Putting the Brakes on Turbo Man

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but if the dog did something you never knew of? Imagine my surprise when I was (as usual) watching a skillrun of Mega Man 7 on Youtube.com and the player pulled off a rather amazing trick with the fight against Turbo Man. Upon seeing it I just HAD to give it a try myself and after some practice…

…oh poor Turbo Man, life is most cruel to you.

So go on, try it yourself. Celibrate the release of Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen on DVD by smiting Mega Man’s very own Decepticon, except without having to put up with Shia LaBeouf.

~Ryudo

EDIT: It’s not just Turbo Man you can pull this off on, though he IS the easier one to do it on;

    ……….Learn something new every day.

    I had always wondered about doing something like this. I wonder what would happen if this was done on Shade Man…

  4. Sammy says:

    Interesting… If I ever get back to playing Ann. Coll., I’ll have to try this out.

    Except this is one of the many stages I hate…

    … Now I’d like to see someone make cake out of TurboMans stage, rather than mince meat from the boss.

    Bring on the pain.

    Well…okay amusement aside I do have one question about this video. Turbo Man was destroyed the second his health meter started to fill up. Was this because the shot was bouncing around the room and gaining strength from each bounce or was there some other reason or had the game just been glitched or sped up for dramatic effect? For instance I didn’t know that damage to the boss could be dealt until his meter finished filling.

  6. RegalX7 says:

    I’ll take Megaman over Shia LaBeouf any day, thanks. I’m also gonna try this right now.

    MetalMan is no longer alone

    @ Chris:

    I can’t say 100% for certain, as I’m not a programmer, nor do I have access to MM7′s code, but here’s what I see happening:

    (ahem)

    The main reason you can’t damage bosses during their energy charge is you can’t do anything while said energy charge is happening. There MAY be some protection in place before the charge starts, to avoid just this sorta thing from happening, but that protection probably is removed as soon as the meter starts filling (after all, by then the controls are completely locked down.)

    So…I’d say that the reason the shot killed Turbo Man in one hit is because he only had one unit of energy to lose when it hit him, not because of any extra strength given to the shot.

  9. @Chris:
    While you can’t shoot in that boss sequence, there’s nothing stopping the developers from being lazy and not including code to prevent damage during the sequence if anything got in.

    The true meaning of the battle ended before it began.

    @Shotoman and Repliroid 20XX

    Thanks for the answers.

    Actually, on the transformers note, I have not only been a huge Mega Man fan but also a huge transformers fan my whole life and if I recall, a few years back I began designing what the robot masters would look like if they could transform and what their alternate modes would be (y’know, if Dr. Wily ever made a deal with the Decepticons or something…..he wouldn’t have been the first evil scientist to do so). If I remember correctly (I probably still have them somewhere I just gotta dig them out), I made Elec Man a fighter jet (like Starscream only he could fire the Thunder Beam). Guts Man was a Bulldozer (duh) etc etc, I know it sounds a little immature but I thought it was a cute idea at the time and of course, Turbo Man would be exactly as he is now (except that he’d have a Decepticon symbol along with the Dr. W stamp on him).

  13. Zach/G-Beast says:

    lmfao thats awesome!!!

  14. Chris says:

    Oh and of course Light would have to modify Mega Man a little to combat the new enhanced “Wilycons”, with a little help from the Autobots of course. From Mega Man to, oh I don’t know….the “Mega Car?”

  15. Chris says:

    (Sorry, forgot this bit)

    ….Think about it, if Marvel and Star Wars can make transformers of their characters, why not Mega Man (who are actually robots already).

    That quote has made my early morning. XD

  18. raymond645 says:

    Holy crap! That was awesome! And now I know how to do this battle with ease.

    Guy 1: And knowing is half the battle!

  19. Ryudo says:

    @Gamma Rallyson:

    “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

  20. Omar says:

    Wow, I thought I was the only one that had a problem with Shia LaBeouf and his horrendous acting.

    Maybe there’s another game where you can pull this one hit kill trick off?

  21. icktongo1 says:

    What I see happeneing is the shot goes through turboman however many times and is taking his life away each time it passes through him and when the battle finally does start it just kills him. The meter is probably set all the way up and the “fill up” sprite doesn’t have anything to do with how much health the boss actually has, it’s just there for show, cuz like… if it started the battle and it actually was set at zero first wouldnt the boss just explode upon appearing?

  22. Mikau Seafox says:

    I so gotta try this… easiest battle ever. XD

  23. Prince Asbel says:

    Booyah!! Dead in one shot before the battle even begins!!!

  24. Treble Bass, ON AIR! says:

    That’s great, but what does “WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR??” have to do with this? o_o

  25. Shotoman says:

    @ icktongo1:

    If that were the case, I think at least there’d be a ‘hit’ sound as it passes through him. Also, remember the Noise Crush isn’t like the Thunder Beam, it doesn’t go through enemies unless it kills them.

    If anything, I’d say the intro dance before the meter begins filling is the show. The actual hit boxes and enemy AI and whatever else is is involved in programming a boss enemy may not kick in till after he has at least one unit of energy in the meter. Thus, the meter fill is just as real as grabbing an energy pellet or capsule in the stage.

    Again, though, these are mere observations of the video, not me disecting the code…

  26. Shotoman says:

    PS: The shot only rebounds twice before dealing the final blow. Especially considering the shot is uncharged, that is not enough hits to kill him by dealing damage as it passes through him.

  27. Ryudo says:

    @ Treble Bass, ON AIR!:

    Everything.

  28. I’ve never Beat Megaman 7:

    Reason Number 1: I cannot stand Turbo Man’s level, and I spend an hour trying to beat it every time.

    Reason Number 2: Saucer Wily is F&^%ing bull#&$&! Hard to hit, you waste all of your master weapon energy and containers, you die anyway because his attacks are hard as hell to dodge, and then you restart with NO WEAPON ENERGY. Which means you basically are forced to go through the entire level again, fighting all 8 bosses again as well.

    F&%$& THAT.

  29. Chris says:

    @Legendary Emerald

    WHOA there boy, calm down and ease up on the cursing (letting your blood boil ain’t good for ya).

    But in all seriousness I do know where you’re coming from. While I never really had trouble with Turbo Man (or his stage), some of Wily’s fortress bosses are just plain infuriating. Specifically the last fortress boss (that flying skull face thing)…grrr it gets annoying. And like you already said Wily himself is very annoying in this game largely because unlike in the games prior to it, you no longer have Beat to do the attacking for you. Also Wily has used the same appearing/disappearing saucer routine since Mega Man 4 (he even used it in Mega Man 9 for goodness sake!?) I think its about time they released a game (MEGA MAN 10) where he actually has a new final battle plan.

    I don’t know if this will help or not but:

    “Strike Wily with the Freeze Cracker when he appears (remember, it’s directional). Try to remember that you can sometimes slide in between the element orbs, and then you must jump the energy bullets that come down and travel along the floor. If you can successfully dodge him while inflicting damage of your own, you will emerge victorious.”

    This was taken from the game info on this website (please consult it for further assistance). I hope this helps you, if not then still don’t quit on it. I have tried using Wild Coil on this boss as well and if I can’t dodge then I intentionally get hit by a yellow or red shot since they do less damage and then use my temporary invulnerability to attack.

    But don’t let the game get you upset and keep at it. It took me a few tries as well but you will beat it if you keep at it. :)

  30. Ryudo says:

    That and charged Wild Coils rip him a new one.
