOTHING. Do you have any idea how many people would have loved to draw your character? Better yet, what prevented you from fulfilling your obligation towards the collage? I know life catches up to us all, but here’s the thing. If you can’t finish it, it doesn’t take two seconds to mail the guy in charge of the collage and say, “Hey, I can’t finish my piece. Can you give my character to somebody else?” It’s called: “Common Courtesy.”

Want to know the shameful consequence of this is? Look at the MM Zero collage. Notice something missing? That’s right. ZERO. The main character himself, IS NOT IN HIS OWN COLLAGE.

If you can’t commit to your promises, don’t make them.

And while we’re on the topic of common courtesy, I’d like the collage people to know that if you can’t meet a deadline, you should try to put up an estimated time of delivery to pacify those who were anxious and waiting. We survived the Apocalypse without any word of this coming out. Also, I’m really surprised that the Mega Man Network took a little long to report this, considering that I tweeted them about this a day before they actually announced it was ready.

Maybe I should assemble my own Mega Man collage project next year, and I’ll let you guys in on it. Make something really great, and there won’t be any rules about who you can’t draw (if it’s MM and canon, it’s all good!), set an established deadline (or at least notify everyone with an alternate one if I’m running late) and really churn out something we can all be proud of.

But like I said, don’t view my post as hating on this. It’s honest critique, and I submit it in the hopes that you guys will take a hint and improve on this situation next time.

  8. rnn says:

Our stuff is not part of the book. The R-GENERATION 25 deal is a completely separate project that happened to coincide with this collab.

  9. @facebook-1634942597:disqus
Umm, first I’d apologize what happened to you, on behalf of the organizer.

Though I don’t know exactly what problem was on your entry (cuz I was participating just as one of normal participant this time) I don’t think they rejected your entry just because they simply didn’t like Green Shinobi character. Perhaps, it was because your entry was hand-drawn… If my memory is right, the rule that denying the entry of hand-drawn art was existing since the very start of the recruitment.

Also, you say “at least HALF of the final entries shown, HAD HAND-DRAWN ARTWORK.” but I don’t see any ‘hand-drawn art’ in completed collab… what they wanted was only “the artwork done in Computer graphic”.

Well anyway, it is true that the check and notification was too late and this is definitely their fault that you didn’t get the chance to re-entry your art because of the late. I did have no idea such a mess is going on the project…I believed they gonna do it well without my help this time -_-

  10. Thank you for gentle critiques. too bad we cannot accept it for next time because there won’t be next one from us.

Indeed this one was such a bitter one for both of organizers and participants…I feel terribly sorry for such things happened.

  11. It was held off for two reasons:

    1) I thought it would work well as a New Year’s post.

    2) I actually hadn’t been following the project closely myself, and had to scramble make sure I had all the pertinent information I could get before posting.

  12. SuraidaChan says:

My works were originally hand-drawn sketches, and then completed in CG (colored by a friend, who sadly wasn’t credited), and my entries were accepted. From my understanding of the rules, the artworks had to be CG. I really don’t think it should matter if people did the works primarily on computer, or if they traditionally sketched it out, then finished up digitally, so long as the final product is a CG work.

    But this whole project was full of terrible communication. I also received from them, telling me that I “didn’t fulfill a requirement,” without even telling me what that failed requirement was. I emailed them asking what it was so we could fix it (even though we made sure we followed all the requirements on the site), but they never got back to us. But in the end, my entries were in, and while I was glad about that, I wished they could’ve at least let us know that they made a mistake and assured us that things were okay instead of letting us worry and thinking we didn’t make it. ^^;

  13. ………..Oh……….well, about that bad communication problem… basically that’s just like what I said about it on my twitter:

“First to say, technically I’m NOT moderator of this collaboration. This whole collaboration thing is my friends’ idea since last time, and what I am doing is just advertising(using auto tweets) and helping them sometimes(just when I have additional time) So, basically the warning mail or response are their work. The problem is, there are two moderators on this collaboration, and one of them can speak only Japanese and another can speak only English. And the email address they are using is originally belonged to the Japanese speaker. He can’t speak good English, so there might have been some rude response, or somewhat misunderstanding, but it’s simply because he cannot speak English well. Me and the English-speaking moderator tries help this whenever we have time, but unfortunately both us are busy for school work this month…Especially in my case because I’m working on portfolio for art college.”

Welf, Since first time I indicated them that I’m not able to help them this time because of my life matters, and I thought they will do it well because with those two they can communicate both Japanese and English….but it seems I actually overestimated them-_-……. too bad I didn’t have enough time to stick to the project and settle each communicating problems one by one like last time.

  14. It’s okay. Like I said, I was grateful for the opportunity to take part
in this collab, and I’m sure many of the artists here were, too.

    I
felt like saying my two cents on the matter because I want to see this
kind of thing evolve, and to me, those were the issues that needed to be
addressed. Thanks for hearing me out.

  15. They says they decided not to allow the hand-drawn art cuz they got a lot of trouble while editing and combining hand-drawn arts last time.

  16. Excuse me, I just got excess to the mail you sent from the organizer guy and it appears you just sent black&white HAND-DRAWN WORK with PENCIL. as I said above, they had the rule that DENYing black&white HAND-DRAWN entry from very first stage, so you have no excuse about being rejected. also, they provided you chance to resubmit, and it is you that didn’t try to resolve it by trying CG. You got the response from them on 27 Nov, and they gave the chance of re-submission until EST 2012 Dec 3rd 11:59 PM, PST 2012 Dec 3rd 06:59 AM. You responded their mail the same day you got it, so you recognized they’ve given you the chance for re-submission with 6 days. so, definitely you can’t blame for them because it is you that didn’t try to resolve it by trying CG.

It murders my computer too D:

  18. Stop crushing my dreams! MOM!!!

  19. Hypershell says:

If I’m not mistaken, the whole hand-drawn-vs-CG thing basically boils down to “transparent background with a clean border”. My art most certainly started as a hand pencil drawing and was accepted after being lined/colored appropriately.

I figured that as a matter of common sense, but the english texts of the collab page did not make that clear. As a matter of fact, there were certain areas that outright told you otherwise, suggesting instead either a white background or a “translucent” image.

And…that’s all I’m gonna say. I don’t really want to get into the middle of anything too heated, just offering my observations on the matter.

  20. I am sorry about what caused the delay for the organizers to upload the collage, but at least we know what has happened now. And I’m also so sorry that people are angry from this project, and that not everyone’s art could be used, or time and life didn’t allow them to finish. u.u I know that your heart is heavy, but please don’t feel you wasted your time drawing the art for the collage. See this as a cause for renewed drive to continue drawing what you love from the Mega Man Universe. <3

Regardless of these circumstances… it was very cool and lots of fun to contribute to this collage, and it is great to finally see it! So here's to Mega Man, for another 25 years!

Happy New Year, y'all. Now, how about some of that everlasting piece… of CAKE!!! ^w^

  21. They’ve obviously deleted the entry I sent, or you’re willingly forgetting that important part.

  22. Whatever, I officially have stopped caring anymore, anyways.

  23. Do you have the actual entry you sent, though? I was under the impression that they rejected your character because they didn’t like him. If they rejected it because it was hand drawn, those were in the rules since the start. (They said CG only)

  24. I was honestly under the impression that they rejected his artwork because they didn’t like his character. I’ve also noticed that Amir hasn’t uploaded the final version here as proof (only WIP sketches), he needs to do that if he wants his argument to hold any water.

As for the no-shows, I’m disappointed in particular at those who took Atlas (I wanted to draw her, damn it), Thetis and Aeolus (because of it, Siarnaq is awkwardly standing alone in the ZX collage) and Zero in the MMZ collage, which was a huge letdown because of his absence. People’s lack of commitment ruined some of the collages here.

But to those that did commit and really put some shine into it, it looks awesome.

  25. All the same, thanks for putting your time and energy into it. Despite the grievances, we’re really appreciative of your sacrifice.

  26. I kinda figured as much after a while, and I don’t blame you for that. Gotta make sure everything’s in place before you announce the big news, right?

  27. Yuan Zhang says:

I wonder what part of “offically stopped caring, anyways” do you guys not understand. XD

It’s all done and over with, so even if he posts the finished piece (that I helped with, btw), it’s not gonna randomly get shoved into the collaboration page, 3-4 days later.

  28. Yuan Zhang says:

What part of “officially stopped caring” did you not understand from him? XD
