Been a long time since I did one of this. We are at the eve of PAX, and many things we’ve wondered about Capcom’s Mega Man Universe will be answered in a scant 24 hours. However, a small realization struck me yesterday, and Boss Man insisted I write about it. So then, here we go. What if Mega Man Universe is a game meant to utilize Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move? What kind of game would that be? How would one even reach such an idea?

Truthfully, I owe my “epiphany” to Lance, based on a comment he made in a post yesterday. There was a little joking about Mega Man Universe actually taking place in a kid’s bedroom, based on the teaser trailer Capcom put out at Comic Con. However, with Kinect and Move, couldn’t Mega Man Universe take place in your bedroom? To be more definitive, Mega Man Universe could be a game that generates stages, obstacles or different forms for Mega Man based on things the Kinect and Move cameras pick up. It wasn’t until I started considering the evidence that this became clear:

In the trailer, the boy looks at different items around his room. These items transform Mega Man into other forms. This could be achieved with a camera

The trailer’s tagline is “Your world. Megafied.” This could be taken literally – things from your world are going into the game.

In an interview on GameSpot a while back, a Capcom spokesperson stated this would be a Mega Man game where imagination is the star.

It would explain why Capcom is not releasing the game on the Wii.

At Comic Con, Keiji Inafune said it would be a little ways yet before MMU releases. This would be because Kinect and Move still need to launch.

When you consider the points that way, it does seem compelling. However, I could easily be reading into it too much. After all, Capcom Unity’s original hint at MMU had many of us thinking it would be a 3D game.

To play the devil’s advocate, I tried to consider why MMU wouldn’t be a Kinect/Move game, but these speculations reflected more on why it shouldn’t. But essentially, how would such a game work? How much would Mega Man fans want to cart all kinds of stuff into their room just to affect the game? How many Mega Man fans want to actually buy a Kinect or Move to play something like this? Kinect is especially vexing, since it’s marketed as the “controller-free controller” but I don’t see how a Mega Man game could be played (enjoyably) without a controller. However, Lance did point out to me that the Xbox 360 could use any old webcam to fill the technical need.

I’ll be honest that I’m not really good at these speculation things, and my past track record isn’t that fantastic. But it is still a provocative idea to consider. What we do know right now, at the eve of PAX, is that the trailer was made the way it was for a reason. The things going on in it aren’t just random, but were thought out. So, what would you think it means?

We’ll know soon.

The album will release various Rockman tracks arranged by different musicians, including Team Nekocan of Airman ga Taosenai fame. In fact, Airman ga Taosenai will be a bonus track on the disc. Here is the complete track list:

01. Blow Through Tornado by Team Nekocan (Rockman 9 Tornadoman)
02. Snake dance by Shachou (Rockman 3 Snakeman)
03. DIVING DAY by Yamadan (Rockman 4 Diveman)
04. RELOADED by Soy-SOUTH (Rockman 5 Napalmman)
05. Upside Down Phenomenology by Deadball P (Rockman 5 Gravityman)
06. Imitation Castle ~To The Castle of Lies~ by kanipan (Rockman 5 Darkman)
07. Scissor Head by Sound CYCLONE (Rockman 1 Cutman)
08. Thermal Power by IOSYS (Rockman 6 Flameman)
09. Knightmare night by Princess Tissue & Yutaka Sekine (Rockman 6 Knightman)
10. I’m BUBBLEMAN by Hyadain (Rockman 2 Bubbleman)
11. Power of the Unknown ~Eight Power of Rock!~ by JUNCA (Rockman 2 opening and staff roll)

Additionally, the album will feature Team Nekocan’s three Rockman-releated singles: Can’t Beat Airman, These Guys Are Supposed to Help? and Won’t Sleep ‘Til Cleared! The album will ALSO come with a DVD with movies for the three Team Nekocan bonus tracks, as well as a medley of the main tracks. This amazing album will release on October 20th for ¥3,150 with tax (roughly $37 US). A pretty interesting selection for a new album!

UPDATE: After a little snooping around, I found a preview reel for the soundtrack has been put up (for a week, oddly enough). You can take a listen in the video here, although it is a 20 minute long demo. And while I haven’t listened to it all yet, it appears most if not all the tracks will contain singing. I have a feeling that might be a bit of a turn-off for some, but eh, don’t knock it ’til you give it a listen.

Among those items, new trailers and game levels for Mega Man Universe will be exhibited, so it sounds like we’re going to finally see what the game looks like (unless it actually is a claymation style game in a kid’s bedroom). Furthermore, the Capcom Unity crew will be giving out special Mega Man Universe headbands every hour.

I can’t tell if “game levels” means the title will actually be playable or not, but TMMN staffers Mainfinger and Gelgameth will be at the event to cover whatever Mega Man goodness comes. Be sure to say hello to them if you notice them. And feel free to send your own impressions to us as well! I’d go myself but legal restrictions prevent me from entering the state of Washington.

PAX starts this Friday, so coverage is coming soon!

No, it wasn’t Mega Man 11 (this time). However, in a reader poll, fans were surveyed of their favorite Mega Man series, and this is how the results stack up:

1. Mega Man (58%)
7. Mega Man ZX (2%)

Truthfully, outside of Zero barely edging out X, these results don’t surprise me too much. Though I have to admit, I don’t know if I’d take stock in a group of people whom the majority think the GameCube controller is the best Nintendo controller.

Aside from that, the magazine also gave brief mentions of the Jazware’s Mega Man JUVI figures, and the upcoming Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force Official Complete Works books.

Alternatively, if you already have a Bobble Budd, this review will also instruct you how to treat the little guy. (Hint: He really doesn’t like the toaster, even though his face says otherwise.)

Hot on the heels of seeing Roll’s true colors, here’s our first look at the prototype for Blues. This was presented at the Chara Hobby 2010 event in Japan. The poster notes that Blues will come with a detachable shield and three different face plates. As reported before, Blues is planned for release <s>by the end of the year, probably in December</s>. Price is unknown, but will likely be within the league of Rockman and Roll.

Update: According the the image after the break (which I didn’t look at closely enough), the Blues figure has actually been pushed back a little, and is planned to release sometime in early 2011.

Thanks Auto!

That plumber and the blue hedgehog have had their shot at Olympic Gold, so why not Mega Man?

That would seem to be the loose rationale applied by Capcom Unity‘s JGonzo and Rockman Unity(aka “Unity of Japan”)’s Ucchy as they put together the following trailer.

Said Snow of Capcom Unity: “If you have any ideas on what this is, post in the comments please. Someone please explain this to me.”

On another note, we usually save the “Mega Man News” category tag for stories which directly involve Capcom or its licensees, while “Community News” tends to follow everything else. And though this does directly involve Capcom… we don’t know where this goes.

Assuming your head did not explode from viewing the trailer, feel free to leave any remaining thoughts you may have in the comments below.

So, this just happened:

What exactly is going on? We couldn’t tell you– your guess is as good as ours. But apparently, the Korean-exclusive Rockman Online is going to be taking place in some sort of hybrid world– in addition to Rockman, Roll, Dr. Wily, the Yellow Devil, the original six Robot Masters, and Dr. Light, Blues seems to have a bit of a redesign while Forte is evoking the cloak his Battle Network counterpart.

In fact, they all seem to have some redesigns going on, some more than others. A unique take, to be certain.

On top of that, there is plenty of stuff for X fans as well, as Iris, Alia, and Signas all appear… but no sign of Rockman X or Zero. However, Protodude reports that other sites covering the game have confirmed the presence of the two legendary Irregular Hunters in this adventure.

All this, plus a villainous figure looming in shadow leads to a lot of intrigue. Unfortunately, no actual gameplay is shown, thus leaving that aspect of the game a mystery for now.

What’s strange is the way things are set up. There had been a rumor that Online would tie the Classic and X timelines together, but that’s not what this looks like. Chronologically speaking, if this were to be a late-Classic/early-X story, then the presence of Alia, Signas, and especially Iris seems rather off-the mark.

So does this tie the two series together, solving what happened in the interim between them? Or is it more akin to a crossover? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Following Capcom’s announcement of Mega Man Universe, fans were left with but one reaction.

Indeed, Capcom revealed a new Mega Man game, but after three separate occasions of talking about it, no one had any real idea of what they just saw. Sure, there were plenty of theories and lots of speculation, but actual cold, hard facts were few.

Fortunately, that may change in just over a week, as Capcom’s Manager of Public Relations Strategy, Wes Phillips, revealed the following on Twitter:

“Mega Man Universe is really cool. The curtain will be lifted a bit more at PAX.”

Does this mean we may actually learn something of substance? The clock is ticking down to the Penny Arcade Expo, and MMN staff members Mainfinger and Gelgameth will be in attendance. However, with the term “a bit more” thrown in there, it is probably best not to expect too much from this.

We will bring you more as we hear it.
