Rockman Online Blog Starts Up

So yesterday, quit a bit of new Rockman Online material came up, via the game’s official blog. But I suppose that was overshadowed a bit by this whole Mega Man Legends 3 thing. Perhaps you’ve heard about it. Nevertheless, a bit of new info can be gleaned via Protodude’s Rockman Corner.

There are three types of playable characters classes : X Type, Zero Type and Duo Type.

X Type: This class has the ability to perform a Nova Strike, in addition to X’s other trademark attacks such as the charge shot. Nova Strike is executable after you’ve taken a certain amount of damage. Further, X’s new armor allows him to have additional mobility in deep sea and perilous mountain missions.

Zero Type: With his trusty Z-Saber, Zero is the close combat character. He’s able to perform a multitude of melee attacks to take out foes at close range and can perform a double jump to reach new heights. When equipped with armor, Zero’s defense capable greatly increase and is able to attack multiple enemies at once. Much like past games in the X series, Zero cannot gain new weaponry.

Duo Type: A heavy-class character. Duo can attack foes with his fist which can be powered up to increase damage; rockets and a “cross-beam” make up the rest of his arsenal; when equipped with armor, Duo can fly for a brief period of time; finally, he is immune to virus type enemies, but as a trade off, he cannot utilize other weaponry.

Interestingly, the site mentions we won’t actually be playing as X, Zero or Duo. Instead, we’re playing as a Reploid that can copy the DNA of legendary Reploids and take on their appearance and abilities.

Another thing of interest, the site puts a huge emphasis on the UCA — The United Continent Association. The UCA acts as the world government in Rockman Online and disperses its military forces (i.e Rockman Online players) to intervene in large scale political, economic, and military conflicts. Behind these skirmishes is the URA:  The Ultimate Reploid Association — This separatist organization, made up of vigilante Reploids, aims to disrupt society with terrorism. The UCA is constantly battling them to quell these conflicts. Whether it be small or large scale activity, the UCA is always on the scene to combat them, though they’ve lost many areas to their influence.

Considering these details, it sounds more and more like Rockman Online is a completely original storyline/world, using Mega Man and Mega Man X elements as a frame of reference. And truthfully, this may be how a Mega Man game would best work within an MMO type game. Anyhow, be sure to check the blog for a variety of artwork and such, including a really twisted Cut Man.

    So…

What’s this about slow news week again?

    ‘Cuz…

    This is pretty awesome.

  2. DJ Schway says:

    Cut Man X looks rad.

  3. Doctor Andy says:

    **** this is badass

  4. Xtreme09 says:

    You know what?
The fact that certain reploids have the ability to change their appearance to legendary heroes could serve as a very good explanation for the Fake Xs in the Zero series.

  5. Bob says:

This still looks like a bad fanfic.

  6. Arrow-1 says:

I realize it’s early in the development process, and that tangible material (that they would be willing to share) at this point is scarce at best, but am I the only one who’s seeing all of the mismatched, traced, and reused art..? I LOVE the original work, like cutman, the armor designs (save…duo’s, of course, what the frak?) but the over-modded sting chameleon, for example, kind of makes me want to barf. Also why do they have a 3d model of sigma behind the 2d art when there’s perfectly good 2d art of sigma- from the same game they got the chameleon they futzed with no less?

  7. Arrow-1 says:

Er, left out a word or two.

Am I the only one getting offput upon SEEING the various old art.

  8. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

Snap, that Zero Armor looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  9. beep says:

Might as well make the ‘main’ reploid Axl >_> Or at least make him copyable.

  10. Munchy says:

    Cutman and Wily look cool.

  11. Acrosurge says:

The reploid copying Zero is getting armor? That’s… unexpected, but not unheard of.

I wonder if Mega Man and Proto Man will be playable characters in this game. I would think that Mega Man must be playable, considering the amount of focus he got in the trailer.

  12. HeatPhoenix says:

I’m thinking X/Zero/Duo aren’t playable, they’re just examples of the 3 classes (Or that’s what I’m hoping), I want some customization!

    Eitherway, this is looking awesome

  13. Glitcher says:

I notice the MMX8 navigators are present. I hope we get to play as them too. That was awesome.

  14. RLRtheSecond says:

wow, i’m a big fan of how the reploid looks when copying X. i hate to be pesimistic… but i really hope this game turns out a lot better than it seems right now. i agree with Bob and Arrow-1

  15. Munchy says:

    @Arrow1

Yeah, I noticed that too. It’s kinda cheapy-looking especially after the awesome trailer, but what’s original looks pretty boss.

  16. HeatPhoenix says:

The only recycled art is that of those two faction banners and I think they just made those quickly for this blog, I mean, the game has been in development since 2007, after so much dev time, it can’t really turn out to be sloppy and terrible, that’s pretty much impossible

  17. JewceD says:

Is this going to hit stateside at some point? And is there any explanation on the crossing of the MM vs MMX series? The trailer that I saw was mainly based on MM with only a few shots of MMX characters. Plus I only saw the original Megaman in action not any of the three ‘playable’ characters. While I don’t have too much hope for this yet, I definitely like the look of it better than the Megaman Universe. Still, I think they are facing a tall order by making an online game. Especially when it comes to having a coherent storyline.

  18. JewceD says:

Yeah I’ve got to add that it makes NO sense to have the playable characters be the two main characters from the X series and one-time-appearance side character from the original series. Still- looks better than MMU, lol.

  19. Martin says:

I hope this game comes out in the USA soon because I really I want to play it

  20. Arrow-1 says:

    @HeatPhoenix

“…the game has been in development since 2007, after so much dev time, it can’t really turn out to be sloppy and terrible, that’s pretty much impossible”

That’s…not nearly true. It depends on their approach to the thing. I’d really have expected a bit more art to be done than the itty-bitty bit they’re showing on the site considering the amount of time on it. I mean, when I really think about it, they do need to reveal a bit more here. Why shouldn’t they?

We’ve gotten a good look at the original six master remakes, where’s their art? Is there no concept work on them for us to ogle? And at this point, shouldn’t they want their potential market salivating over some thick, juicy info on perhaps say, that mysterious purple robot? Why are they even bothering to silhouette what could only ever be (than ks to reused art) colonel and iris? I really don’t get their strategy with this blog if it’s on purpose, and if they’re just bungling it that’s unnerving.

All that said I’m sure the game itself is just fine, I’m no less excited for it, and I’m certain that there’s plenty of product for our viewing pleasure on the way. But why have this sort of…awkward in between step at all?

  21. DarkeSword says:

This is exactly how they should be doing a Mega Man MMO. Customizable Reploids that fall into character-classes based on known characters, taking place in an ORIGINAL and SEPARATE UNIVERSE.

    Very very cool.

  22. JewceD says:

I almost agree with DarkeSword with the exception of the alternate universe. But it isn’t really the alternate universe as much as it is the time line of the story. Is this ‘version’ of the universe one in which the original Megaman doesn’t die? And if so where is he? There always has been a large gap between the MM and MMX series but this game seems to completely ignore that gap– unless this game is intending to finally explain that gap. And if this has been in development since 2007 I would also expect a little more as far as an explanation. So far we have been told that X, Zero, Duo aren’t playable but represent classes but the armor that we see is for those characters. Is this an indicator that there are more than one set of armors? for an MMO to have individuality I would think that it would have to have more armors. I do have to admit that if I hadn’t seen so much of it I’d really start to think that it IS a fanfic spoof.

  23. JewceD says:

Someone also pointed out earlier the similarity in series crossing to MMBN vs MMSF. Is this a grander version of similar series crossovers? I haven’t tried that new MMBN Op Ss yet as it hasn’t hit stateside(and prob won’t) so I don’t know whether to look forward to or fear this new integration.

  24. JewceD says:

Hate to be a forum hog but… Has anyone identified the silhouettes of the characters in the background of the image of Dr Light, X and Zero? There are what looks like two other characters….

  25. JewceD says:

    NM- its Iris and Col

  26. W. Archives says:

Interesting tidbit in the blog here:

“The creation of robots, with the appearance of man, the intellect of man, and the emotions of man…

Why did man create a human-like robot?

The creator Dr. Light said, ‘The humanoid robot is mankind’s descendant, a companion who will enrich the life of humanity,

The creator Dr. Wily said, ‘As god created man in his image, the creation of the humanoid robot is man’s first step in his ambition to become god.”

This difference of opinions between the two creators started a war. A war that no one suspected would march unceasingly for many cenuries.

Now, a new chapter in this war begins, transcending the era and generation!!”

  27. Edge Hypermatter says:

So… what you’re saying is we’ll be playing as a modified version of the type of new reploid that Axl is? You know, with a copy chip that is basically read only memory?

  28. J. L. says:

    @ W. Archives

    Wow… just wow… :O

That’s an interesting rendition of Drs Light and Wily; it gives us a little more insight of Wily’s ideas behind simpke world domination.

A more mature Mega Man game would give these characters the depht they need, so that we can focus them outside the old and clichéed “good scientist vd. mad scientist” stuff.

  29. Blues says:

Eh, pretty cool, but crushes my hopes of it being like the trailer.

(In other words, I wanted it to be more Classic-based rather than X series. T-T Not that I have anything against the X series, but I’ve never played it)

And, pretty much what Arrow said.

  30. pedro says:

I read a similar article on protodudes site, but there were some differences. Accorcing to him the UCA out of desparation from the attacks from the mavericks of the URA they created clones of the long dead X and Zero and placed their original DNA data into the shells. The URA created maverick out of clones of the robot masters

  31. JewceD says:

That is at least a little bit of an explanation.. but still where does the original megaman fit into all of this? I mean, he was ALL OVER the trailer and I didn’t see X, Zero, or Duo once in it.

  32. pedro says:

my only gues is that the original classic characters were also cloned and work with the maverick hunters

  33. misora88 says:

hmm I’m a little confused with this, someone could explain how this new system rockman online?

  34. Megafan100 says:

Wow. The mod addicts are really working. I think they overdid it with Cut Man and Sting Chameleon. :/ Gotta wait till spring I suppose.
