Mega Man: The Wily Wars Gets New Release on SEGA’s New Handheld

Alright, everyone: Let’s play a game of “Good News, Bad News.”

Good News: Mega Man: The Wily Wars is finally seeing a re-release in the U.S.!

Bad News: You have to buy a new portable system from SEGA in order to play it.

Good News: The system only costs $60, and comes pre-loaded with 79 other Genesis games! That’s less than a dollar a game!

Bad News: According to Sonic Retro, manufacturers At Games and Blaze are not known for their hardware producing quality emulations, with sound and graphical emulation errors reportedly being common among their releases.

Bad News: It won’t be released for Mega Man‘s 25th anniversary on December 17th.

Good News: If you’re still interested, it will instead be released on November 13th.

Further details from Siliconera note:

More games will be released for download on the Ultimate Portable Game Player, and you’ll be able to load them onto an SD card (not included with the device) that goes into an in-built SD card slot.

The Ultimate Portable Game Player will come with a 2.8” screen and a built-in rechargeable battery that you can charge with the included USB cable. If you have an AV cable (not included), you can plug the device into your television as well.

You can find the full list of games at Sonic Retro, including the other two Capcom games (hint: They’re both Street Fighter II).

Thanks to Rey A. Pilaro, Zakattack982, XD375, and HeatPhoenix for the tip!

You are welcome for the tip I did not give you.

    No problem, man.

  2. forpeace says:

This is really great, but too bad I already own the Sega genesis collection on PS3.

  3. Anonymous says:

Looks a little sketchy to me. SEGA is known for its quality games, true, but really they gave up the system manufacturing for a reason. That, and this isn’t even made by SEGA anyway, just endorsed. I’ll probably pass.

  4. NA says:

Most of us already own these, so there would not really be any point.

Make new games, not re-realease the same games 5 times, because you are getting less and less sales each time because nobody wants to buy the same game over and over again.

Already bad enough with street fighter games.

  5. BlazeHeatnix says:

Capcom will see how nobody buys this and they’ll say “well, I guess nobody likes Megaman anymore.”

  6. GadgetJax says:

Actually, this handheld was made by AtGames, a company famous for their Arcade Motion Dual Product. Note: The box says that it has 80 games. And, in a way, they’re RIGHT. however, only HALF of the games included are Sega and Capcom brand. the other half are cheaply made homebrew games that you will only want to play once.

  7. HeatPhoenix says:

    @Anonymous

They’re pretty good quality. Don’t hesitate if you’re afraid of the build quality.

  8. Bob says:

If there are concerns about the emulation not being perfect the game might not be able to save since that’s a fairly common problem with Wily Wars.

  9. RCase says:

I still wonder how legit this is. It looks and sounds cool but i dont wanna spend money until i know its on the level

  10. Puffball says:

Nifty thing, but I already have an actual Genesis and a lot of the games listed. Still, it’s a good buy for those who can’t find/don’t want to spend the money collecting the console and the games. I just hope the emulator quality is all right, since Retro’s warned about it already. The cautious ones can always wait for someone to break it down, so I’d expect a thread to pop up on Retro reviewing it not long after its release.

  11. Bassnium says:

Well if nothing else a wider audience now gets to hear Kinuyo Yamashita’s take on the Classic series sound.

  12. geminiwings says:

No Shining Force or Phantasy Star? I’ll pass, thanks.

  13. Airman says:

OHHHHH!!! SOOOO BUYING!!!! And yes, JUST for Wily Wars…everything else is just bonus…..so happy right now.

  14. …That list of games is crap. For one thing, what’s the point of having Sonic & Knuckles without Sonic 3? You shouldn’t even be playing either of them without connecting them to get the full story.

Next, what happened to Columns II? They’ve got Columns and Columns III, but not the second one.

Lastly you’ve got the list of arcade games, like Bottle Taps Race and Firefly Glow. Weren’t there better games Sega could have picked?

  15. SketchMan3 says:

    in b4 hacked for chiptune.

But seriously, It’s nice to see Eternal Champions getting some love. Sign me up, yo.

@KK The Prophet: They did say there will be more games to download, right?

  16. Advent Axl says:

Is Sonic 3 & Knuckles taboo amongst Sega’s game archive? This is an interesting piece I must share. . .

I’ll probably wait it out before looking to buy it. I mean They released the Ultimate collection and I paid $29 for it, reading about $60+ for the same games seems. . . Well terrible.

  17. rab says:

    @KK the Prophet
Columns II wasn’t on the Genesis. And those games listed in the Other Games section aren’t from Sega. They’re just cheap original games thrown on there for seemingly no reason other than to boost the game count.

Anyway, since it has SD support, you could probably just throw an S3&K ROM on there. Though the thing may not have save support, judging by the previous models. Which makes me wonder about Wily Wars…

  18. Munchy says:

Too bad about possible emulation snafus (and holy Jesus is that some awful button placement), but this is pretty awesome for those who don’t own the game.

I wonder whether it will run at full speed? Didn’t the PAL Mega Drive run at 50… something hertz, making games slow down?

  19. Blue Bombers Cousin says:

meh already got wily wars anyways, but thanx for the heads up guyz

  20. Steven Chase says:

I’m reeeeally trying to understand what sense is makes to include Sonic 1, 2, & Knuckles… But not 3.

  21. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

Well if you guys and gals want to pony up the dough thats your thing. I mean there are few genesis games I played back in the day ,but not many I ever liked. Yes I grew up with super nintendo ,but there were games genesis had that nintendon’t didn’t. LOL :D

  22. Airman says:

    @BlueBomber’sCousin

You own Wily Wars? On what?

  23. Ace9921 says:

Let me tell you guys something: I have experience with AtGames’ Geniclones, and these things belong in a landfill. Seriously. First off, they’re not even proper clones of the Genesis. There’s no Genesis hardware in this at all. Remember the Radica Street Fighter II Genesis plug & play? That was a real Genesis internally condensed to a single chip known as a GOAC. Well, AtGames’ hardware has no such thing. It does use a system-on-a-chip design, but with a Titan ARM chip at the base on which a Genesis emulator was added in. And it is absolutely TERRIBLE!!

I played MegaMan: The Wily Wars on a Genesis Arcade Motion Dual, a system that’s shaped like Sonic’s head and comes with Wiimote-like. This system can play Genesis games off an SD card, and the experience I had playing MegaMan: The Wily Wars on it was horrific. First off, the audio is MURDERED. It’s absolutely unbearable. Also, I’ve noticed some nasty video resolution issues; you can literally see MegaMan’s eyes vary in size as he moves along the screen (and the video quality isn’t very good – too bright, MASSIVE amounts of dot crawl and extremely blurry). Third, and this is THE biggest problem: the console itself DOES NOT support saving of any kind. This means no Wily Tower unless you never power off the console. It doesn’t matter whether you use an original ROM or one patched to use battery-backed SRAM instead of Serial EEPROM, it will not save. Ever.

I don’t know if the new AtGames consoles have a better emulator that supports saving, but I know one thing from watching some YouTube videos of this thing in action: the accuracy is still as bad as it was when AtGames started making Geniclones in 2008.

Tip: If you see the AtGames and Sega Genesis logos on the same package, run. Don’t waste your money on these. Get yourself a real Genesis (Model 1, please) or one of the CONSIDERABLY better GOAC-based clones available. This piece of software-emulated junk needs to be incinerated.

  24. GadgetJax says:

    @StevenChase

The reason there is no Sonic 3 included is because AtGames is not good at emulating games that require saves. come to think of it, the users manual of the game player portable shows info about Mega Man 1, rather than Wily Wars. So, there is a chance that the handheld may only emulate Mega Man 1 from Wily Wars, rather than the whole collection. Also, if they were going to include Capcom games, why not include Strider?

  25. megafan says:

when it releases where can we buy it

  26. Anonyreploid says:

Let’s just hope this friggin’ thing makes it over to Canada, and in stores, NOT as a bloody mail-order/online-order-only item!

  27. Aaron says:

Well, I don’t know if anyone will read this, but I’ll put it here, since the fourms are still down.

I finally found these things at Dollar General for $40.

The first thing that bothered me was the packaging itself. You can feel something rattling around just by picking it up. Turns out the instructions were what I was hearing. They were too lazy to tape down the instructions, it seems. Otherwise, packaging is ok.

The rest of this is only going to apply to Wily Wars.

Video: looks OK on the small screen, but when you hook it up to the tv… the flaws becomes apparent. There are places where the graphics looks garbled (usually small details) or not quite right. Background and other objects “waves” whenever the screen scrolls.

Audio: Ugh. Sounds AWFUL when coming from the handheld speakers. When coming from the tv; it sounds better, but still off-key.

Controls: The controls themselves are still fine, but the button configuratons are awkward, being in this vertical slope. It would’ve been much better if they kept them in a horizontal line, like the original Genesis controller. I keep finding myself pressing the attack and jump buttons at the same time.

Others: Sadly, this thing CANNOT SAVE. If you turn the power off or press the menu button, your progress will not be saved. It doesn’t matter if you tell the game to save or if you inserted an SD card. The only way you’re going to get to Wily Tower is if you play all three games in one sitting. Really, who has the time to do that nowadays? This is a fatal flaw that f**ks up the entire thing.

Overall: It’s nice to see Wily Wars released again in some form, but this is, sadly, a butchered port. You’re best off buying the actual cartridge (if you can find it!) or downloading a ROM. Otherwise, keep pestering Capcom for a virtual release.
