Rockman.EXE: Operate Shooting Star Brings GBA Deja Vu in More Ways Than One

An excerpt from an interesting piece at Protodude’s Rockman Corner:

Guess the game I’m describing:

It’s a DS “port plus alpha” of a GBA Capcom hit which spawned a successful franchise, marketed as a ‘revival’ of the series. In it, a blue-suited hero proudly wearing the symbol of his profession on his chest does battle in an unusual environment to protect the innocent. This DS update adds a new scenario near the end of the game where the main character comes in contact with a new villain. However, the graphics and music are much the same as the GBA version. Budget-priced, the game is clearly meant to appeal to the fans, and sells about 50,000 copies its first week.

As you might have guessed from the picture, the answer isn’t as clear-cut as it may seem. In fact, it seems almost as though history is repeating itself.

Learn what it all seems to point to and mean by reading the full post at Protodude’s Rockman Corner.

    Only problem here is MMBN1 got released on GBA in NA while PWAA 1 didn’t. People in NA have had a chance to experience Battle Network games for 6 sequels, so it isn’t like PWAA where it’s a new game concept never seen here before. In other words, where PWAA may have almost flopped and managed to burst into success, MMBN won’t even get a second look.

    Now, obviously this article isn’t even talking about that. Just the fact it’s getting rereleased on DS. But PW seemed more like Capcom’s initial experiment for making DS games; you would think they’d want to make something more polished and new after all of these years. Maybe it’s just since Starforce did so mediocre.

    In the words of the Nostalgia Critic “Gee, does that SOUND FAMILIAR?!?!?”

  3. Chris says:

    LOL, go nostalgia critic!

  4. Rock-X says:

    Honestly, I can never get into the nostalgia critic. Yes, I get that the stuff we used to watch as kids are not or never were as good as we remember them, but to me his reviews are just like fans who review anime adaptations of their favorite manga: They have a grain of truth to what they say, but have the tendency to be hypercritical of everything and can’t truly be trusted. I’m sorry, but I just don’t subscribe to his line of thinking and his catchphrase “I remember it so you don’t have to”. To him, I would say in response, “I’ll remember it cause I don’t want you to”.

    Lol, never would have seen this article coming

  6. Lumi says:

    OBJECTION!

    In Gyakuten Saiban for the DS, you had a complete new case, complete with a good load of DS features (mic, touch screen, video playback).
    If the new content is as big compared to the original GBA game as GS for the DS was to it’s original, then we are indeed in for a treat.

    Still kind of skeptical though.
    But hey, the game IS called “Operate Shooting Star”, so that should mean SOMETHING, right?

  7. HeatPhoenix says:

    Something new:

    Rom protection, a virus at every step makes the game unplayable

  8. Forci says:

    There is a major flaw in the analogy, though:

    EXE1 did not include the finger of justice.

    …Alright, seriously, Phoenix Wright was met with wide saturation through the internet, including several mock videos and what I suppose is considered a full-blown meme. Battle Network, to the best of my knowledge, was not.

  9. Gaia says:

    With the exception of the origional series as a whole appeared japan only, until it came out on the DS that faithful day in the states.

    Besides, who would want to see Netto/Lan in a Pink Suit anyway?

  10. hsbinh1412 says:

    @Gaia
    I personally think that Protoman fit the pink suit more, being a rival and all

  11. AdventZ says:

    @HeatPhoenix

    Its not something new actually. The AntiPiracy protection thing has been around for quite some time. It causes many games to be either unplayable or just really annoying to play. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days had a protection where pirates cant get past the Title Screen.

  12. OmegaMan says:

    The only thing left to do is to have an Ace Attorney/Battle Network crossover. That ALMOST happened in Battle Network 6 (court scene, Judge Man).

    Yes, I know my joke was bad.

  13. Munchy says:

    What I’m wondering is why this isn’t instead Rockman World 6 for the DS.

  14. p falcon says:

    I’m going with GSR: It’s just to remind to “remind people EXE is still around”.

    @ HeatPheonix and AdventZ – There’s a video of showing ROSS’ endless hordes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkYs5wr8ioY

    OFF-TOPIC: Is there going to be a translation for ROSS’ second comic strip by TMMN?

  15. NovaManXP says:

    But y’know, at least PWAA’s new scenario wasn’t just 30 minutes long and boring.

  16. HeatPhoenix says:

    @NovamanXP

    Pyroman here, what’s happening at MMBNCT forums, I kinda left and was wondering how you guys were doing (if you still visit this place)

  17. Masterge77 says:

    This settles it, they’re gonna be making Starforce 4
