The Nightmare Zero You Haven’t Seen
Following Mega Man X2‘s 1-Up trick, here’s another X series secret you’ve likely not seen. This time, however, it’s due to a glitch. In the not so revered title Mega Man X6, it’s supposed to be possible to face an ultra-powerful Lv. 4 Nightmare Zero. Not only that, but beating him unlocks Black Zero, which otherwise is only available by using a code when starting a new game.
This doesn’t turn out to work, though. Why? To reach Lv. 4 Nightmare Zero, you need to collect 5,000 Nightmare Souls. But the game is also set so that upon gathering 3,000 Nightmare Souls, the Gate stages open up and encounters with Nightmare Zero and High Max no longer occur in the regular stages. In other words, Nightmare Zero goes away before you can get the requisite 5,000 Nightmare Souls. The only way to access this battle with Nightmare Zero now is via hacking.
I’m supposing the unlock code is in the game at all either because a programmer realized this flaw, or because someone decided not to include the Lv. 4 encounter in the game. Or perhaps it really has been a huge oversight all along. Considering X6 as rushed out exactly a year after X5, it’s certainly possible…
Thanks for the tip, Flame!

wow… props on the guy that handles X and Zero with finesse
I remember this fight! I got my ass kicked by Zero because it was new to me, but I quickly learned some of his moves and knew when to dodge and such and won! But I fought nightmare Zero Lv.4 without the apperently code or hack. Just normal playing. I don’t remember how many souls I had but I know for sure he was Lv.4 because I was like “Huh?! Level 4?!!!” as my older brother quickly turned around to see. Maybe it was luck, random, or a glitch but I certainly didn’t use a code or hack.
X6 has so many sections that obviously didn’t get as much testing as they should have so it wouldn’t surprise me if they just didn’t have the time to fix it.
Ha, good times…
I wonder if there was supposed to be anything like this for getting the Ultimate Armor for X.
X6 is such a buggy, horrible game, and yet I can’t help but sotra enjoy it.
I enjoy X6, it has some sort of strange charm to it, I like it more than X7 at any rate. That being said, there’s never been an X game I did’t enjoy; but X1, X4 and MHX are my favorites.
Perhaps I’m reading into it too much, but maybe the programmers’ decision to leave Lv.4 Zero in, and to be unlocked by gameshark, was a big eff you to ol’ Capiecom?
The current state of affairs leads me to believe this.
X6, the real nightmare.
Wow, who knew that Lv. 4 Nightmare Zero was a fight you could not get to without using devices like Gameshark. That fight honestly looked pretty intense. If more time was spent on X6 and this fight was also in it the game would have been my favorite no doubt, not saying X6 was not enjoyable to me at all though.
I do remember trying to get 5000 souls for Blck Zero, but like you said it doesn’t work.
I still think that Illumina’s head looks like Megatron…
Megatron! Oh Damn!
Honestly I never understood what you guys found so buggy and hard about the game, I have played the game myself a countless times and never encountered a single bug.
X6 had a pretty amazing engine. the mechanics were really fine tuned for that game… just some bad level design, and some really bad decision making when it came to zero’s weapons and their command assignment.
whoever decided that up and attack in the air should be an uncancellable plunging attack was just a sadist. it’s sooo bad in infinity mijinion’s level.
@Axl-Fox, strangely enough some stages have random things going on it may have been put in there on purpose, but it’s still passable. I never found X6 to be difficult myself either nonetheless.
My only true complaint about X6 is the dark lighting effect that comes from the nightmare sometimes. Besides that, it’s a game with an amazing soundtrack, an awesome new saber setup for Zero, multiple endings, and one of the few games I can manage to get any degree of a challenge out of (especially if you play the beta version) though most of the challenge is due to tons and tons of nightmare DNA enemies, but nontheless. Considering Keiji had no part in it, the game will always have a warm place in my book of memories.
Wow. First things first: That guy needs a massive round of applause for a level 4 Nightmare Zero without even getting a bit of damage.
Second: DANGIT, this fight would’ve been awesome! I don’t care that X6 (my fourth fave after X1/MHX, X4 and X8) gave me the hardest time in trying to finish it (luckily I did and even got both the two collectible armors), this would’ve been freakin’ awesome!
Third. One of the reasons why I love X6 is the music. The background music to this video (I forgot what stage the video was found in) is one of my favorites in the X series.
And lastly: I just love X6.
Just more proof of what an abysmal game X6 is, so many bugs, so many awful design choices, inconsistent difficulty, horrendous level design.
X7 might have been a failed experiment, but it undeniably had a hell of a lot more effort put into that this steaming pile of crap. To me X6 is not only the worst Megaman game, its also one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. As an aspiring Game Designer, the amount of laziness this game exhibits is truly appalling.
@Vahn43 yeah the game has its moments of challenge, though most of it is by the haphazardly placed enemies with no care or thought put in there placement, it can range from super easy to literally impossible depending on the person you choose and the parts you have(that are permanently missable btw). I can agree the game has an awesome soundtrack(the only thing it got right).
I don’t know whether it counts as a “bug” or not, but Zero’s input for that one move is wrong. I seem to recall that they were going to at least fix it in MMX Collection, but didn’t…
Also, featuring dead-ends in stages with no way out but to die off (after being fed tons of lives while rescuing Reploids and such) or hit reset and reload was very poor design. At least let us just exit the stage!
@LBD “Nytetrayn”
The check points are frequent and load up fast (nearly instantly), stage lengths are short and life is abundant in normal difficulty modes. I can see why you would say give a way out or it’s just stupid but, I think it’s discouraged to stray from the stage’s main paths searching for secrets in your first run. I think for the most part you are most likely suppose to return in search of things, that way you hit an obstacle that can be better dealt with at that point (new abilities, ability to leave the stage etc…). I really didn’t (and don’t) have a problem with Zero’s inputs for the most part, so I really can’t speak on that…
I’m not sure how I feel about X6 anymore. When it initially came out I remember being super excited. All it took was that image of X using the Z-Saber. Then I got it for Christmas I think… and I remember actually wanting to stop playing at a certain point.
Then a while back I did an X-marathon (shortly after X8 came out I think) and I remember dreading my eventual run-through of X6. Surprisingly, I found it to be quite enjoyable.
Perhaps its all just expectations. At first they were way too high, then they were very low. Maybe if I go and play it now, expecting it to be okay, then I’ll find it to be just that.
Well, I love X6 for some reason, but I never knew about this.
But…umm…what’s so different about this Level 4 Nightmare Zero, besides giving you the Black Zero??
All of those attacks look extremely familiar to me (or should I say xtremely? After all I almost always play on xtreme mode!) I mean, the giant sword shockwaves that go through each other, the buster barrages, the “I-can’t-believe-I-forgot-what-it’s-called-punch-the-ground-and-make-energy-blasts-rise-from-the-ground” attack… It doesn’t look any different to me. And I must’ve beaten Nightmare Zero around 20 times.
Does he do more damage? I can’t tell because the player didn’t get hit (that was some niiice dodging there, but…maybe it was done in slow motion? the invisible lasers from Lumina’s second stalking mode lead me to believe something…)
Wow, I could tell from watching this level 4 Zero means business. He’d be very difficult to fight if you didn’t know his patterns perfectly.
Unfortunately, the gamer playing has everything Zero does down to formula. I don’t approve of videos like this because it’s simply not entertaining to watch, and no one really cares how the gamer playing can own the boss. It’s cool for a tutorial though. I noticed he didn’t hit Zero with his own sword though. If I’m correct, it’s his weakness, but it just pisses him off and he goes berserk.
Still, I loled at 3:03..
X: Oh shi–!! Phew…
What I really want to know. Would using your saber with X fighting Nightmare Zero in this level still be as effective? I mean it’s a cheap way to beat the nightmare. But I was looking to see that.
So many vids I see them using the buster which is good but, heh when it comes down to beating him easy. That saber man, that saber. I guess they may have moved cheat though cause of how easy it would’ve been to achieve.
If you guys think his PERFECT Unarmored Lv4 Nightmare Zero fight is impressive, you should REALLY watch his X6 playthrough. Where he does the same exact thing. Unarmored, no damage, playing X6 like a freaking SCIENCE.
Personally? X6 is one of my favorite X games. For me, it actually holds up far better than X4 or 5 with age. X4 is just too short and easy after you have played it a few times. X5 is just too slow, plodding and forces so much jive on you- (You HAVE to sit through dialogue in almost EVERY stage, You HAVE to do them all in a specific order or risk the bad end, your rank as X relies on the LESS enemies you kill, The Falcon armor is not too useful outside of utility, the Gaea armor has a total LACK of it outside of spike immunity making it a nightmare to navigate through the final stages despite it’s incredible power output, You are forced to EQUALLY distribute power ups)
X6 however, always feels fresh each time I play. it has a decent length even in a one shot playthrough, because the stages are not simply “JUMP’NSHOOT”, some are duck and wait. or, stuff like that. Sometime they require a bit more patience, or thinking. And no matter what, it just feels satisfying when you plow through an army of nightmares and absorb all their souls.
@Zigthehunter:
Personally I still like it better than X7. X7 was just plain BLAND, and to be boring is the worst sin a game can commit. X6 has challenge enough and atmosphere enough to be entertaining, and bad design or not, it definitely has replay value and gives quite a while of gameplay. X7, not so much. X7 is just tedious. Again, being boring is the worst crime a videogame can commit, and X6 definitely keeps you on your toes at all times.
@ViralZero:
Opinions I guess. Personally, I tend to find it really cool, because most normal gamers cant seriously pull an entire playthrough off in that exact same way, but this guy does it, and even explains everything along the way. He literally studied and completely memorized X6.
@Duckaiser:
What’s different isnt the moves he uses, but his attack patterns are different, and sometimes, a bit smarter. If you read the video desc., he describes it, but for instance: When he uses Genmurei Kai, the big saber waves, he always fires 3 at 2 varying speeds. at Lv 4 however, he actually pauses for a moment, and then fires off a 4th one, which can be a real deathtrap if you see him stop after the third and then dash at him, only to get a delayed fourth one to the face.
@Jad:
of course it would. It’s his weakness weapon and it makes him flinch and teleport.
@Flame: Okay, I see. That’s interesting. NOW, I know that I’d like to fight Lv. 4 Nightmare Zero, but the only way to do so is to cheat/hack, and I don’t like doing that. Hmmm…what if…no, I can’t think of any way to do it. No way you can get over 2000 Nightmare Souls in one level.
Yeah, sadly, you’re forced to hax or something to get L4 Nightmare Zero to show up (unless, while L4 is normally triggered by 5000 souls, his is lower? I dunno…).
I know from playing the game a few times the max number of Nightmare Souls you can get from one level is 1000-1200~, from Ground Scaravich’s level…..and unfortunately, half of them come from Dynamo.
This game is a piece of crap from beginning to end and shouldn’t exist, and maybe It’s precisely because I find this game entirely abysmal in every single sense and thus have NO inclination whatsoever to study more about this steaming pile than I already have, but just what in the hell is even different about the level 4 fight outside of the fact that the moron who played it managed to do a pointless buster only fight?
Lol, that guy is so pro, wish I played like him.
X6 is such a buggy, horrible game, and yet I can’t help but sotra enjoy it.
Honk you,X6 is the only MM game who don’t have horrible english dubbing -.-
