Newsarama Interviews Archie’s Ian Flynn on Mega Man/Sonic Crossover
Newsarama has just posted a new interview with writer Ian Flynn on Archie’s upcoming crossover between the worlds of Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog. Not a lot of new info is revealed, as one might expect at this point, but it is still a fun read.
One thing we do learn, however, is that as one would expect, the two heroes’ first meeting starts out a little rocky (no pun intended):
Nrama: How would you describe their reaction to each other once they meet? Is it love or hate at first sight?
Flynn: It doesn’t go well. Sonic is known for smashing robots. Mega Man doesn’t do well around pointy objects. In any good crossover, you inevitably have the Hero vs. Hero fight. It’s just fun.
Flynn also points out that “There will be a number of ‘new’ Mega Man characters insofar as we’ve not properly introduced them in the main book yet. And with the two doctors working together, you’ll be seeing some new twists on some old ideas.” Hmm, “Badnik Masters,” perhaps?

Bass and Shadow should team up to fight Mega and Sonic. This looks promising, I can’t wait!
Does Megaman even stand a chance? He’s got so many things stacked against him. One: Sonic’s spikes. Two: Sonic’s ability to destroy robots upon contact with said spikes. Three: Sonic’s super speed.
@Slider
You can expect MegaMan to stand a chance against Sonic.
He has fighting robots waaaay~ faster than Sonic before, after all.
If you can’t believe me, take a look at Quickman and Ra Moon (although he isn’t involved in the comic yet).
Two words Megaman Syndrome. Whenever you see a spike even a quil you must jump over or you will die.
Why does everyone think that Sonic’s quills would hurt Mega Man so badly? There’s hedgehog robots in Needle Man’s stage, and they’re not instant kills. For that matter… Needle Man’s weapon isn’t an instant kill for Mega Man, either.
Ya, I know that most stage spikes are an instant kill, but there’s plenty of spikes in the game that aren’t instant kills, as well.
@Clown Prince of Crime
Funny you mention it.
After posting my last comment to that article I tend to play a bit MegaMan 3 and thought the same when playing Needleman’s Stage.
I’m just delighted that Megaman has a cross over, he needs the spotlight he can get after Capcom’s sub zero shoulder
SPIKES. The only thing that can kill Rock before he can even react. We’ve all been there.
Mega Man doesn’t stand a chance. XD Hahaha. ‘Course I’m kidding; he probably does have a chance. After all, he HAS been fighting enemies since 1987. XD
If anything, Sonic is the one who’s out of his league here (without the Chaos Emeralds). Rock has so many tools to shut down anything Sonic could do; Flash Stopper and Gravity Hold, just to name a few.
Speaking of Emeralds, Super Sonic Megaman–called it first (or maybe I’m just being delusional).
mmm actually Megaman stands a very big chance against sonic….once Megaman but a spike shield…sonic won’t be ablle to jumb on him since that’s all he could do against Eggman’s 0 AI robots ….in fact….Does Sonic stand a chance against Wily’s Robot Masters???? Eggman was soooo easy to beat in every Sonic Game unlike Wily’s Robot Master that had an AI which is waaaay harder than any Eggman Robot…..what sonic can ever do to robot masters that cannot be defeated by Jumps huh???? spin dash on them???? I don’t think so
Oh…one more thing…If megaman defeated Metal Sonic…he can easily take his speed power and become as fast as Sonic….or maybe faster
Rock stands a very big chance against Sonic, and all he needs is his buster. His Rock Buster shoots pellets of *plasma*, so one shot could actually kill Sonic if it hit. IF it hit, because of Sonic’s speed, but by now Rock would know how to fight someone speedy thanks to going up against Quickman.
Sonic’s not stupid either, he’s gonna know right away that Rock is different, and the big kicker should be that Rock wouldn’t *want* to fight the Blue Blur. Sonic’s gonna be the one to make the first move to start the Hero vs Hero fight.
Also, I laughed at Flynn trying to remind himself this isn’t the “Wily and Eggman Super Show” XD
Will there be references to spinoff games along the way? Mega Man would try to make a comeback saying that your villain only had a modified puzzle adventure or something like that while Sonic outwits him by going that Drs light and wily had an all time high in a gambling paradise.
Honestly, I’m not happy with this little turn of events. I’ve been following the Mega Man comics since they started and I don’t like the idea of plugging this gimmick into the middle of the storyline. They should’ve pitched this as a spin-off, and kept it apart from the on-going run. The comics thus far have been good, they should focus on moving forward, not further sideways.
So, how’s the crossover going to fit into continuity for both series, especially the Sonic comic canon (which is already convulted as it is)? Is it going to be one of those “another time, another place” moments that won’t make any difference in the separate storylines?
@Maetch
Numerous interviews pretty much flat out state it’s going to be noncanon to both series.
Which is good because it means if you don’t care about Sonic you can skip the whole thing and not miss anything important.
Eggman & Wily Super Show? DO WANT
anyway…Sonic And megaman fight won’t be an all out duel…first Sonic will think that megaman is an Eggman Robot…..he attacks Megaman and Megaman tries to tell him that he is a friendly robot…sonic stopped with caution and suddenly Dr Eggman & Dr Wily will ambush both of them with an army of Robots(minions not robot masters) Megaman Defends Sonic and then Sonic realizes that Megaman is a good guy…they become friends and team up to fight Wily and Eggman……that’s what I think would happen in the first issue…it won’t be an all out Duel…it will be a missunderstanding short fight…….dude this is a comic not a crossover fighting game where they might have an all out duel
I guess my joke fell flat…
Guess what will happen.

ManwholovesRockamusic: I think we all got the point.
@Maetech
It’s not that complicated…keep up.
the new writer has fixed things.
I’m glad they start out fighting. I see Megaman angry at Sonic for hogging all the crossovers with Mario.
Regarding Spikes: In the games, the instant-kill variety certainly make a big impression on our memories, but most people forget that it is only special spike-traps that cause Rock to explode. Regular spikes, such as those found on Needle Man, Needle Harry, the Knight Crusher, “Mr. X”‘s crusher ball, Punk, and many, many others merely damage Mega Man (and often times, not much at all).
Only spike-traps kill instantly and their technology makes them expensive for Wily to produce, hence why they are not found everywhere. Sonic’s spikes are neither monomolecular nor charged with enormous quantities of power, ergo Rock has no inherent weakness here for Sonic to exploit.
Treated properly, Rock and Sonic should match up well win a fight.
I can imagine a good reason why Rock would fight Sonic without too much provocation, and here’s why:
Fast, boastful, arrogant and relentless. Aside from using these things for good, Sonic’s psyche profile matches up with Quick Man thus far, and we ALL know how Quick made Rock hate him.
As for Forte working out so early, I can see that happening, too. We already introduced Doc Cossack and Pharaoh Man earlier, and most people forget how Bass STARTED: he pretended to be a fellow robot hero. All they have to do is have Bass playing the hero from earlier on and BAM, we have a workable Forte in earlier than MM7.
As for Rock versus Sonic, I can see a lot of dents on Rock’s armor from Spin Dashes, and a lot of burns and bruises on Sonic. Obviously, Sonic packs a pretty big punch in his ball techniques, but Rock has a variety of powers at his disposal. By slowing time ala Time Man, he could create the illusion of matching Sonic’s speed. By Oil Slick, he could use Sonic’s speed against him. And by Guts Arm, the Blue Blur might find himself crashing headlong into a fist that can rip steel like paper.
There’s tons of possibilities, just keep your minds open!
@Sasquatch
Yeah, good point… I almost forgot that Bass pretended to be one of the good guys at the beginning of megaman 7…
@Sasquatch: Rock vs Sonic
Without powerups, both have superhuman agility and reflexes. Sonic has far superior speed while Mega Man possesses superior durability, strength (1500 horsepower minimum), and firepower. The factors even out quite nicely.
I can’t wait to see them fight side by side. Wily and Eggman won’t stand a chance.
I am just delighted that Rockman is recieving front stage in this crossover. Rockman would get ricocheete a lot against the spin dash, but he does have the ability to adapt so this will be a intense entertaining battle.
wish this was a game
