Roll’s Shipping Adventures Detailed in Mega Man #22
For the cold month of February, a cold themed issue of Archie’s Mega Man would seem appropriate. But how will that work out if Roll is busy trying to hook people up? Or is it Roll herself who has found her match? The synopsis reads:
“(W) Ian Flynn (A) Gary Martin & Various (CA) Matt Herms & Various
‘Cold Crush.’ Is love in the air – or is that just frost? Mega Man, Roll, and Quake Woman go to the far north to assist Ice Man in a perilous research mission. Will Roll’s attempt at match-making be more hazardous than the ice?”
So it didn’t take long for the comic to go THIS direction, eh? Hah, just kidding. Battle & Chase fans know that Ice Man always had a little something for Roll. But as to how it plays out in the comic, we’ll just have to wait and see!
Thanks as always, Merricks!

Um, question Archie comics…when will we be getting the Mega Man 3 story? I thought it was 4 issues for a game, then 4 for a made up story and repeat? We had that Xander Payne stuff which ended with the set-up for Mega Man3….where’s Mega Man 3 people?
3 won’t be for awhile. As we have the current 4 issue arc (2 protoman, roll at the ocean, then the time travel one).
Then these next two (or three), then its the sonic/megaman crossover.
After that it looks like its been setting up Super Adventure Rockman, not Mega Man 3 (though they could do 3 then adventure, either way they’ll be pretty close to each other).
So yeah at the earliest I’d say 3 would be in september next year (if they do it before super adventure, which I don’t think they will).
Eh, I’ve never cared much for implied robocest, to be honest. As far as specifically Ice Man and Roll goes, I always liked the kind of relationship they had in Ariga’s works the best, where they’re close but you can see it’s a familial/platonic bond.
@Airman: Honestly, I prefer that they mix things up, to be honest. We’ll get the Mega Man 3 story, don’t worry. But I like that they’re doing a little bit of expanding to other things in the meantime. And I especially like that some of that expanding involves introducing some other characters that are gonna be important in future stories.
But…they’re technically siblings, right?
I always found that weird.
^Ya. and because of that is why I like how they are in Ariga’s manga, like I said. Cuz they seem close there, but not in a romantic way. In that, Ice Man even says that he looks up to Roll as his big sister. I much prefer the way it’s handled there, then the way it seems it’s being handled here.
lol, roll’s hair just changed into MM8 style, which is kinda odd….
@Kapus, Clown Prince: There *is* the possibility of a full page of Roll loudly turning him down for that exact reason. I would not put it past them at this point.
@Kapus
But they’re robots. The worst they can do is take some of their spare parts and make their “inbreed” kid.
Seriously, Mega and Roll were made from similar designs and been together since day 1, so they see each other as siblings. Ice Man’s design is different and wasn’t around her very much, so they don’t see any sibling ties.
They might just play up on how Ice Man liked Roll because she was only robo-girl around until recently.
Double post.
But I do wonder ( hope ) if Top Man would be a smooth talk, like in the Ruby-Spear cartoon?
@Airman: Actually I like that they’ve been exploring the background for now. And I have a hunch: all these background expansions will play a role in the adaptations. Just a hunch though. It could just be a case of expanding the background, nothing more, nothing less.
@RayZX: I dunno, I’ve always been fonder with the MM8 hair, so I think this is great. XD
Awesome! What about Bass and Roll? I would love if Ian makes that fan pairing official.
I see it like this. While they’re all built by Dr. Light, Light most likely only made it so Blues, Rock, and Roll would be siblings, while the others were built to be separate individuals and not have the thought process of sibling/family ways. That would explain why Ice Man has a crush on Roll as he doesn’t or wasn’t programmed to see her as a sibling.
Indeed, Light doesn’t seem to view Elecman and the Sunshine Seven as his “children”. At least, not nearly to the extent he does with Rock & Roll. (And Blues, though that relationship still has to be tested.)
Having the same creator does not make it incest. That’s just getting ridiculous.
I just hope they don’t make any relationships too intense, like they did in the Sonic Comic series. (yuck!) Megaman classic is too childlike for anything serious.
Though a few hints at Ice/Roll would be adorable.
I never really thought of Roll and the Robot Masters as siblings. Their interactions suggest more that they’re friends, so it’s easier for me to accept a romance than most fans. Besides, biological relationships hardly apply to robots.
@Glitcher
And that’s why I always get the feeling Roll has some “deeper” feelings for “her precious Mega” than it should be with siblings.
Cooool!!!
Es mejor que se demoren en pasar a los juegos… de lo contrario en pocos años no tendran historias en la que basarse y tendran que hacer mas filler…
I wonder who here doesn’t know what Shipping is. LOL! This should be a fun issue.
Yeah, “mixing it up” and “expanding to other things” is….great, but I don’t want to see it deviate TOO far from the original story. I personally loved the way Ariga did the stories. I’m not saying these should be anything like Ariga’s but I would like something to feel a little more solid. These additional “arcs” they’re adding are feeling very unfocused and really all over the place. Proto Man’s origins was cool and a great idea and it made sense that would either follow or precede the Mega Man 3 storyline. But now we’re getting ANOTHER out of left field new made up story? And breaking the pattern they claimed to be following already? It probably will be interesting but I hope we get to see some classic Mega Man action again soon.
Well, considering the big crossover with Sonic is only about two or three issues after the one shown here, they probably want to save it for after said crossover so that they won’t feel like limited in how they do it. Considering they brought back the Mega Man 2 bosses and might even do either an adaptation of Super Adventure Rockman, or combine it with Mega Man 3, it’s pretty clear that the old four issue format isn’t gonna cut it this time (and in my opinion, it didn’t cut it with the previous two adaptations, due to how rushed they felt).
Of all things, Cold Crush sounds like a nice weapon to get.
^ What this guy said.
I agree that they were too rushed before but breaking your own rules so early on makes them again, feel unfocused and like they don’t really know where they want the story going. I still like them (even if the art leaves something to be desired sometimes) but I still would like some return to some form of story stability.
Why is it called “shipping”?
Reminds me of the Team Nekokan song No. 5′s Unrequited Love.

This looks cute…but this better be the last time we have these weird filler side-stories, unless they do it on occasion. Because this is getting a little ridiculous!
