Keiji Quits

This is not a hoax, a dream, or an imaginary story.

Keiji Inafune has resigned from his numerous positions within Capcom.

Kotaku has the report, straight from Inafune’s own blog, where he left a final post with a title which makes things clear: “Sayonara.”

“A manager’s work means evaluating your subordinates and speaking your dreams,” said the 23-year Capcom veteran. “Anyone who can do both of those can be a manager. I thought that when I came here, and I still think that now.”

Having begun his tenure at Capcom as a character designer for Street Fighter and Mega Man, the Head of R&D Management Group, Consumer Games R&D Division, and Contents Management Division says he has reached the top of the development structure within the company. “There’s nowhere higher for me to go,” he laments.

“I’m leaving Capcom with the intention of starting my life over” Inafune states, dismissing the notion of taking a break, instead looking to his next challenge. “People that really know me, can see where I’m coming from. I’m not a regular dude. It’s probably because I’m strange.”

Inafune, who will also leave behind his position as Chief Executive Officer of Capcom subsidiary Daletto, ends his post by saying he will do his best, and “thank you.”

Given Inafune’s recent comments regarding his work, this comes as slightly less of a shock (though it’s still a pretty big surprise, just the same).

So much for the theory that he was “just venting.” Now, one has to wonder what fate such projects as his Western development initiative and Mega Man Legends 3 may suffer, if any.

    Well ****.

    R.I.P Quality Megaman games.

  7. MadDrD says:

20+ years is a long time, and to see the quality game go down over that time can get frustrating. Inafune said he didn’t like the fact games were progressively becoming more graphics oriented. But who knows why he quit. He will be missed.

Holy 2012!!! DID KEIJI INAFUNE THE CREATOR OF THIS BUETIFUL SERIES JUST STOP MAKING IT? It will be interesting to see what future MM games will be like without the original creator on board….

I’m giving up hope for MMLegends 3 now

  10. Z e r o says:

i think its the best decision he made… because there are some megaman sagas he cant finish because of the sales or because of the other excutives in capcom….

i hope in the new road in his carreer he can finish megaman x series with a 16bits game like megaman x2 or like megaman x4

good like inafune san. you have all our fan support

  11. Z e r o says:

    good luck inafune san* xDDDDD

    writing error ;<

    @megamansonicdude

    Lol, “BUETIFUL”.

Yeah, this is quite a surprise. But there’s plenty of other talent over at Capcom. Some of you guys act as if Keiji had created every aspect of every Megaman game with his bare damn hands all by his lonesome.

  13. HeatPhoenix says:

    @KoaT

    HE DIDNT?!

  14. Trebuchet says:

One makes you wonder: What IS going on in those buildings?

    Gonna miss you, Keiji.

  15. Heisho says:

Well everything has to come to an end, but the reasons that made Inafune-sama to choose this…well dones’t give too much hope for the upcoming games. Hope Legends 3 won’t be a “fiasco” in their efforts to make a highly commercial game, I’m not a hardcore fan for that saga but the have fans have waited over 10 years to get another game with the Inafune quality seal. In thier sake I really hope that the outcome will be a nicely done game and the future games of every saga will be made with love and passion and not the crap that have come recently to many consoles and plataforms.
    My two cents…

  16. Wayne H says:

Dear God….. This is dreadful news. This act could be loathsome but I love Keiji Inafune. I’m speechless and Depressed now. Good Bye Megaman

  17. Edge Hypermatter says:

This is bad news to be sure, but the Mega Man franchise has taken on a life of its own. Keiji was pretty much at the top when he left. I’m sure he had the authority to pick a worthy successor. Someone who shared his vision. So I’m not worried. No sense in worrying about things beyond your control anyway. Life’s stressful enough as it is.

  18. Airman says:

Bye Keiji, it saddens us all to see you go, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Thank you for giving us the gift of Mega Man and good luck with the rest of your life.

  19. Josh DiLisi says:

    my hero! noo :( </3
im sadd.. but i hope he finds something to do that he loves to do (again)
and he's gunna miss his kid, megaman :(
i grew up with MegaMan, and all of Keiji's other creations.
    ima miss him too D':

  20. Darthadios says:

I really don´t understand him. Just they found on the right track with Mega man, with Mega man 9 and especially Mega man 10, which was fantastic, and then he quits. Capcom made fifteen years absolute rubbish with the name of the Mega man, why he did not quit then ? Why now when Mega man is back ? Or do he feel that to he saved Mega man and now his job is finished ? Hopefully he just take a break and returns to the Capcom later.

  21. beetleking says:

Megaman R.I.P But this is good new if Inafune san become desinger for Nintendo or Inti creates.

  22. SeahollyCy says:

I’m chalking this up to a midlife crisis.

“I’m dissatisfied with the state of everything, therefore I will begin working on my dream game! Oh wait, better idea! I quit!”

    Or something along those lines.
Or maybe making Legends 3 killed the magic of it for him, and he found himself suddenly lacking for long term goals.

Or maybe someone else went and skuzzed it all up and now he can’t stand to see his dream project raped like it hopefully won’t be but probably will oh crap.

Whatevs. I’m gonna go play NES games and sink deep into a nice numbing denial coma.

  23. Lordssword says:

hey at least he didnt die. Dude probably needs a breather. All that pressure can weigh on you. Good luck to him. Should he change his mind Capcom will take him back

  24. JR says:

Fascinating, how he chose this particular time to resign. However, the signs have been present for quite a while, and his decision is unsurprising to me. What does surprise me slightly is Capcom’s attitude towards this situation, but business will be business I suppose.

It would be good of you to refrain from acting as though the world were about to implode in on itself due to this development, however. He was a brilliant designer, but far from the only one who worked on the Mega Man series. He has not been a character designer or illustrator for some time now (with the exception of Mega Man 9), and Mega Man has marched onwards regardless.

Now, let us look forward to the advent of Mega Man Legends 3, his final project, and the one he devoted himself to making. It would be foolish to turn your back on his efforts to produce it now that he no longer resides with Capcom.

  25. TimeskipMaster says:

I think he hit the skids on us. Ah well, just have to fire a few jerks at Capcom to get him back, or maybe he’ll take the IP rights and work elsewhere.

As long as he remembers what will happen:

Rule #1: NEVER leave a videogame saga unfinished! Someone else will jump all over it and change it for the worse! It’s the curse of Capcom all over again!
