A Mega Man X Video Short
Posted on April 4th, 2012 by LBD "Nytetrayn"
Andrew Goodwin of the band “Awake! Awake!” passed along to us the following video, which he and his friend Olan Rogers recently completed. Most of us are familiar by now with the opening text of the first Mega Man X game, but did you ever wonder what sort of tests Dr. Light ran while X was sealed in his capsule? The following short film portrays one such idea:
So as not to spoil anyone, we’ll simply link you to the video’s page here to find out why they chose this type of situation to serve as the test. Plus, if you’re interested in a free copy of the soundtrack, then you’ll want to click here.

It’s about time Rockman, Rockman X and Rockman Zero were made into a proper film trilogy by professionals.. I’m sick of watching all these fanmade teasers.
Careful. You’re riding the line between wishing for a big budget Blue Bomber and wishing for a big budget Blue Bomber at the expense of dedicated, passionate fans.
I would hope we could all agree that, at the very least, whatever our particular tastes may be, seeing fans go to this much trouble to create such a time consuming homage to Rockman/Mega Man is something to commended, not dismissed.
I think it looks cool, better than the Lebron film by miles.
Would’ve been an awesome video if it was just the Dr. Light part. Showing that lame fight ruined it completely for me.
Everyone take note, THIS is how you do armor in a Mega Man fan movie. None of that hockey gear crap, legitimate looking armor.
This made my day.
I agree with CC that the Dr. Light bit was more interesting. I always wondered what Light was really up to in the time between what we know of Classic and X timelines. I mean, he built all those capsules and stuff, right… but here in this video, we just see that aparently X’s “reliability” can only be determined by defeating Protoman? What?
I’m all for fan projects and stuff, and I think they did a good job, but would it really have killed the Protoman and X actors to BEND THEIR FREAKIN LEGS for the jumping animations? Watching people slide accross the screen like air hockey pucks in complete disregard for physics just bothers me. I’m not asking for anything special, just some believability.
Interesting.
I think the reliability part was that X didn’t attack Proto Man when he was already down. It showed that he wasn’t wild or ruthless or whatever.
This epicness is beyond epic
wow really thats megaman x? i lame… he is the same armor with protoman
Megaman X’s face looks like Willy Wonka. EPIC FAIL. battle scenes were overly dramatic and underacted, however the intro as well as the costumes were A+
I was really excited for this movie until they showed the fighting. That was just terrible, but they did put in some good sound effects such as the buster shots. Another gripe I have is the choice for the armor. Granted, the armor is leagues ahead of the armor in other Mega Man fan films, but it just doesn’t feel like Mega Man, and instead feels like something out of an expensive laser tag set IMO. Lastly, as mentioned in some posts above, the actor choice isn’t the best, but this is understandable because most fan filmmakers have a small group to work with. Overall, this wasn’t very good, but it definitely has potential if it was expanded.
Eh, to each their own I guess. Would’ve been nicer to left the Dr. Light half as a teaser though.
But that’s to expect with fight scenes in that kinda budget, it’s not Tron Legacy, no? (love the Protoman.EXE nod, though)
Felt like I was watching Tron lol. Kudos to whomever made the costume for X, Protoman however looks a bit lame. They chose a poor actor for X, he looks like he should have been the mm1 box art Megaman.
Well i was always curious to what kind of tests X was put through ,but I wasn’t expecting a Protoman fight. Oh well there is potential here just needs to be polished quite a b
Pahahaha! Sorry, that was just god awful. It started out promising, but as soon as X himself appeared on screen, I couldn’t stop laughing.
The “armor” was simply pathetic; about as convincing as the biker outfits worn by the cyborgs in Mortal Kombat 3. The expressions on his face were so over the top that I couldn’t help but laugh every time he emoted. He looked like a cheesy villain from a Robocop ripoff film.
And the fight scene itself was boring, poorly shot, and unoriginal. Even the sound design was below par, with the sounds of the busters lacking any sort of ‘pop’. Music was okay, but nothing spectacular.
The LeBron film may not have been all that great, but it was still leagues above this.
This kind of thing is why Bad Box Art Mega Man was conceived, and also why he made a comeback. Japan sees this kind of thing and thinks, “Is this really what people in the West want to see?!”
Come on, people. Rockman is not The Terminator. Save the drama for your mama… or something along those lines.
this was pretty good. the fight scene was kinda meh, but it wasn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
If you guys don’t like it, why not make something better? if you can’t, then shut up, because they’re better than you.
And yeah, this is waaaaay better than the lebron film where protoman falcon punches elecman’s head off…
I’m rather upset that so many fans of X are bashing this video. Olan Rogers is an independent Youtube video maker that uses his own time and money to work on projects that HE wants to do. He is not a Youtube partner, though I believe he has been offered to be in the past.
Olan does all of his own story writing, acting (plus a few additional actors), and editing to create the video he wants. He had been talking about this one for months, and I’m blown away that he came through with it and finished it up!
It’s fine if you don’t like it, but don’t bash it just because the effects aren’t perfect. For a video with a single non-professional editor, it’s really not that bad.
Shame on those who are bashing this film. Not only did he spend about $700 to make this, but he also touched up on something no one else seems to care about. The tests that were conducted on X. X has pretty much been my role model, not because he’s powerful, but because of the kind heart he has. Unlike any of the reploids created off of his design, he was in the capsule, tested for his reliability. Being able to make one’s own choices can be dangerous or promising, but what people are missing from this video is that Dr. Light didn’t test X’s reliability by his ability to fight, but it all came down to showing mercy to his enemy when he clearly could have finished him off. X willingly chooses to do good, even when he has the choice to not.
P.S. I also like the costume, it reminds me of his design in the Zero series.
Since when was the Lebron movie a joke? Is there really enough material in Mega Man 1 to have handled it any better?
This was interesting, for sure. Way to make the idea of a super robot sitting in a capsule in a ruined lab a heck of a lot more foreboding. I can’t say I disagreed with the armor choices, either.
It’s just that a Protoman fight is NOT what I thought of when I hear “Functionality tests”.
Cleveland Rock nailed it. For a $700 personal project, it’s pretty nice. But this is not MMX at all. I’m all for personal interpretation, but when the only interpretation Western fans can come up with is basically Robocop, it gets stale after a while.
I seriously have to ask what even possesses so many people to change a cute blue robot kid from Japan into a crusty middle aged man in tin foil?
y’know, while it’s nice that Andrew Goodwin passed it along and all, I did send this tip in, like, the day it came out.
;_;
no one loves me anymore
That didn’t look like X. It looked like a Zero series styled Rock. But angrier. Not shooting Protoman when he was down didn’t really seem to do justice to X’s compassion. X is a great fighter, but he doesn’t like to fight. He should have been more resistant at first, and only really fight back after it was “made clear” that the only choice he had was to fight.
Hell, Dr. Light said in X1 that he hoped X could live out a peaceful life, and portrayed some disappointment at the fact that the world wouldn’t allow him the chance. He expected it, but he didn’t like it. The way X fought in this scene, it doesn’t portray a robot built by a man wanting peace.
Granted, despite my ranting, I don’t hate this. It looks pretty good, especially for a fan project. I love the armor, especially because it reminds me of the Zero series. Plus, you can tell they enjoyed making this little film. I’m just picky about the portrayal of my favorite video game character.
I’m surprised so that they are a lot of people posting some negative comments on the fan made film.
I mean, it’s not like fans had anything to get excited about lately, just appreciate the effort.
Another thing no one has pointed out is the sinister glowing eyes. Why? WHY?
I just went back and watched Lebron’s Megaman trailer. It is so much better in most departments. This project certainly had higher QUALITY costumes, however they are over-stylized and end up just looking wacky. This project also had a better actor for Dr. Light, I think. Lebron’s trailer has obviously superior visual effects, 3D Robot Masters and the really odd looking Dr. Wily which I somehow liked quite a bit.
MOVIE MOVIE MOVIE MOVIE! NOW!….. actor was a little old looking compared to how X should look(between 14-18 maybe?) and the fights need a little fixing (jumping and stuff i mean) but god i will die happy if they ever sucessfully make a Megaman X film. Thats all i ask for.
For $700, a few props, a few actors who worked this for FREE, some greenscreen, and some editing and animation, this actually turned out really well.
I do agree that X shouldn’t have been fighting so readily. He doesn’t do that, he doesn’t *like* fighting. He probably doesn’t even like the fact he’s outfitted with a buster on each arm. I admit, I thought it *was* odd he was fighting Blues rather than a Joe or Zero, but then I saw it was the testing program and everything made sense XD I like how movies do that, keeps you wondering and watching.
I also got put off by X’s eyes. I’m a total fangirl for X, I admire him so much as a character, and I think he’s cute as a button. His bright green eyes are part of that, and to see them all white and glowy honestly made me think, “That’s not X D:” or “What the heck happened to X?!”.
The armor was leagues better than the armor in Lebron’s film as far as design goes. With a bigger budget and maybe some streamlining, that armor can really be a winner :3
Loved Dr. Light’s actor, absolutely loved him
Needs more white on dat beard and hair, but the performance was the best out of all the others!
Pretty awesome vid. Needs more action though.
This…this is epic, although,my only gripe about X’s armor is that it looks too much like Iron Man’s. But the way the warning was recorded and how the adaptation of Protoman included,I could see this being the INTRO of a full-length movie
Well, I liked it. ^^ The intro was just like the intro to the X movie and that was an awesome battle.
This does prove that if there was enough money to back a Mega Man X movie, it could be good I think.
Now, granted there were problems with it like, Light looking to young and the armor and stuff, but honestly for what they had to work with, this was indeed awesome and I commend them for making it. They did really well and I almost like expect to see them in an upcoming X movie! XD
Aside from what he asked about what happened during the time Light built X, I thought that it was more like the Day of Sigma, Light was old now, very old. And I thought that inside the capsule, why X may have fought in some cyberspace-type thing, it was more that his realialbity, the actions he would choose and not choose that was tested over time to make sure he would make the right choices. One reason why I like the clip is because it showed that a bit after he beat protoman. All in all, great clip! ^^ Now just get the money and make a movie. XD
Zerothemaster: Hmm, strange. I just checked back to see if I missed it, but there was no sign of a tip from you at all. Did you use the submission form, or e-mail us directly?
@LBD I used the submission form. *shrug*
THIS WAS THE COOLEST THING IS SAW TODAY. O.O
I was afraid I would be disappointed after watching this, but… after I finished watching it, I realized my mouth was open for quite some time, from the sheer amazement of how everything looked and sounded! The Dr. Light transmission was very convincing of a scientist who knew that what he built was dangerous, but with help from the internal system test-runs would be able to trust his creation in protecting the world. The fight between X and the simulated Proto Man was pretty fun to see, too.
I would wonder myself sometimes about what exactly went on in those internal tests before X was awakened from his capsule. But I would have to say, this is a very interesting and artistic portrayal of a possible scenario in that aspect of the series.
And I loved the music. GOSH I loved the music.
I think the quick-to-fight-menacing-eyes X was intended to create a question in the mind of the viewer as to whether X was truly reliable or not. Notice his eyes change at the end.
I liked it. Costumes and acting could use work, but my first impression was that it was cool. I wished Blues coulda used the sword more, though.
A good short-film. The conclusion of the reliability test could have been more emotional and drawn out, though. For a robot with emotion, he didn’t show much.
I always imagined the tests to look more DOS than Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad, lol.
I liked the Lebron film. I’ve watched it several times, and it just gets better with each viewing.
Pretty cool. To all the gripers it was just a fun fan project, what’s there to complain about?
Better for fan projects to try and emulate the MMX OVA and do something original with that.
For being fan-made,not bad at all. I’m not going to say anything else about it good or bad as I really can’t add anything to the conversation in that department.
What I can add is that I believe the best way to go about making an awesome Mega Man movie is through CGI. They made an Astro Boy movie a few years back that I thought was pretty cool and a Mega Man movie would be tailor made for CGI. =D
