The Unseen MegaMen of Legends 2

If you’ve played the MegaMan Legends series, you know that MegaMan Volnutt isn’t the only MegaMan around. There was MegaMan Juno, who ended up being the primary enemy of the first title. Furthermore, we find out that the titular MegaMan had originally assumed the identity MegaMan Trigger. (Don’t gripe to me about spoilers, you guys have had a decade to play these).

Fans of the series have no doubt wondered, what other MegaMans were there? What were they like and what purposes did they serve? Until Legends 3 ever comes around, we probably can’t answer those questions. But thanks to the Capcom Special Selection book released for DASH 2 in Japan, which is said to be loaded with concept artwork that has never before been made public, we can at least see what some of them perhaps would look like.

Every design you see here is a “MegaMan.” On the left we have a battle type MegaMan, a semi-humanoid MegaMan, and even female MegaMans. The character in the image on the right is simply intended to be an enemy MegaMan. Seeing such diverse interpretations for “MegaMans” really deepens the mysteries surrounding the series’ background.

Seeing these designs is a little humbling. Game companies usually don’t release such artwork unless they don’t intend to use them. So does seeing these mean that a lot of potential Legends material has been scrapped now? And does that spell bleakness for the future of the series? Or, could making these public perhaps arouse more interest?

Thanks to Fireman for the photographs.

  1. Maybe we should start calling them “MegaFolk” now, right?

  2. PStart says:

MML’s art style is so weirddd but so cool.

  3. Rock-X says:

Pretty nice to see this sort of stuff. The female Megaman with the colors looks like she would fit with those doujin shooter games. When I saw the one beneath one (the one with wings), it looked a bit like Botos from Command Mission.

  4. Marshmallow Man says:

Does this mean the rumors that art of Trigger’s original form will appear in the book have been proven false, or do we just not yet have pictures of it?

  5. Heat Man says:

@Marshmallow Man: It sounded like CAP Kobun was very certain of it, but maybe he was mistaken in the end. Fireman said he didn’t see such a design, but didn’t take too much time to look into it since he had to run to class, so I’ll see what he confirms later.

Seeing this, I can understand why people say that the ZX series’ story is leading into Legends in some way. The ZX series kinda redefined the term “MegaMan” as anyone who could harness the power of the Biometals. They didn’t have to take the traditional MegaMan (or X) form, nor did they have to be male, or even a good guy to be considered a “MegaMan”.

I assume this is something similar to that, especially seeing as how MegaMan Juno as a main adversary can be compared to Master Albert (in the MegaMan Model W form) being a main adversary.

  7. Mr. H says:

    I’ve solved it!

Discovering the remnants of Model W, scientists of the future succeeded in creating a new breed of mechaniloid, which eventually turned on their creators and began rapidly multiplying, becoming known as Reaverbots (hence why model W’s big, red eye shows up on all of them).

Some time later, Terra began to face a crisis, and in order to survive a crisis threatening humanity’s existence, the humans created Elysium as an artificial living space to be sent into Terra’s orbit, far away from the crisis Terra was facing. Only a select few thousand were allowed permission to exist on Elysium, while the rest of humanity were forced to stay on the doomed planet.

However, the rulers of Elysium (‘Master’ being one of them) knew that Elysium will have to face their own set of problems and turned to the remaining fragment of Model W for their answer. What this resulted in was the same technology that fueled the Reaverbots, yet it could be applied to humans, resulting in cybernetic enhancements that were fundamentally inferior to the power of true biometal, yet allowed enhanced movement, reaction time, and weaponry systems; the people given this technology became Megaman, Elysium’s maverick hunters.

When the crisis finally strikes Terra, obliterating the population, the humans of Elysium created the Carbons, or artificial humans, to inhabit the Earth once the crisis was over. However, the ruins of cities and other sites became infested by Reaverbots by this time, and the people of Elysium descended upon Terra to gather and seal the Reaverbots within ruins such as the Main Gate on Kattleox Island to allow the Carbons a chance to live their lives.

Eventually, the Megaman Trigger we all know and love would become a Megaman (possibly finding conscious-less Model X which became his armor or something to the effect), and when he rebelled against and Elysium and was sealed by Sera, he was placed inside the Nino Island Ruin along with Data, his memory receptacle of sorts (read the plot), and is found by Barrel, and the rest is history.

Sorry guys, I just ruined the possibility of MML3, I just figured out Capcom’s back story to the entire MML series exactly.

A groovy concept H. You get a big thumbs up!

  9. SomeGuy says:

Wow that Red MegaMan Dude has some Awesome hair XD

  10. Rage says:

It’s nice to see something new, which is actually old, from the Legends series. We don’t get that much love or do we? You have to consider all of the nice cameos the legends series seems to get Dead Rising, Battle Network games, etc. I must steal book. *drools*

  11. Darkwing-EXE says:

Some of them are pretty good. I wonder if same one can try to translate the names?

  12. Obsidian says:

@Mr. H – That is the most awsome and well thought out fan concept i’ve ever read. You get 2 huge thumbs up.

Agreed, Legend’s art style is very unique, yet perfect for it somehow. I think releasing these is Capcom’s way to increase anticipation for Legends 3….or to just create even more plot holes.

  13. Mr. H says:

Hmm… Maybe I should go up to Ifafking-san himself and ask to make Legends 3, I’m sure I could make a better plot than most of the Megaman staff are able to. And that bit I wrote only took about 10-15 minutes, imagine what I could do with actual time.

    Capcom loves plot holes.
