Maverick Classics Collection: Three Fan-Made RPGs for the Price of None
Though we still don’t know very much about it at all, the popular rhetoric when Rockman Xover was announced was that the “fans could do a better job” than what we saw. Well, here is one opportunity to put that theory to the test.
“Mavericks Classics Collection” is a three-in-one package of turn-based role playing games created by Kanaal van maddrex77 over the past ten years. Each stars Mega Man X and Zero, and uses plenty of assets from past games along with some new ones. The most interesting of the three appears to be the third installment, which not only has X, but Zero in his Mega Man Zero form, with both fighting alongside Harpuia and Fefnir from that same series.
If you’re interested in trying these out, you can download them here.
Thanks for the tip, Melvin!

But wow, when Fan made games are made better than a companies…wow.
@mirahsan2: I feel the exact opposite. I watch this trailer, which feels a lot like something I’d find on Newgrounds and think to myself “People put a lot of effort into these three games, and yet its ‘Capcom’ who gets crap for quality control issues?” I’m sorry, but I think Xover looks a bit more appealing to me after seeing this trailer.
It’s a fan game so you shouldn’t judge it on the same level as the stuff ****com recently produces.
If one like it, he can give it a try without being worried about money to loose.
Sprite mixing YAAY. Maybe could be good otherwise but I’m just going to be judgemental.
@Rock-X: You forget that this is a fan-made game made by fans during their free time. Capcom’s supposed to be making games as part of their job so naturally our expectations of their Products would be higher. If the fan-made games have the exact same quality or better than Capcom’s Megaman games, then we know for a fact that Rockman XOver might as well be Rockman Its All Over.
In fact, this isn’t even the best example of fan made games. Try and Youtube Megaman X Corrupted or Megaman Battle Network Chrono X. So far Chrono X is the only one that has a playable demo and it already looks amazing so far.
Honestly this seems to be a very interesting take. And in my opinion does look more appealing overall than XOver. Sure there are a few issues with things like animation and whatnot but given their limits, these look very promising.
Fan game or not, take a little time and put in more walking frames.
Yeesh.
Saw a video of these games a couple of weeks ago. To be honest they made me feel a little embarrassed.
At the very least, they get an A for effort, because honestly, arranging sprites actually is VERY time consuming, even when missing frames and stuff. I’m fine with mixing sprite styles for the most part, it usually doesn’t look too bad.
Maybe I’ll give these a try some day. After using RPG Maker for so long, I have an idea how long these things take (which is a loooong time, and I’ve never even finished one!) So…props to Kanaal van maddrex77 for actually completing 3 games!
walking frames aaaaahhh
Looks okay for RPG maker. I might give it a shot some time.
my only complaint is the walking animation sprit why did they copy it exackly from the Xtreme one?
Ok so maybe the fans with a bit more effort, can produce a better game. Not saying the guy who made this didn’t have any effort into the game, but… It seems like a Flash game on Newgrounds, not any of the good ones either.
And dat walking Animation.
So Ace Attorney 5 is coming out. I guess Capcom WILL be getting some of my money!
Someone should mention this to Protodude! it should also be in his blog as well! Loved the Mavericks fangame series and played it to death. So this should be in Protodude’s blog as well!
this game looks lame and uninteresting. especially since none of the enemies or backgrounds are original. i would rather just play that iphone game coming out.
Now that other fan game… i think its called Megaman X Corruption. i’m patiently waiting for that. the one thats open world like MMZ
@The Volkswagen Reploid
Get out… now…
Doesn’t look that bad or that good. Can’t say it’s any better or worse than Xover because I haven’t played either yet. Might give it a chance though. I’m not really a fan of RPGs as a whole but i ended up liking Command Mission so who knows! =]
@Alantor
i’m sorry that i like new things, that i can appreciate what CAPCOM has to over. i would rather try something new then play recycled crap that doesnt even use original sprites and mix matches the different bit depths. The Funny thing is, if this was made by CAPCOM, you would all be bitching about it for that reason. im sorry im a sensible person. idc who makes what, if it doesnt look good it doesnt look good.
Kids these days and their HD remakes and crap. your the reason we dont see new stuff because developers are afraid to try new things
i remember the time when fans didnt get their genitals in a knot when games went in new directions with stuff. im just getting sick of gamers this generation.
A ladder inside an elevator… that seems awfully redundant…
It’s nice to see that the fanbase makes some interesting MM games whereas Capcom doesn’t.
Volkswagen: In fairness, one of the chief complaints I seem to recall from Xover was that it reused enemies/assets from the likes of Mega Man 7 and the MMX iPhone game.
@The Volkswagen Reploid
Megaman X Corruption also re-uses background and enemies so I fail to see your point…
I think Alantor is the game’s creator. :>
@aquila
from what i last saw of MMXC, the graphics looked clean, and everything matched well. i think it stuck to snes graphics. in that trailer i saw the multicolored boxes from MMX6 with an 8bit megaman in a Megaman 8 background. thats sloppy looking. if it was a beta id understand but a final product should be the best to an ability and it looks like graphics was the last thing anyone cared about making this.
@LBD “Nytetrayn”
i have yet to see the final product of that game so i cant really comment fairly
If we’re going to discuss Xover again allow me to get out of the way why I dislike that game so much.
I currently have three reasons:
Reason the first: The aesthetic.
Granted we only have three screenshots to work with but what I’ve seen so far looks incredibly boring. The terrain is unappealing; a grey flatland with no enviromental obstacles what-so-ever, the same bland backgroung tiles re-used over and over again (even the NES Megaman games had better backgrounds) and the sprites look like they where ripped right out of a fan made flash game (with no offence to flash artist or the fanbase).
If the rest of the game does indeed look better than this then Capcom just made a stupid choice to pick these particular screens to show us.
Reason the second: The gameplay.
Again we havent seen any gameplay footage so we only have those screenshots to work with, though they kind of give away what one might expect. I already mentioned how bland the terrain is. It doesn’t seem like any platforming is involved, that you’re just running form left to right fighting a gauntlet of enemies and the occasional boss. We also get virtual buttons, cause god forbid that Capcom actually puts some effort into trying to make an interesting control scheme. But worst of all about the gamepaly is that it bears a striking resemblance to the previous Megaman game released for mobile devices, and we all know how that one turned out.
Reason the third: Why is this on a mobile device?
First I want to get this out of the way, I have nothing against mobile gaming. I’ve seen plenty of great arcade style games on mobile devices (Angry Birds immediately jumps to mind). However, the problem with mobile gaming is that you can only do so much with it.
May I remind you that this is supposed to be an anniversary title yet Capcom is treating it like some side project. You’d think if Capcom plans to celebrate a franchice that has survived for a 1/4 of a century they would put more effort into it. Look at Street Fighter, Monster Hunter and Resident Evil. Why do those franchises get so much better treatment. Why is Megaman neglected like this.
To put further into perspective as to how offensive I find Xover to be… Imagine Square Enix… Imagine that they’re going to release Kingdom Hearts 3… as a iphone only game… let that thought sink in for a moment… that’s how I feel about this game.
On a posetive note; I like the concept behind this game, I really do. They’re combining every single Megaman series together into one game. It’s like Sonic Generations only with Megaman.
I just wish it got better treatment.
@The Volkswagen Reploid
You must also keep in mind that this is a free-to-play fanmade game so you shouldn’t really expect much from the aestetics or presentation.
RPG Maker…
@Cluckingchicken
Do I look like I created this game? No, maddrex77 is the true creator of this fantastic fangame series. Does this post say I created it? No. But maddrex77 did a good damn job on it. Just my opinion. But I really wish he added in the Charged Shot.
looks interesting … but it will take forever to download … specially with rapidshare =\
okay, here’s the problem with comparing a fan game to a capcom produced game.
fan game, usually 1-10 people working on a game, with no budget, using resources available to them.
professionally produced games… you’ve sat through the credits to these things, no? Lots and lots of people! a lot of people doing the sprite work, a couple people programming various aspects of the game! In FF games, I believe you have someone who works on the overworld, and someone who works on towns, and someone who works on dungeons, if not more than one.
This game is both fantastic and terrible at the same time.
it’s fantastic as a Final fantasy game with Mega man X skins. If you look at it, all the animations, the lack of animation on the enemies, the style of the first game. it’s a final fantasy clone. It’s rather good at imitating the oldskool final fantasy games too.
That’s also why it’s terrible. reusing sprites and game art, okay. spriting isn’t for everyone. I sprite custom 8 bit sprites. time consuming and not exactly child’s play. spriting things at 16 bit or 32 bit? one person? do you want games to come out or not? That’s forgivable in fan games where they don’t have a team of dedicated artists.
game concept though? if you’re going to make a mega man X RPG, make a Mega Man X RPG! not a Final fantasy clone set in the MMX universe. That’s where you have resources! your own creativity!
it’s no better than EA! This is an EA level fangame.
For mavericks 1 they use ALTTP graphics.
@Alantor, yeah, you’re so very convincing…
I might be able to get over the sprite mixing (which is a minor pet peeve) if the overworld sprites weren’t so laughably bad. Are those the Xtreme sprites or custom sprites? Either way I can’t stand to look at them. Maybe if there was another frame or two of animation, but honestly I’d say larger more detailed sprites would be better. Especially since most of those levels were made to fit… larger, more detailed sprites.
The RPG itself doesn’t seem to bad though. A good start and I definitely think the creator should use what he’s learned to improve and try to make even better games. Perhaps even ones that don’t borrow sprites from 20 different games.
@Cluckingchicken
… *Sigh* Look, if I have the skills to make this game series, I will get either praise or negative comments about it. I don’t have the skills to make Mavericks. Hell, i tried RPG Maker 2003, but quit due to its compicated RPG making and codes to make an RPG.
So once again, I didn’t make this, maddrex77 did. So please, believe me this time…
@ProtoZero but hes also remaking that game to look more like his other games
is there any way that anyone could upload this somewhere that isn’t rapidfire? I get a horrible download speed from them :/ I’ve been downloading for an hour and a half and i’m still only at 1/4 of the way there.
So no one’s pointed out that it doesn’t work on 64-bit Windows?
So no one’s pointed out that it doesn’t work on 64-bit Windows? Otherwise, I’ve seen RPG attempts like the one feature, and the one we have here is much more impressive looking. Props for that; I’ve tried sprite gaming too, and it really is hard.
….no comment on my overly long rant about Xover?
Wow, that’s a first…
Back on topic though; I might find some interest in trying these games out when I have some free time.
