Rockman Xover Reaches Top 3 on iTunes
Just days after releasing, Rockman Xover has achieved third place on iTunes’ Top Free Apps. While that’s not necessarily a feat in itself, the bigger news might come from it being #63 on iTunes’ Top Grossing Apps and climbing, ahead of Beeline’s (Capcom’s mobile subsidiary) and Capcom’s own mobile games.
That’s pretty good for a non-GREE and non-Mobage game. What’s more, of the 1,136 ratings, 889 of them are five star reviews. Most of them are admittedly referral codes, but that’s still at least 889 people who have the game and care enough to rate it and publicize their active participation.
From the little I’ve seen played of the game, it’s actually a huge step up from most Mobage games we’ve seen hit North America. This could definitely tear me away from my daily Tiny Tower sessions.

What’s a “Referral Code” people?
Also… does the top grossing list timespan means of ‘all time’ or only ‘This month/week?
Well anyway #63… not exactly high enough for people to start worry about the future direction of MegaMan, and also not low enough position for Capcom to start worry about the future of MegaMan either…
…a pretty good position, no?
This has got to be a joke, right?
Well, I see no real reaon to complain if the game is free.
I’m watching a lot of players with premium cards, that means they are expending real money on the game, and it’s not cheap. I’m not surprised about the reviews, when you leave the “hate” at one side, and learn to see the game for what it is, it’s a fun game. And yes it’s not the Mega Man we want and it’s full of flaws, that’s something that we all agree on.
Rockman XOver, a half-assed iPhone game made it to top 3? More than 800 5-star reviews?
*sniff, sniff*
I smell a conspiracy.
@Lumine1412
Referral Codes are user-specific codes each player gets and can be used by new players to indicate who invited them to the game. By doing so, the person who made the referral gets special bonuses, like exclusive content or in-game currency that usually costs money.
As for #63, don’t forget that I said “and climbing”. Most people are still riding on the game’s grace period of quick progression. Once that’s done, expect it to go higher until either players tire of it or Capcom releases more content updates to satiate the ones who pay real money to advance in the game.
@GeminiSparkSP
You have obviously never played social mobile games. It would be a conspiracy if the game had 10,000 reviews on its first day, most of them 5 stars. At this pace it’s well within normal ratings for new social games. In fact, the amount of negative reviews and people upvoting said reviews is the real conspiracy. You rarely get so many raging gamers on average social games, even ones from renowned “real” series like Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear.
Valkyria Chronicles doesn’t have a 25 year following, and metal gear is still getting games and has characters in both playstation all stars and smash bros brawl. Both series get enough love, so why would they get raging gamers?
Mega man has all but died… it has a huge fanbase and most of it is pissed, while the rest is just out of the loop or something, naturally, there will be a lot of raging gamers.
There are very few game series that have been been alive for 25 years and aren’t still being shown love.
You know, that icon they made for it actually looks reeeal sleek.
But one thing I want to know is, does the game get more enemy variety?
Because from what I’ve seen in a few videos, you could just play the game by putting down the system and mashing the fire button – you’d miss pickups from the aerial enemies, but you wouldn’t ever get hit, and from what I know, you can just do this while repeating stages to grind for everything.
You could have some moving toy play the game for you and it would actually be 100% playable >_>
” I’m not surprised about the reviews, when you leave the “hate” at one side, and learn to see the game for what it is, it’s a fun game.”
Have to disagree with you there. I’m seeing the game for what it is and it looks extremely repetitive and dull, Megaman or not.
That’s just an opinion and you’re free to disagree of course, but your wording makes it sound like it’s fact that it’s a fun game.
You can try and act like the only way people could see this as a bad game is because they are blinded by “hate” but that’s not the case.
@rockman: The game, looking at it for what it is, is dull, repetitive, sluggish, lazy, and monotonous. The hate comes from the fact that all that is being applied to a game that’s part of a franchise that is very starved at this point.
If you look at most freemium social mobile games, Rockman Xover is actually a lot better in that you have at the very least *some* semblance of timing required. The same can’t be said for games like Fantasica, My Monster Rancher, Dark Ring, Smurfs’ Village, etc.
If you look at the game for what genre it’s in, it already looks leaps and bounds better than its competition.
@erikthered
That still doesn’t justify bashing a game that’s clearly not made for them. It also shows how few of them there are compared to people who will happily play the game and not care about the haters.
At this point… I guess Crapcom is going to continue this series on iOS… And we will never see another true Megaman in any real console anymore…
Are you happy now conformists?
hahaha… You got to be… I mean really?… lol…
now they are going to make a sequel aren´t they?…
@LanceHeart
People are free to criticize a video game regardless of whether or not it was “made for them.” There is not justification needed.
These stats say nothing to me in regards of how many people are satisfied with the game or not. For one thing, as the article says, most of them are referral codes.
I wouldn’t look at those as legitimate reviews personally. They are seeking to gain something by saying good things about it. Not only that, but this sort of thing excludes all of the people who are unhappy with the product to the point that they won’t bother touching it at all, and as such can’t be bothered to review it.
I’d suggest a grain of salt either way folks.
I think the title of the article answers the question as to what “really” went wrong with everything.
@Raycon
Then they also need to understand that they come off as disgruntled people with nothing else to do. There is no need for them to review it based on other actions Capcom has made (I’ve read a few that simply rated it one star because DASH 3 was cancelled). Besides, whatever they thought would happen by flooding the reviews with negative comments was drowned out by people who don’t care what they think.
The reason for all the hate is that this game basically takes an all-star versus concept and a 25th anniversary logo and slaps it on a social game, when all other 25th anniversary projects have been gutted. What they’ve basically gone and done, is market a game designated towards a totally unrelated playerbase as “here’s your anniversary game, kids!” and whatnot. If that was not the intention, then they certainly screwed up their priorities.
Also, while the game might be leaps and bounds above other social games, that doesn’t mean that the game is by any means good. It just means that other social games are worse.
There is no conspiracy behind the hate. Just bad marketing.
@LanceHeart
I think you’re generalizing a little too much. I do agree that this game should be reviewed on its own merits, not by the actions of the company who made it (though I do think it’s important for people to know about what the companies have done, that sort of thing doesn’t have a place in a review.)
But to say that all people come off as disgruntled simply because they have problems with it, regardless of whether it was made for them or not, I think is too general.
For example. I know this game isn’t for me. It’s way too simple, it’s on a platform I don’t generally play games on, there are plenty of reasons.
That said, I don’t think me voicing what I think is wrong with the game is a problem and should reflect that I’m “disgruntled.” I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying what you think is wrong with a product as long as you explain yourself.
Now by all means, I don’t think anyone should look at the reviews like you mentioned, that don’t explain themselves outside of saying they are upset with Capcom over something unrelated to the game itself, but that doesn’t mean the people with legitimate complaints should just be ignored, or “drowned out” by those who don’t care.
And that actually goes both ways. Once again, the article says that most of the five star reviews are referral codes. That tells me they are giving the game a high score not because the game itself is good, but because they want to get something for writing the review.
Those reviews are no better than the ones you mentioned, because again, they aren’t judging the game on its own merit. Of course once again, if they explain why they like the game and have reasoning, then there’s no problem.
But to just blindly five star something, or to do so in hopes of getting a form of compensation. Those people could be viewed as nothing but “sheep” or “bought off” in the same way you would look at negative reviews as “disgruntled.”
That’s not to say those viewpoints are accurate necessarily, I’m simply pointing out that bias can make people write positive reviews just as easily as negative.
Well there you have it. Simple and dry there it is on top list in what a few days.
@erikthered
Simple there will always be someone out there that does not approve of something in their favorite set of games. And that someone can multiply into more numbers very quickly and once others make this same realization of the observation that there may be something they will not like. An example being metal gear rising I’ve seen a lot of hate because its nothing like metal gear at all. Another would be all the hype of MGS2 and once people found out raiden took the show from series icon solid snake that complaint amplified.
As for Valkyria it may have not been around long ,but there always be some sort of complaint somewhere. I ain’t no psyche guy or anything ,but the human mind is indeed a truelly unique and puzzling specimen.
@Lance Heart
Bra your points have balance to me I like that. brings a lot of things to consider ,but I already know I dislike it because social apps just isn’t my thing megaman or not ,but I can agree those other reviews were biased ,but I can understand why and frankly I already accepted that Capcom will not give damn about fans like us anyways. Even if people say oh we can influence them through not buying products of theirs or even if with I get into some sort of uproar thats not gonna stop them from making things like this if they believe that is where the money is and frankly that statement is proving quite true. Because guess what they are making money off of this via the downloadable content. This to me says they won because people the common consumers are purchasing that stuff even if the game was free the extra content will not be. and thats the name of the game.
I will always be passionate about megaman ,but I know this app game wasn’t intended for anyone other than to see if this game will work as a mean to justify that apps will be a money maker for capcom.
@Raycon
I wouldn’t take away from people who find the game genuinely uninteresting after having tried it, but most of the ones I’ve translated (the ones most recommended, of course) end up mentioning Mega Man’s 25th anniversary, DASH 3 or some other dislike of Capcom in general rather than the game itself. That taints a review’s bias by showing they wrote it with that mindset.
That severely cuts down on the amount of bad reviews that could be seen as legitimate, much like the ones posting referral codes shouldn’t be seen as legitimate. However, there is a proportional amount of reviews that don’t mention a referral code and simply praise the game.
The biggest issue is the “helpful review ” system, where you can agree with a review in order to push it to the top of the “most helpful” reviews. All of them are 1 star reviews, while the most unhelpful reviews are all 5 stars.
Almost all of the 1 star reviews condemn Capcom in one way or another with or without commenting on the game itself. That’s where “disgruntled” comes from, since you don’t need to have downloaded nor played the game to agree with a review.
@LanceHeart
It’s unfortunate that they choose to focus on things other than the game itself, but I still wouldn’t write all of the negative reviews off completely as being illegitimate, depending on what they say in the reviews.
The fact that those negative reviews are being pushed to the top further pushes the idea I had earlier, about the number of people unhappy with the game not being bothered to write a review. It’s much easier to just push someone else’s to the top. They fail to realize they would make a much stronger point if they said in their reviews why the game was so bad.
I know we can’t say for sure how many of those people who agreed with reviews played the game or not, so for all we know they all have and simply weren’t bothered to write reviews. Conversely, none of them could have played the game.
It’s impossible to say. If you want to look at that and say it’s simply because they are disgruntled, you’re free to. I think there may be a number of them who are, but I don’t think I could even say it is a majority of them in good conscience. That’s just me though.
I’ve seen the gameplay, I’ve played the flash version, I don’t need to try the actual product to know what kind of experience I would be getting, and I know it would be one that I would write a negative review about, but the thing is I can’t be bothered to. Because I feel that way, I can understand how others would too.
That’s just from my perspective though.
As for the positive reviews, how many of those can be considered legitimate? By that I mean, how many of them talk about the game, say what they like about it and actually seem to care about their own review?
Again, it’s something that works both ways, positive and negative.
If I may ask, how have you been able to read the reviews? I’d like to look into this more myself.
Even at its worst, pared down to almost nothing, Mega Man is still better than most other games.
I’ll be honest here. I haven’t played Xover yet, but it doesn’t look like it’s a horrible game. But here’s the problem…
Imagine, if you will, that you ordered you favorite food at a restaurant. For the sake of argument, let’s say it’s a big, juicy steak and a baked potato loaded with everything you could possibly want on it at any one time. Now, the chef cooks it up to the best of his ability, and you can smell the food coming from the kitchen, and you know it’s going to taste amazingly good…
However, before the chef has the waiter bring the food to your table, he takes the steak and potato, and instead of placing them both on a plate, he goes out to the alley behind the restaurant and he gets the lid off of the dirtiest, smelliest garbage can back there. He puts the steak and potato on the garbage can lid, and has the waiter bring it out to you. Suddenly, you don’t think the food is going to taste so great. And that, you see, is the problem.
It’s all in the presentation. And that’s how Capcom delivered Rockman Xover to us; on a garbage can lid. no matter how good the game may or may not be, it’s all in how it was presented to us.
Weird? I guess this means there will be more IOS Mega Man titles, for better or worse…
I guess the Japanese really want to show how starved for a new Megaman game they are! I just hope Capcom does not misunderstand that as the Japanese wanting more Xover games.
@Raycon
I set my iTunes to use my Japanese account. That’s how I’ve been able to at least see them.
@TheDoctor
Capcom hasn’t presented Xover as anything more than a freemium social mobile game running on the engine of Mega Man X’s iOS port. There’s no misrepresentation of the game other than what gaming blogs (we’re one of them) and their comment sections have said.
I don’t think I’ve seen a single press release for this game, let alone an official statement that this game is the only direction they want to take in the future. We did that ourselves by putting our own fears and conjecture into the game’s announcement and release.
LOL! Its only in the top because its free. LOL! Now if people paid 1.99-3.99 people would be pissed and a hated game.
@Megafan
It’s topping the free charts. That means it’s currently #3 amongst all of the other free games and apps in Japan’s iTunes store.
@LanceHeart
I never said, nor intended to imply, that Capcom presented Xover as anything more than what it is. However, the fact is, this is the only game they have released so far for Mega Man’s 25th anniversary, after having canceled games that looked like they’d be something that you would actually want to play in your free time, as opposed to something you’d probably only play while waiting for a doctor’s office.
Those poor bastards never stood a chance…
I really prefer to play angry birds than this…
It’s not like that, people. Megaman Xover having a good classification doesn’t mean Capcom will start to look more to him. In the worst of hipotesis, she’ll start investing MUCH more in games for iOs using their own Mascot more than than any game of him to real consoles, which would be a GIANT ****.
Megaman doesn’t sell as much as it did. Maybe that’s why Capcom tried to make a mediocre game to celebrate 25 years instead of a SONIC GENERATIONS Megaman game for PS3/360. Se XOver is well received, you can be sure, Capcom WILL get the bad habit, and will start to make little silly games instead of actually awesome games.
I myself hope for Xover to be a failure, but a failure that would “save” the franchise. Because iOs just woulnd’t work. In some moment, i hope, she’ll release a game to a real console. THAT’S when we fans, get in and show them the force to make a REAL Megaman game sell.
On the contrary, if this game keeps giving them money, you can all wait sitting for a new game that is actually good. Because it will only come this **** ones.
And wrong is the one who said that XOver is JUST a Social game, that he came to us JUST with this objective. He clearly utilizes the concept of comemoration. A crossover with ALL protagonists?! In the 25th anniversary?! He IS a game to celebrate the date. The problem is HOW they used that concept. They got a GENIUS crossover idea and throwed it in the thrash, like it was an “Anniversary” present for the fans, a ENOUGH present for them, like the fans were 2 year old babies that content with anything their dads manage to buy them.
So, yes, Capcom presented more than a social game. They presented us a 25 year anniversary game made out of nothing but lazyness.
I will say this much. If nothing else, this proves that plenty of people still care about Mega Man.
Capcom probably bought temporary 3rd place ranking with money. That, or it’s so notoriously bad that it’s getting attention for it.
What I don’t understand is why some of us are so angry that a representative of a series we love, are getting ticked off at the fact it reached the top 3 of anything positive- despite the fact it’s a below sub par game. I can understand the anger from the fact the that the game really blows, but it just comes down to everyone sounding like “We the fans think that this game sucks! So no one else should like it!”
Eh. A free game’s a free game.
From what I’ve seen, it’s not actually a bad game, it’s just a bad MEGAMAN game.
Just think of it as a free facebook game or something like that, because that’s pretty much what it is and WHAT IT WAS MADE TO BE. Now, what would you rather play, Xover or farm/sims game #4325?
You don’t play Mario Party and then complain about how you’re not jumping on turtles.
@Lanceheart
wasn’t justifying the act itself, but simply pointing out that the scenarios are very different
@ManwholovesRockamusic
yes, but nothing has been done to overly enrage the MG fan base. Raiden taking the lead is comperable to Zero taking the lead in MMZ or Battle Network deviating from the series formula.
@Sammy
it’s a matter of personal interest, it’s not so much that fans are saying “we don’t like this game, so no one else should like it”, it’s more like “we ACTUALLY like mega man, we care about this series and we want Capcom to make mega man games we actually like! you have no personal investment in the series, so please for the love of Christ don’t ruin mega man for us!”
because, as you can see, most mega man fans that care enough about the series to waste their time on a site dedicated to the series and news about the series do not like this game at all. Most of the regular commenters here are disappointed by it. If people like this game, it will mean that the games we like may never exist again, and capcom will focus it’s efforts into games like this.
you’re talking about fans of a series that has been reviewed by almost everyone as a series whose formula hasn’t changed in 25 years, yet we still love the games. We want the same formula for 25 more years. we’ll tolerate spin offs, so long as our game isn’t threatened. if they were releasing this alongside MM universe, Legends 3, X9, or MM11, I don’t think it’d be an issue at all, but the fact that all of those series are in jeopardy BECAUSE of Xover, people are pissed.
@HF
it may not cost money to play, but the game does indeed come with a cost
Wow, this makes me want to get an i-phone and play this game…all day *makes bored face….turns, walks away*
@Raycon & TAG
Of course it was my opinion, everyone it’s free to like or dislike the game
The way I see the game, it’s you play 10-20 min everyday, collect some cards an have some fun, the game for me accomplished that goal. If you are going to play 3 hours a day with your Mega Man hardcore fan hat, yes it’s not that good Mega Man game or even a game. I understand all the hate or dislike for it, I really do, it’s justified but at the sametime the game is not fail as a social game in my opinion.
Does anyone knows what has happened to the other pages of this network, when I try to access music ot community on this network, it says its under maintainence. Could you explain this? Thank you.
@Rockman
That’s fine. As others have pointed out, if this had just come out as some side thing with the other Megaman games not getting cancelled, and if it weren’t being advertised as THE game for the anniversary, the reception wouldn’t be like it is. It may not be good, but it would probably be something that people just pass over.
I for one don’t get social games myself so I can’t comment on how it stacks up to others.
I don’t understand how someone could be bothered to play something like this more than once, but that’s pretty much how I feel about all social games like this, so it doesn’t really say anything worse about this game in particular, not that my opinion really matters in the grand scheme anyway.
I think you may have just explained it… it’s under maintainence
Oh… Well then I made a right derp, does anyone know how long this maintainence will endure? Because I have a fan fiction I have made I would like to see its progression.
@Okami Delta
The maintenance will go on throughout this month, since we’re trying to fix a few things that broke. We’ll be making a post about the in-maintenance content when the tech staff patches things up.
the same idiots complaining about this game all the time on this site are the same idiots that are downloading the game. if CAPCOM pulls in good numbers, they will make another one.
@The VW Reploid
Much as I hate to admit it, I think the finicky and often self-contradicting nature of fanbases in general would indeed validate your claim.
Granted, I would like to believe that a lot of the downloads are from incredulous people who think (a) it’s free to play; and (b) “it can’t possibly be as bad as people say it is”.
Note that this subset is distinct from people who think (c) “This game looks **** amazing and is a perfect encapsulation of all the BEST things about Megaman’s 25-year existence!” Also note that the actual population of (c) is roughly equal to 0.
@volkswagen Reploid
well, it falls to reason that they would have downloaded it in order to complain about it. people gave it a shot, and didn’t like it, and don’t want more of it.
I don’t think they’re counting the download number, but rather, they probably care more about how much money they actually make off it.
I personally will not download this game, first off, because I’m very anti apple, second, I’m very anti social gaming of this nature, and I’m very anti Xover.
I’m okay with this.
