MegaMan vs MegaMan, Place Your Bets Now!
WARNING: There will be spoilers here for Rockman.EXE Operate Shooting Star. I advise hitting BACK on your browser now if you wish to avoid spoilage.
Anyway, Operate Shooting Star has been out for a couple days now and seeing how it’s almost exactly the same as Battle Network, you can bet it doesn’t take long to progress through the game (the BN Guide written by Magnet for example helps tremendously when you don’t know Japanese). That being said one of the most frequently asked questions has been when does the Star Force stuff happen and when do you get to kick the tar out of Geo Stelar?
After the ElecMan scenario actually, so it’s almost right before the end for those keeping track. Following ElecMan’s defeat Mayl is harassed by Count Zap and Madoi and calls Lan over. Some talking ensues and you Jack into the net and come across an imposter MegaMan that you gotta chase down through Internet-1 and 2.
Shortly past the Shop area you pin down Geo and…
After this some scenes happen and you get to use Geo in battle. Y Button brings up a shield, X activates the lock on attack on the first thing in your line of sight and your buster is overall weaker than MegaMan.EXE’s. Random battle music is replaced with the Virus busting theme from Star Force while boss fights use the Star Force 2 Wave Battle theme.
I was kind of hoping for some Star Force 3 songs myself. Anyway this is as far as I’ve gotten, so I’ll go back to slugging away at this now.

I really liked BN1 when it came out. I’m kinda disappointed this remake eight years on shows hardly anything new, but I still think I’ll get it for nostalgia’s sake.
Now that I think about it, I’m really disappointed that nothing new came out of this game. This could have very easily been a GBA game.
So there are no other improvments? Did they add a Program Advance list? I remember the original game didn’t have a P.A. list, which made it hard to know which ones you activate.
I just beat the game o.o I overall found the life virus to be a pushover knowing that despite the fact my buster is weaker as ss rockman, it gets a lot of shots in and well I had a lot easier time for some reason. ^^;
Life Virus has always been a pushover. It’s kinda like Magicman is the true final boss, or something.
Well, SSRockman adds new gameplay/folder styles with old BN1 chips as well. I find locking on much more useful since I save space for area grab chips just to reach the enemy. Ever since I got SSRockman from the crossover event, I never really used EXE anymore. Oh btw once the crossover event is over and after SSrockman returns to the future world, is there any way to make Lan/Netto shout “Plug In, S.SRockman Transmission!”? Ever since he got back Rockman EXE after the clockman event, he switches his Plug In Vocal back to normal, which sucks IMO =/
Well this is disappointing. I was hoping for Geo to meet Lan shortly into the game, and add a Star Force twist to the original plot.
There is actually ONE instance of Star Force 3 music coming shortly after that. No spoilers on where, though.
Seriously, they could have refined the graphics (and music as well) so it was a lot better. They really should have put a lot more effort into it and use a bigger size game (either 32mb or 64mb).
Mm… My feelings about this are mixed, but lean toward the negative.
I mean, I’m totally up for a remake of the first EXE (since I didn’t grow to hate the series until 4), but if it’s marketed as a crossover, the crossover should be the focus of the game, right? So, instead of just injecting one little bonus scenario into the end of the game, why not have… Well, more? Not even a lot more… just one or two closer to the beginning/middle of the story so you don’t forget you’re playing “Operate Shooting Star?” until you’ve already finished it?
Capcom just can’t help but shoot itself in the foot with these MM RPGs, can it? I mean, by now I’m almost positive they’re doing it on purpose.
I’m very disappointed with the way they handled the differences between Rockman.EXE and Subaru, and this is especially considering that the marketing pretty much hyped up this aspect. Stuff like, “Who will you play as, Rockman.EXE or SSR/Subaru?”
1) The scenario takes place really late in the game. It should have happened much earlier, although this is assuming that they fixed the problem of…
2) …There’s no viable reason to use Rockman.EXE after you are able to use Subaru. No balance between the two at all. Subaru can pretty much do anything Rockman.EXE can, but better. You know this is completely messed up when Subaru’s stats also recieve a bonus FROM THE VERY THING THAT WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR Rockman.EXE, THE -SAITO.BAT- UPGRADE. *headdesk*
Mind you all, I’m still getting the game, but couldn’t they have at least made both of the characters -different- instead of having the other show up so late into the main game and become nothing more than an overpowered copy of the main character?
…Although, one has to wonder if they were just testing this mechanic out in this game for use in future games.
i guess ill get it. i mean the first BN was my favorate (dont ask why).
@Alilatias Thats very likely. I honestly wish this is how they did the starforce series. It seems more smooth and you have a lot more mobility. Then again thats just me.
I’m actually gald to find out that the Star Force aspect doens’t really change up the plot of BN 1 all that much. That said, the actual port could have been better, from the looks of things. New sprites, remixed music, etc. I mean, Roll’s back to being completely static except for her antenae. Kinda sad, though I’ll still likely get it on account of loving the early BN trilogy.
I think the game is fine as it is. SSR should stay SSR, (locked in back 3 panels
). I actually like the SSR series, but I don’t like the idea of SSR stealing Rockman EXE gameplay style. It just doesn’t feel good at all.
Poop. I was hoping for sum added features, and for Starforce to actually be a main character in the story. But what i really hate about BN games that the different versions were soo uneven. With Falzar and Gregar, lol, i don’t even need to say which is better. and now its the same with this. SF VS EXE. WINNER SF. Kinda obvious. But, what the hell, im getting it the day it comes out.
i think that its good and bad of how ss megaman terned out sad because of the fact that ss megaman did not have that much of an offect on the story but im happy because out of all the BN games 1 is the only one I havent played so i would be nice to play it with not that many diff. from the oiganel im geting the game the first day it comes out!
This game is just mediocre, they had so much to work with and still screwed it all up. Almost no effort involved, hell not even remixed music. I am a die-hard Megaman fan and have enjoyed every series, I almost always was behind the bad decision making that goes into some of these games. But they have to let you know “WE DID ALMOST NOTHING”. I don’t usually get mad and this is probably gibberish, but man if this goes on Megaman will really die.
I probably won’t get it now. My main hopes were WiFi and new music, and unfortunately it looks like there’s no surprises.
…So how bout that Rush Marine?
As optimistic as I’ve been and as much as I’m looking forward to this game, I have to admit I am disappointed. I was really expecting the crossover elements to be a lot more central to the plot – rather than being what sounds like a relatively short bonus at the end.
And what’s this about Subaru/Omega-Xis being powered up by Saito.bat? That is just *wrong*.
Still though, I haven’t played the game yet, and I haven’t been able to evaluate everything. I’m hopeful.
Even if the game does continue on this course, I’m sure I’ll still be buying it.
@RegalX7: That’s how I always felt XD Even when I wasn’t able to understand english well enough to know everything that was going on (I understood a lot, don’t get me wrong, just not everything). He just felt more powerful because of that lifevirus data he got and blowing up MegaMan I guess? I wonder if Wily did that on purpose as to desperately keep MegaMan from getting there, knowing the Lifevirus is actually really weak. xD
Well, I don’t really care how much new content is or is not in this game. I think it looks sweet and I cannot wait to buy it. I am a TRUE die hard Mega Man fan and I always look forward to more games ports or not. Yeah, this does seem like a straight port with a few new features here and there but then so what? It looks like a blast to play and the fact that Starforce Mega Man is playable in it is more than enough to sell me. I hope that they hurry up and relase it over here already.
Oh and by the way:
@Andy:
“….but man if this goes on Megaman will really die.”
I SERIOUSLY doubt it. Mega Man has gone through much worse droughts than this one and besides, Mega Man (along with Street Fighter) is Capcom’s big cash cow just as Mario, Link, Samus, etc are for Nintendo, so its unlikely that they will let him go anytime soon.
@Alilatias
I am positive that it was a testing mechanic, because a specific person from capcom that this was a begininning of a new set of battle network games.
Maybe a battle network 7,the main characters are megaman and Lan’s son. :] I can see it.
Omega Xis looks great.
Hmmm…. EXE vs Starforce, FORGET THEM, THE ORIGINAL MEGAMAN PWNS ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Phantasimo
I hope you’re not just toying with us because that would be beyond sweet!!!
@Airman
I’m not, that is what I read on some other sites about this game being a start of a new set of series.
So I am just guessing if its going to be battle network, it should star megaman and Lan’s son, I mean you guys saw a pic of the new manga, so its not a bad idea :]
New Manga!?! Where did you hear this, could we get the URL?
Ugh…I stopped at EXE 3, and I’m never going back, even if I did actually like the first and the second. This doesn’t seem like a good reason to go back to it again, especially since I didn’t bother to get into the Starforce games.
@Airman:
“Mega Man (along with Street Fighter) is Capcom’s big cash cow just as Mario, Link, Samus, etc are for Nintendo, so its unlikely that they will let him go anytime soon.”
I’m not so sure about that. If anything, Resident Evil, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising are Capcom’s current cash cows (with SF making a comeback). MegaMan was always great as a 2D endeavor, which in today’s world means being put on portables (or in MM9′s case, a downloadable game). Unless they bring back Legends, or reimagine MegaMan in 3D another way, he might be showing up just as much as Kirby these days.
First Fail for Capcom, plenty more to go.
@pstart
Perhaps, but I still don’t think they’ll just let him die as Phantasimo has suggested.
@iceboi72
Not really sure that this is a “fail” for Capcom, but if it is then it certainly isn’t the first one.
