Rockman World Returns with the Launch of the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Japan (Updated)

Next week will see the launch of the long-awaited eShop for the Nintendo 3DS, and while Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version has been delayed so that its release no long coincides with that of the online store, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any Blue Bomber fun to be had on launch day.

Or perhaps that should be “Black-and-White Bomber?”

Siliconera reports that the Japanese Nintendo website for the service is now up, listing what gamers can expect to see when it launches on June 7th. And alongside such classics as Super Mario Land and Kirby’s Dream Land for the Virtual Console, there is Rockman World, perhaps better known to Western fans as Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge.

These will be available for about 400 Yen each, or approximately $4.95 USD, a price which stings a little in light of the $5 price tag on NES Virtual Console games.

Of course, there is always the possibility of not only a different price in other countries, but a different lineup as well, particularly as it seems unlikely we will be seeing releases of Baseball, Avenging Spirit and Downtown Special: Its Kunio’s Period Piece, Assemble Everyone!! out here. But since Nintendo of America does not tend to reveal what releases will be available ahead of time (as Japan frequently does), we can only guess for now.

Siliconera also notes that there will be two releases for “3DSWare:” Mystery P.I.: The Missing Film and 3D Block Breaker, each for 500 Yen, and a trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which will likely give many people their first opportunity to see the game in 3D for themselves.

As for 3D Classics, of which a release of Mega Man 2 was hinted at, the only ones available to start are the free (until July 31st, anyway) Excitebike and Xevious. Perhaps the Blue Bomber will get his turn in the coming weeks; we’d really like to see Wood Man‘s stage in 3D.

Update: Wouldn’t you know it? Nintendo of America just issued a press release regarding the North American eShop. And guess what isn’t on it…

By installing the free update via a wireless broadband Internet connection, Nintendo 3DS users will have access to an Internet browser and the Nintendo eShop, which contains a variety of new content, including Pokédex™ 3D, an application that lets fans see Pokémon™ characters in 3D. To celebrate the grand opening of the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo is offering the NES™ game Excitebike™ re-mastered in 3D as a free download until July 7 for anyone who installs the system update. Upcoming Virtual Console™ content available in the Nintendo eShop includes Game Boy™ games Super Mario Land™, Alleyway™ and Radar Mission™. New content will be added to the Nintendo eShop on Thursdays.

Kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Incidentally, no price is given for these releases.

Update 2: Although Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge may not be a launch title, it is appearing in the ESRB database (albeit currently has no individual entry yet). So you can be assured it’s coming. Simply search “mega man” and set the filter to Nintendo 3DS games only.

  1. rockman says:

Very cool, let’s hope it’s available for Europeans and Americans too.

  2. pstart says:

    Heck yea!

    MMV come on down!

  3. Oni says:

Nintendo of America wants to fill the eShop’s starting line-up with recognisable titles- to the max.

Not that surprising that Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge isn’t on the starting line-up, really. I could see it making an appearance somewhere down the line though, they will be adding new content every Thursday after all.

  4. Matthew says:

@Oni: I certainly hope so! I heard about Avenging spirit and was hoping it would come out in both e-shops. I hate it when games from Japan don’t come to america! However, you are probably right about some of the megaman games coming out at a later time. It is very possible if they update every thursday. oh, and nice icon. Yotsuba & is awesome, though I have only read the first five issues.

  5. Rocci says:

I don’t understand. Does it cost Capcom a fortune to just release it on the eShop? I just don’t get why they would release it for one region when that means the work is pretty much done for all of the others.

  6. Oni says:

    @Rocci

Different regions, different tastes. Super Mario Land, Alleyway and Radar Mission were all very popular Gameboy titles in the States.

Not gonna knock Mega Man’s Gameboy and NES adventures here too much, but in comparison to inevitable titles which will be hitting the eShop (Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Tetris), we’re probably looking at 2-3 weeks until either a NES Mega Man title of Gameboy Mega Man title. I’ll be very surprised if I’m wrong.

  7. HeatPhoenix says:

Are you sure you don’t mean Kirby’s Dreamland? Kirby’s Adventure was for NES.

Also, no way in hell I’m gonna pay 5 bucks for Rockman I.

  8. HeatPhoenix says:

    Addendum:

Not that I can’t as it’s not even being released in America (or Europe, as I have a PAL 3DS).

  9. SeraphMan says:

I’m still waiting for Mega Man Mania. Put all 5 games as one 3DS eShop title and it will sell.

Though, 5 bucks does seem a touch steep for one Mega Man gameboy game. I mean, if you were selling the cartridge, then yeah, that’s great. But for a VC game, that feels a little high. Maybe it’s just me.

  10. Ash Paulsen says:

This is great, but I wish they’d re-release the Game Boy titles as 3D Classics instead. I’d much rather have them in color and in 3D than Mega Man 2 in 3D. :/

No surprise that we’re not getting Mega Man I in the launch lineup here, really. We all know how much love Mega Man gets here these days.

  11. Aaron says:

Not surprising to hear things like Pokemon and Super Mario Land will be among the first in the N. America lineup. Hopefully, it won’t be *that* long before Mega Man shows up… Though I still want to hear about Legends 3 prototype before seeing the older games again.

  12. Heat Man says:

According to this article, it sounds like VC titles will range from $2.99 to $3.99 US: http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/06/nintendo-3ds-eshop-launch/ So I would gather they’re going for a 100 to 1 yen to dollar conversion (even though it’s losing money with the current exchange).

@Ash: Remember that Nintendo decides what games get put up and when, not Capcom. However, I bet we will be getting Mega Man in short order, as there’s been virtually no disparity between the games Japan and US gets over Nintendo’s download service.

  13. STM says:

Lord help us when Mega Man II hits, the game so bad, Inafune apologized for it in the Classic Series OCW.

But I am a little excited at the thought of Mega Man V, hopefully in color.

But Mega Man V will do all the same. This should also be a good sign for the Xtreme titles.

  14. megamansonicdude says:

Getting a Mega Man V off of this here shop will be much cheaper than getting off ebay, that’s for sure.

  15. J. L. says:

    $o, it $eems Capcom found their $ource code$ at la$t.

  16. Ash Paulsen says:

    @J.L. -

I see what you did there. And it’s a perfectly valid statement, too, because it makes perfect sense that they’d lie and withhold the source code all these years so they could the games individually at $3-5 a pop when they could have released them together for $30 years and years ago and THEN released them again now at $3-5 a pop…

    Wait… no it doesn’t.

  17. OH MAN I still have the original GB cartridge version of this stored somewhere. How nostalgic.

  18. Bob says:

    @J.L.

    Dude fix your S key.

On topic I figured this would happen the moment they announced the shop. As I stated in that proposal thread for that remake game here ages ago, simply porting something is less cost risk than remaking it.

Oh well here’s hoping they do Mega Man IV and V at some point soon.

  19. HeatPhoenix: You’re right. Fixed.

  20. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

I CALL HEAT’S 3DS REMAKE OF MM MANIA.
