Don’t Expect a New Game for Mega Man’s 25th
The folks at Capcom have made a lot of murmurings about plans in the works to celebrate Mega Man‘s 25th anniversary. However, that doesn’t mean you should go expecting some amazing new game (though a number of fans have regardless).
When questioned about what’s going on, Capcom’s Christian “Sven” Svensson made this response:
[...] In December “some but not all” plans for the coming year of celebrations will be shared. There are many moving parts and not everything will be done and final come December. No one has promised a game or even an announcement of one at that time. Please do keep expectations in check.
And that’s all there is to the story, really. I know a lot of people are anxious, but getting wound up and constantly asking questions isn’t going to make December arrive any faster. And the truth is that it’s unprecedented for a Mega Man title to be created specifically to honor an anniversary, or as compensation. Mega Man may be having it rough these days in the games department, but that doesn’t mean Capcom owes us a game in turn, even if some of us would like it to.
Chances are you may not like what Capcom has in store, and I think that’s the source of a lot of this anxiety. But if you keep your expectations in check and try not to be so pessimistic, you might find what they have cooking is actually pretty cool. Best advice I can give, anyhow.
Thanks to Joshua for the tip!

*sigh* we just want our little blue boy back…is that so much too ask?
@Blue Bombers Cousin
Megaman 9 was a big hit for Capcom, but Megaman 10 was a financial disaster for them. The old formula make sequel after sequel dosen’t worked out well. Times changed. Megaman 10 was good, but Megaman 9 was great in every aspect.
I think Capcom is afraid, afraid to take a step further. The point why Megaman 9 worked so well was not the 8 Bit Retro Style, it was the perfect combination of all elements that made Megaman great. When Capcom transfer this elements into a new game with some new ideas and innovations then it will be a hit.
But so Capcom transfers the Blue Bomber over to the App Marked where they can make quick money with games that are nothing more then a joke in quality and design. But it works for capcom. Maybe you see out little blue boy back in Megaman Ios.
“Nostalgia grabs” aside, I’ve enjoyed MM9 and 10 a GREAT deal.
In fact, and some people might hate me for this, but I liked them more than MM2 and 3, my previous favorite of the franchise.
So if Capcom would AT LEAST give us a Megaman 11 (playable: Megaman, Protoman, Bass, and Roll DLC) I would be really really grateful.
But no game whatsoever? What did we EVER do to YOU, Capcom?
I’m expecting a game… Even if it’s a cheap downloadable one (for consoles). Which for the time they have is the most realistic thing they could pull off.
@Shihe
I found Megaman 9 was the perfect Megaman game, no matter what other people say. I mean, everything was absolutly perfect.
The moment where you enter the wily stages and then the music hits with the thunder in the background, wow what for a feeling. That was a feeling that something bad will happen and that this leads to the ultimate battle with Wily. It was something i never feel since Megaman 2.
But the stage design, the weapons, the weapon use to make stages easier, the great music, the balancing, everything was absolutly outstanding. Megaman 9 is my alltime favorite in the series.
And another thing.
If Capcom is NOT going to give us a new game… then perhaps they could at least release Megaman 8 for consoles online services.
PSN users could get the PS1 version, and XBLA users could get the SEGA Saturn version.
I mean… at least SOMETHING, even if it’s a re-release of ANOTHER anniversary title.
(I swear I’m confused as to why this game is still not available)
@Shihe
Megaman 8 is aviable for Playstation 1, Sega Saturn, Gamecube (Anniversary Collection). Just use Ebay, there you will get the game.
@Adaaification
I was referring to a re-release, in the PS-One classics. But I guess it’s an alternative.
I’ve killed off any emotions I had for Mega Man’s future a long time ago. I never really expected anything out of Capcom.. especially since they announced Rockman X Over for iOS. I’m probably one of the biggest Mega Man fans out there.. but with Keiji Inafune gone, it’s obvious they’ll do a little something here, a little something there.. but if you’re expecting something like Mega Man 11, Mega Man X9, Legends 3, or anything of the sort.. especially on a physical disc and sold in a store… I wouldn’t be holding my breath.
These days, I’m more excited about the new comics and action figures coming out than I am over any possibility of a new game coming out.
More of a reason for me to dislike them more and more.
But I can care less because I want to get my hands on the Mega Man Comics. Why? They are the things I love more than anything else. I can enjoy the games anytime I want but as far as CAPCOM goes, I can care less about them especially that figurehead Sven.
If he does show up at NYCC, I hope to give him a piece of my mind.
For me megaman is dead. Now there is only the excellent comics by Archie. Ian Flynn has made more for megaman than Capcom.
In all honesty, there’s only two situations possible to hope that Megaman can possibly have a future.
The Anniversary either has to:
A: Be so good that all becomes forgiven and Capcom gets all our faith back.
OR
B: It has to be so bad, that no matter what kind of fan you are, the hate and disappointment will be so grand, so impossibly enormous, that the crapstorm that erupts from it will make the initial week of Legends 3 cancellation look like nothing. It’d have to be so large, that it’d reach every single gaming blog, vlog, podcast ever, all knowing what happened.
Every stream, bombarded with hate. Every major spot in Unity, attacked and flamed. Every one of their official Facebook pages, flooded with anger. All their upcoming convention appearances, ruined from protest.
And if it had to come to it, even a large strike and protest in front of their buildings, around the world.
Sounds like two major extremes, but the sad truth is, those two are the only outcomes that can occur if we are to hope for an actual TRUE change to happen.
Anyone else prepared to abandon Capcom? It’s not to late kiddies.
The memory remain, good song by Metallica. Or Leave the Memories alone by Fuel. Both songs would perfect fit for a funeral for the blue bomber. It’s a shame but everything must come to an end.
I mean, what are the greatest Video Games Series? Castlevania (A shadow of it former self and actually rebootet), Metroid (Still runing and ass kicking), Zelda (Still running, but not so good like it was), Mario (The quality is an up and down), Sonic (Nothing special anymore, the franchise is nearly dead) and Megaman (Taking his last breath, will be buried in december). I’m sure i miss a lot of great series, but that are the series from my childhood. And they all get down in one way or another. But the great memories i got when i played trough them will ever be in my heart.
With Xover on the horizon and a possible reboot of the blue bomber franchise based on Ios the series is nearly dead. Capcom just milks the rest out of the dead cow.
95% of the comments are what I expect them to be: pessimistic garbage.
At this point. All I see is people mudslinging Capcom because they aren’t getting to hear what they want to hear from Svensson and Capcom. Considering the fan backlash, I’m not surprised they aren’t announcing anything. They think telling us nothing will allow them to surprise us, and in a way, they are correct in that regard.
There are people out there who are so keen on holding grudges against Capcom that they will now take almost any and every word from Capcom’s reps as signs of the Blue Bomber’s apocalypse or some kind of blow against him…and it’s -quite frankly- utterly disgusting. Same goes to the pessimists. Who are continuously raining down crescendos of gloomy crud. There are also the people who try to shove “Face it, the franchise is dead” down people’s throats. To them I say “Screw off you sacks of ugly, pessimistic mulch”.
Capcom may not be doing much to restored faith, but damn. Talk about no faith in the future. At this point I’m starting to think the fans will be the death of the franchise instead of the company at this rate.
which is the reason why Capcom will forever be the worse video game company in the world, and I’m sure all of you agree with me.
@Murkman
It might seem that everybody is lambasting Capcom for no real reason, but in reality Capcom is a legitimately bad company and they’re showing no signs of making up for their douchebaggery
Why do you think so many developers have left them?
Am I biased against Capcom? Oh, definitely. But at the same time, they kind of deserve all the hate that they get.
@PrincessZelda
Well…. I will give Capcom this though: They’re not as bad as EA or Activision…. though they’re incredibly close…
@Murkman: “Pessimistic garbage”?!
Three cancelled games in a row doesn’t concern you in the least? Or that Capcom has done absolutely nothing to regain our trust? Or that all we’re getting for the 25th is an iPhone game that has a very good chance of turning out to be shovelware?
It should, goddammit. None of this is normal for a VG series.
And blaming the fans…really?
I want to believe that this isn’t the end, and I’m going to keep on hoping. That doesn’t mean I won’t or shouldn’t express my anger at Capcom–or at people who tell others that if they don’t feel a certain way, they’re horrible people.
@Murkamn: Hm, don´t blame Capcom? Capcom said that the Megaman franchise is not longer worth the money because it´s no longer lucrative, they cancelled three games in a row, they blame the fans how supported Legends 3 in every way that they are the one how to blame for the canncelation, they showed the fans the middle finger with the fat Megaman in Street Fighter x Tekken and they have no plans for the blue bomber except a terrible Ios Game named Xover and Capcom **** on the fans because they don’t listen to them. Have i forgot something?
No, i think i got the point here and it´s my right to blame Capcom for the **** they have done. I´m not pessimistic garbage. I just see the things as they are. And at the moment Capcom ruins everything and they have no idea how to make things right. That´s a fact.
It’s a good thing Heat used the word “pessimistic” or else a comedic number of you would have needed a thesaurus.
Here’s what I’m curious about from you optimists out there:
If we aren’t getting a game, no announcement or slightest suggestion a game is even in the works, Sven has already stated they want to move away from resorting to re-releases, older Legends games can’t be re-released due to licensing issues, and a music collection has already been announced….
What could possibly happen in December that would be worth giving a crap about? A video on Capcom’s Twitch.tv stream? More re-releases of games we’ve already bought each about three times over by now? A big ol’ floppy hat?
Tell me why pessimists are wrong to not be looking forward to Capcom’s plans for MM’s 25th?
Because if you can’t form an idea of something realistic outside of “They’ll do something, be patient”, you aren’t being optimistic; you’re in denial. There’s a difference.
Just because a video game series isn’t as much of a profitable success as another does not mean it isn’t as good. Sometimes that which is overlooked can be even better than what isn’t. If only it were possible to be more concerned about game quality and fan satisfaction than sales, the game industry would be a better place.
One can dream.
I’ve already given up on CAPCOM. I could care less what happened. Maybe at the 25th Anniversary, they can just say “Mega Man is dead and we have no plans to bring him back.” That’ll put all this BS to rest.
Or they could announce and anime, or cool computer animated movie. Or they could announce one big ass collection of games with achievments and unlockables. Or a card game, or a social media game on the unity site. Or a fighting game, or or or. There are a lot of cool things they could start in December.
I have to agree wit h Murkman. The pessimism is getting older and deader than Mega Man at this point.
well…crap =(
like I said about Xover before I’d get it but I dont have and ios hardware to play it on. So other than that game nothing else?
I’ve got nothing at this point. At this point I can keep my expectations in check because I have ZERO expectations.
I wish Inafune would make some sort of spiritual successor to megaman. Comcepts own version of megaman.
@Redraizer Zero
I’m not being pessimistic, I’m being REAListic. I’m not going to get my hopes up for some hypothetical game that Crapcom is not going to bother making.
I love and always will love Mega Man. But I’m not going to hope something’s going to happen when it’s clearly not.
@Everyone: I will fault Capcom for their bad decisions too, you may not think so, but I was just as livid as the rest of you when I heard MML3 was cancelled, but unlike the lot of you people here who are throwing your pessimism around like it’s a field day, it’s gotten -as Treleus put it- older and deader than Mega Man at this point.
Also, enough of this cock-and-bull “don’t blame Capcom, blame the fans” kind of rhetoric. It’s stupid. I blame Capcom for their shortcomings, but I am also going to blame the fans for continuing to hold a grudge well over a year after the cancellation of MML3 and Universe. It’s gotten old, tiresome, and sickening to read. We get it. You’re angry. You’ve made that clear enough to everybody here a thousand times over. We’ve had enough of hearing it already. Those kinda of comments are just becoming obnoxious.
I currently don’t have my hopes up for Mega Man’s 25th. Maybe they are gonna try for getting Project X Zone released in the States and elsewhere, and maybe that’s what they will announce? Who knows? I don’t, and neither does anyone else. I love how people are predicting something they can’t rightly predict seeing as Capcom’s keeping quiet about it (and rightfully so considering the cadres upon cadres of people who are shouting at them these days). I’m not going to tell you to be patient. Whether they do something or not is up to time, and the clock is ticking.
tl;dr: I’m not as bad as you think, enough of the BS, only time will tell whether they do something worthwhile or anything at all. Right now my money’s not on anything.
@Murkman
Your a dam fool for trying to calling the hatred that stems from the community “old and tired”. Especially the fool for trying so on a megaman community fan site. If u dont want to hear the sad truth abt capcom over and over again, dont come here, expecting a different reaction. Especially if the post is abt more of Capcom delaying any sort of news for Megaman. We only mention these old complaints when Capcom gives some sort of statement that involves no real megaman news. If anything, blame that Sven guy for constantly bringing up the fact that there are no plans, because this is the reaction we will always give.
And RIGHTFULLY so.
My opinion is that this is the final nail in the coffin for the Mega Man franchise as a whole. The Wii-U is coming out, and tons of amazing games are already ready to be released. They could have put a new Mega Man game of SOME kind on that list and made a lot of money from it. They chose not to. Slowly but surely, they have killed the entire franchise altogether, not just Mega Man Legends.
Capcom, you will be hated forever by millions of people. Smooth freakin’ move. Have fun not making money off us.
Well Capcom buried Street Fighters for some years before ressurecting it.
You could says , they buried breath of fire and didn’t ressurect it.
But breath of fire was far less popular.
When a bunch of old executive die of old age, the new might want to try to do a megaman game again. (Just hope they die soonner than later)
I think this was a very well-stated take on Capcom’s response. It’s never easy to make a general statement regarding a specific item in question, especially when you aren’t given clearance to reveal complete plans.
With some confidence, I am positive that we won’t see a new console title this December. As mentioned in earlier threads, they are still trying to allow for a set time period before the new title is released. The benefit this provides far out-weighs the negative effects. Honestly, Capcom can’t shoulder all of the blame for this either. The platform is truly important for any gaming series. Each console is tailored to a specific consumer audience. And only a percentage of each console consumer will have interest in this particular title. So how to maximize the potential to justify its release becomes the looming problem. Evidence would suggest that the target platform for the next release will be on the 3DS or DS systems. This is the safest move. Beyond that, I wouldn’t expect to see the new release until the end of next summer. Given consumer feedback (in sales) the sequel (already in development) would be released the following year on the Wii U. These statements will hold true if other elements remain strong- such as the sales of the upcoming Wii U. I think that this December will be more of a whisper of things to come.
But none of this is really even the biggest secret regarding what’s possibly coming down the pipes for MM fans if this comes to pass…
@Murkman: If you still don’t understand why the fans are still angry at Capcom, then at this point, you’re actively avoiding anything that could let you understand, since then you wouldn’t have anyone to yell at. And having one less abrasive, holier-than-thou fan tell us that we’re horrible people would just be SO TERRIBLE, wouldn’t it?
I don’t care how “tired” you think it is. Either figure it out, or quit reading the comments here.
@Airman
I don’t see how either extremes, conflict with realism. In this case people can be optimistic (or pessimistic) and also acknowledge a realistic outcome. Here’s an example. Worst case scenario is Capcom buried the franchise and truly views it as something that’s not viable anymore. During the last couple of years there have been a string of problems and disappointments attached to the actions Capcom has made regarding the franchise, for this my expectations for the company to continue with the franchise is bleak, but only time will tell. At best I see them doing at least something for the 25thann, I hope it’s neat and I can enjoy it.<This doesn't conflict with your statement, but notice how I set realistic standards based on my experiences without raining despair, or provoking a string of negative reactions to a degree. One of the reasons is because I rationalized everything without bias.The other is I was respectful throughout, never insulting or indicating what I stated was law or absolute fact, allowing others to come to their own conclusions without me trampling on them. I understand that emotions run high and people have the right to express them at times, but there's that and there's actively seeking to evoke an emotion at every turn. I am of the type that still believes in the phrase two wrongs don't make a right, the fact that people disagree with Capcom's practices doesn't mean they have to drag their selves down a level.That being said, I'm not telling anyone how to act, this post was made to illustrate the differences between the two extremes and realistic expectations, I can only give suggestions and hope to influence by example.
@RedrazorZero
Tho I do share in the frustration sometimes, it really help me (personally) to understand the logic behind events. If we all stopped to take the time to whittle away at the unknown with what we do know- we would be shocked at the larger amount that is known.
Well stated. We live in real and causal world. I wish people would take a little more time to understand how and why things happen instead of focusing on how they feel about the outcome.
@RedrazerZero
Well red than you have it thats the answer I was looking for thats why I feel better a lot better these days. It has been a very harsh last couple of years I’ll admit that and I am dissappointed and flustered ,but at the same time I guess sometimes it takes a while to accept things for what they are. Though I am not saying just take it either I respect those who express both sides of the coin in this matter its just sometimes it is people will lean to the one side or the other because of whats happening and that is why I feel there is a lot backlash ,but I suppose that is to be expected because all this is related to a lot of cause and effect.
People say I am optimistic about a lot of which I am ,but in all reality I am the most pessimistical person because well I am. I am tired of being negative and just trying to change my attitude about certain parts of my life was not an easy task that took time and like this it took quite a bit of time to accept and take it for what its worth to get this far.
As for emotions I am happy to have those because that is what makes a person a human ,but at the same time what you see here is mere emotion when its expressed and well that is it. I just wish things were handled or that people stop and read carefully what others say because I don’t think some of the comments that have this sense of some sort of analysis aren’t meant to be negative in nature ,but is someone doesn’t like it they will express it as such.
So how about that 25th Anniversary logo?
Virtual Console needs Mega Man 6 and 7, PSN needs Mega Man 8, and 3DS needs Mega Man II, III, IV, and V! We already have Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge. And besides, I have yet to buy the NES Games on VC.
Kind of hard /not/ to be pessimistic. I’d love a good surprise, but I’m not keeping my hopes up.
As stated elsewhere, I would be somewhat (SOMEWHAT) content if CAPCOM just told us what the freakin’ “as-of-yet-undiscovered-secret” in MM9 and MM10 are.
Yes, I’m serious.
@Captain: I’d like to know what that secret is, too.
Some people pointed out (quite vehemently) that it had people talking about MM9 and 10 longer than if there was no “secret”, but you can only stretch something like this out for so long. At this point I think the “secret” is that we spent several years on a wild goose chase.
@Murkman
Hey whoa, I’m a sack of *cute* pessimistic mulch, thank you very much.
In all seriousness, I can’t fault some of the fans for their negativity. Blind optimism in the face of so much bad isn’t commendable either. It’s the misguided way some express their anger and direct it at people who don’t deserve their ire (Sven and other US staff) – this here is the problem.
We’ll be able to celebrate MegaMan once capcom drops dead.
Blargh pffrt! Well yeah who does expect that a GAMEcharacter gets a GAME on his 25th(!!) birthday? I mean thats just stupid and not fitting. Because like there arent any other popular gamecharacters getting games around their anniversary’s like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario.
I feel so silly now. : ‘) *sits down in the silly people corner*.
If they’re not going to make a game then what are they going to make thats fitting of a 25th (two and a half decades) birthday? I mean we’ve been getting a lot of merchandise which is neat but getting old after waiting for so long for a new game. We’ve also have had quite some manga/comics so thats started to become normal to. So I’d say it better be something like 25th anniversary movie or an anime to appease the fans. Its fitting and Capcom can keep sitting on their lazy butts because they dont have to make a game and let the animation studio do all the work.
But blargh hey that just silly to. I mean why expect anything big at all for a 25th anniversary for someone who made a lot of people happy over the years.
Im an idiot for having expectations.
“Mega Man may be having it rough these days in the games department, but that doesn’t mean Capcom owes us a game in turn, even if some of us would like it to.”
Actually, that’s EXACTLY what that means if Capcom would like to maximize its profits from one of its main fanbases.
