An 11-year-old’s take on Mega Man 2
Mega Man, a franchise that’s been running for more than 20 years, has its roots in simplistic, arcade style action gameplay. And yet there are many young Mega Man fans today that may have not had a taste of this kind of gameplay. They may hear the praise for Mega Man 9 and not understand what’s so great about it, with its ancient graphics, sound and gameplay.
This is where Project D comes in, testing out the games of old on an 11-year-old subject named Dylan. Overall, Dylan seemed to enjoy Mega Man 2 a lot, discussing the things he liked and didn’t like en route. Some of the things he says may sound silly to you, but I think this point of view on Mega Man 2 is very critical. It demonstrates how much of an evergreen title a game like Mega Man 2 is, that it can still be enjoyed by gamers who are growing up outside of the arcade era.
‘Course, he doesn’t care too much for the music, but it takes more years to develop that level of class and taste (ok, now I’m obviously showing my bias).

I really enjoyed this video, it was a little eye opening to remember what it was like first playing these games and that MegaMan can be a bit of an acquired taste.
My very part was: “What do think about the music in this game?”
“It’s alright…”
“The music in THIS GAME?”
“THE MUSIC IN THIS GAME!?!?!?!”
And then he plays the worse song in the game, CrashMan’s level.
I rarely lol but here it is…LOL.
Sorry typo. ***My favorite part was:
This is actually a fascinating video to me. I grew up playing the NES Megaman titles. When I look at them today I have to admit that I see them through nostalgia goggles. To me they are some of the best games ever in terms of, well, everything…
Being able to hear the perspective of a kid today playing a game like Megaman 2, which is often argued to be the best of the best in Megaman, is an interesting insight.
I greatly enjoyed when Dylan was asked about the game’s music.
lol yeah seriously. Great nickname, isn’t it? It’s been following me for years.
Even though he played the quote-on-quote “worst” track from the game, the music is awesome! Mega Man 2 does not feature a track that is not great
I lol’d at the part where he tries to explain that MM2 has one of the greatest soundtracks and the kid just replies “That’s what you think”.
Come to think about it, the Mega Man games has actually had solid soundtracks throughout more or less all the games
By the way… is the grown up dude canadian? I lol’d everytime he pronounced “Punch-Out” ;P
Didn’t really enjoy this video. I got the feeling the man kept leading the kid and initiating points of discussion. I would much rather have heard a solo commentary from Dylan. To be honest, I’d be surprised if an 11 year-old could sink his teeth into a 16-bit game, let alone an 8-bit one. It’s nice to see classic games still have a young demographic.
Oh, and on a side note to Heat Man, MM7 has the best soundtrack in the Classic series, not MM2. I think the majority of people who prefer MM2′s music are basing in on Wily’s Castle theme. Yes, that’s a great track, but MM7 has Freeze Man, Slash Man, Burst Man, Cloud Man, Wily’s Castle 2, and not to mention that nice Ghost ‘n Goblins homage. Case closed.
@Glitcher: I never made a statement as MM2 being the best. MM2 is fantastic, and so is MM7 – I love nearly all MM music so I’m not in a position to make such a decision. Were I to say MM2 has the best music, it would be the consensus of many players. In that regards, though, MM2 likely *would* be the best.
MM7 = Best music?
Mind = Blown
IMO, MM7 had the WORST music of the series ESPECIALLY Frost Man’s stage. It is a peculiar thing for me to cross paths with someone with a differing opinion.
UND-4D0-G: I think you’re confusing MM7 with MM8. The cold-themed Robot Master in 7 was FreezeMan, while 8 had FrostMan, and MM&B had ColdMan.
Uh… Frost Man was in Mega Man 8. Mega Man 7 had Freeze Man, which was a tune that I rather enjoyed. It’s hard for me to say which I like the best. There are tracks from all games that I thoroughly enjoy, and still whistle to this day.
The music… It’ll grow on ya. Seriously, I bloody love it. But yeah, think of how many times Wily’s castle or Flash man stage have been remixed.
I want to hear from this kid in a few years, see if he played more Rockman games.
Wow.
I used to call them “energy ticks” too. That takes me back.
THE MUSIC IN THIS GAME!?!??!?!
i loled when he kept saying that and the kid said “its alright”
although i called Megaman’s hp notches lol
I really dig the idea of hearing what kids say about oldschool titles, particularly because I grew up on 16-bit. I didn’t even get to touch an NES until my first year of college when I started dating a girl who owned one, but I know as a kid I would have treated stepping back a generation with more spite than reverence. I probably never would have changed my opinion if not for the anniversary collection hurling me back before my time.
Just like with music and film, people need to be exposed to the classics of gaming, and understand why stuff like this is still great, even if it’s too old to have been in a person’s nostalgia range.
Nice. . so the kid didn’t enjoy the music in the game huh? O well, I’m not surprised by these kids these days. Good vid man.
I love MegaMan 7′s music!
The weakest from the main series I’d say is definitely 8. The ‘limitations’ of chip-tune music is probably what makes the game designers of MegaMan create such great melodies, rather than relying on techno synthesizers and ambiance tracks.
And then you can make AWESOME remixes!
Funny how the music isn’t so good without nostalgia earplugs.
I figured someone had gotten games mixed up if they’re saying 7 had a bad soundtrack. Junkman’s theme is one of the best in not just the Classic series, but the entire franchise! Same goes for Wily Stage 3.
MM8′s soundtrack was too ambient and spacey for a Classic Megaman game, but some of the tracks have grown on me. At least the Japanese intro is really catchy and upbeat.
By the way, the secret of Mega Man 9 is that Concrete Man dashes like Mega Man X. This is a nod to the series and a possible hint to a new Mega Man X.
=D
Wait, did my previous post go through explaining why MM7 music is good and complex? Shucks..
He rated the game 5/10 are you kidding? Tell me he’s talking about the difficulty!?
@ Omar: Good eye. There are so many little things in MM9 its hard to make a list.
I noticed the other day that PlugMan’s floor is shaped like the silhouette of a plug if you look close.
By the way I don’t think there is just a “FINAL SECRET” I think there are still alot of little minor things still left in the game, I am no expert it’s just a thought.
No no, you’re right–chiptunes are indisputably a treat for the sophisticated.
i still think that turret boss in wily stage 3 is one of the hardest bosses ever in Megaman history
“What do you think about the music of this game?”
“It’s alright.”
“The music of this game?!?”
“Yeah, it’s alright.”
“THE MUSIC OF THIS GAME?!?!?”
LOL, that was funny! I also think it’s hilarious this kid rated the difficulty of the game 5/10. Wow…if he only knew…if he only knew. If I would’ve played this game today at 11, I would say the difficulty is beyond 10!!!! This kid deserves a few well-placed punches in the gut for devaluing Mega Man!!! Just kidding!
I thought this video was really good it showed the newer generation what we played when we were kids and what made me laugh was when the kid said the music was “alright” hahahaha wow goes to show how kids take music in video games
so… what the kid thought was annoyingly difficult about the game was the fact that you have to put some effort into shooting the bosses? that they don’t just stand there and take hits?
it’s 2 freakin’ buttons and in 2D, how much easier does he want it to be? freakin MM3 with the second controller trick?
as for the music, well, maybe the kid just doesn’t like this kind of music. I mean, it could be the greatest song in the world, but if someone doesn’t like that particular genre, then they wouldn’t like it. There could be many 11 year olds who would love the music!
I mean, what do they expect from this kid? he said he likes metal man’s level because of metal blades. that has nothing to do with the level!
I’d take these things far more seriously if it was a kid who enjoyed similar games. Like maybe rayman 2 for example? or something like that, a modern day platformer/shooter.
