To No One’s Surprise, Mega Man Makes “Worst Cover Art” List, But…
When Trigger EXE submitted a news tip a couple of months ago about Mega Man being on GamingBolt.com’s Top 50 list of the worst video game box covers of all time, we almost didn’t run it. After all, it seems almost mandatory by this point for Mega Man to be included a the top of these lists.
But that’s what gave us pause. You see, the Blue Bomber didn’t top this list; rather, he came in at #17. Not near the bottom of the list, but this means that there are 16 other pieces of box art being considered worse than the original Mega Man‘s.
So that leaves us to wonder what’s going on. Only a few years ago, it seemed that Mega Man should have received a Lifetime Achievement Award for the worst box art ever, if only to spare us the constant predictability. But now? Have game companies actually gone on to produce worse art? Or have people become more accepting of this cover, thanks to his semi-canonization as “Bad Box Art Mega Man”? Or, as Capcom’s treatment of Mega Man 9 and 10 have shown, is it simply so bad that it’s good now?

Well, this list in particular wasn’t really a Top 50 list. They just crammed them all in a list.
I really can’t blame them though. In order to actually make a Top 50 Worst list, that means that some poor soul has to actually compare them and figure out which one is ACTUALLY worse. And some of those covers are honest-to-God sins against nature.
No one should ever be put through that torture.
Well, I’m glad Phalanx is in there. To this day, I still don’t get that cover. Oh, and that Black Belt cover for the Master System deserves to be #1. The ‘artist’ must have put an amazing -10% effort into it.
@Random Red: No? I saw the tag “Top 50″ at the bottom and figured they were ranked. D=
@ LBD “Nytetrayn”
I wouldn’t say that it wasn’t worth putting up. After seeing some of those box art covers, I can come up with a pretty decent defense for Mega Man’s sake. There are WORSE out there.
Regardless, this was still entertaining, although some of those cover made me click the “Next” button faster than others…
I think covers that are misleading are far worse than ones that don’t say anything about the game at all. They had some of those higher than the misleading ones which I kind of disagreed with. Megaman was by far the most misleading of them all, lol.
@Random Red: It wasn’t really about being “worth” putting up, but merely “what can we say about this?” I honestly didn’t have anything for a while there.
I think one of the things to keep in mind is the Mega Man 1 box art is honestly at this point overplayed. Sure it’s bad but being referenced all the time sort of kills it’s impact you know?
Mega Man 1′s box art looks BEAUTIFUL compared to some (well, most, if not all) of those other boxarts, my goodness!
Well…Without adding much more pics of the actual game on the list some covers are not bad, and in this case If we didnt know anyth about Megaman the cover would be in fact pretty good….
hahaaha! Irritating stick, phalanx, and karnaaj had me rolling on the floor laughing at how pathetically bad they are!
Still think Ultimate Duck Hunting is the most hilarious. Also if you were raised in the 80s I bet you it reminds you of how ludicrous the original Duck Hunt is.
How can anyone hate Phalanx’s box art? It’s weird to put a banjo player there, sure, but it isn’t bad. Some of these things were born of some drug-induced nightmare.
However, I think there’s Super Bust-A-Move that really takes the cake here. That one was really bizzare and irrelevant to the game it’s supposed to be about.
