At the 2010 Summer Wonder Festival in Japan, Roll’s prototype figure was shown off alongside Rockman’s finished figure. An info card notes the Roll figure coming out in December, though the image is too blurry to make out if there’s a price (albeit there probably isn’t).

Speaking of “prototypes,” a silhouette of another model in the works was also featured, and this is undoubtedly Blues (Proto Man). Though not yet officially revealed, this figure is proposed to release in Winter of 2010 as well. Check out the Dengeki Online gallery at the bottom for a couple more pics.

Rockman figure fans are definitely having unhappy wallets these days.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom has just made their next big announcement: Street Fighter x Tekken. Why are we mentioning this? Only so we can show the trailer– stay tuned to the end:

Does that little bit at the end mean anything? Maybe, maybe not– we’ll let you speculate for yourselves in the comments, but suffice to say, wouldn’t Mega Man and Pac-Man as bonus characters be pretty awesome? You won’t find any arguments against it here.

For those interested in the game beyond whether or not it has anything to do with Mega Man, here is the admittedly-brief press release:

SAN DIEGO, CA — July 24, 2010 — Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games today announced that Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®. The title will make history as fighters from these two bastions of the fighting genre come together for the very first time.

Utilizing the same technology that powered Street FighterTM IV & Super Street FighterTM IV, TekkenTM characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will make the transition into the Street FighterTM universe having been re-imagined using the much-loved art style of these seminal titles; while retaining their unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head-to-head with classic brawlers from the Street Fighter franchise in what promises to be the ultimate match up.

As in Street Fighter IV, 2D gameplay will feature fully realized 3D character models battling for domination in both new and familiar highly detailed environments that are brought to life with engaging animations. In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.

The announcement, which took place at Comic-Con in San Diego in front of thousands of Street Fighter fans, was made by the Producer of Street Fighter X Tekken, Yoshinori Ono, and Tekken series Director, Katsuhiro Harada. Commenting on the origins of this project Yoshinori Ono said: “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”

Hmm, a “decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games?” Again, yours to speculate.

In addition, Namco Bandai are working on their own version, Tekken x Street Fighter, though fewer details about that are known presently.

That said, don’t expect any regular coverage of the game here at The Mega Man Network, unless our namesake shows up again, giving us reason to do so.

It sounds like Comic-Con has been pretty overwhelming for Keiji Inafune, at least according to his own blog.* At yesterday’s “Capcom 2010 and Beyond” discussion panel, the hall, which can house up to 2500 people, was fully packed. Inafune was astonished by the strong showing of Capcom fans support, which he again notes he doesn’t experience in Japan. But more importantly, he had this to say of the audience:

Among them were many pulling support for Mega Man (Rockman), which really moved me. I was also happy that there are many desiring a continuation of Rockman DASH. I wanted to yell that I want to make it more than they want me to. I am truly grateful. As long as the fans support me, I’ll do my best.

Inafune has spoken for years now about wanting to return to Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH). But now having announced an “oft-requested” Mega Man game in the works, it makes his blogging that much more delicious.

*I’m kind of ashamed to realize how much I follow Capcom developer blogs these days. Makes me nervous I’ll turn this site into something like Kotaku.

Tonight Capcom of Japan opens their homepage for Mega Man Universe. Normally this would not be an unusual happenstance, but… something about it feels odd. I just don’t know what though.

So far only two sections exist for the site, one having the teaser trailer we’ve all grown familiar with, and another listing a Rockman Unity Twitter account, with a layout that would make Geocities sob. Rockman Unity is helmed by “Ucchi,” who is a “non-development staff Rockman fan.” His aim is basically seems to be coordinating fans, a mission Capcom Unity has done for some time now.

Still, I wish I could understand what’s bothering me about this page…

While we’re not at Comic-Con, we are closely following all the details from their event, with Mega Man Universe info and perhaps some other surprises, too. Stay tuned as we’ll update this post with any Mega Man-related info until the event is over.

- It appears that the game won’t be out for a while yet. “Please support us as we provide more information later,” they say.

- And now, they go into Mega Man‘s history.

- Inafune goes into the character’s “true name” of Rockman, and how he found “Mega Man” to be goofy. Nor was he fond of the “old man” look given to the character on the American box art.

- “I know from personal experience, that more people come up to me and tell me how much of a Mega Man fan they are. This happens more in America than in Japan (guessing that’s more accurate than “in a fan” –ed.). The funny thing is is that they all introduce themselves as ‘#1 Mega Man” fan. So let’s settle this. Who in this room is the #1 fan?”

- “Ok, lets meet at the Capcom booth and you guys will have to fight for the crown. I’m kidding, please don’t punch each other. Ok, let’s talk Mega Man Universe what a lot of you came for. As a lot of you know there is a trailer and is designed to be mysterious, in that it doesn’t show what the game is about.”

- He notes that the trailer we’d seen for Mega Man Universe previously came from the idea of what Mega Man is, and what it means to different people,” whether they began with Mega Man 2 or Mega Man X. “Everyone has a unique idea of what Mega Man is.”

- Inafune hopes that allowing everyone to play as their ideal version of Mega Man or heroes from outside the Mega Man franchise will encourage players’ creativity, with Universe uniting “Mega Man fans from around the planet to play together in one place.”

- “I can’t go into detail, but you might have an idea of what I’m talking about. And for those who haven’t seen the trailer, we’re going to show that right now.” 1UP’s Mike Nelson notes that the props from said trailer are at Capcom’s booth.

- Inafune asks what they thought of the trailer, and is met with applause. He says they’ll have the game playable as soon as possible, and more info in the near future. He expresses remorse for people coming, but says he’ll “let you in on stuff that the press doesn’t even know.” At least we’re all in the same boat.

- While MMU is something he’s always wanted to make, Inafune says that’s not the only Mega Man project in store for this year. “You haven’t heard the last of the Mega Man announcements out there,” he said, adding that fans should expect confirmation of an “oft-requested thing that you guys want.”

- Crowd starts shouting titles, including “Mega Man Legends 3.” To that, Inafune simply responds with a smile and a “thank you.”

- Producer Akiko Ito finished things up by confirming that the game would be available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade services.

- And that’s it for the panel. Clearly, this not only met the hype, but exceeded it in every imaginable way.

- That is, of course, sarcasm. However, the event isn’t a total wash, apparently: there is another Capcom panel on Saturday at 12pm PST where everyone is told “a big announcement will be made.”

- Do we dare to hope?

Well that wraps it up. Kind of disappointing, really, that the announcement turned out to be nothing more than an even bigger tease. Capcom ought to know by now that Mega Man fans don’t need teases to get hyped up!

Big thanks go out to 1UP, who had a man on the site where we could not be, and to Kotaku for their more detailed report.

No anonymous tipsters, no website code hacking. What I do have is Capcom’s Niitsuma-san, the producer of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Over at Capcom Unity, you can check out a recording of yesterday’s MVC3 livestream, which includes an interview with Niitsuma starting around the 8 minute mark. But the interesting bit comes in after 20 more minutes, where attention is brought to the new stages being shown. On this, Niitsuma comments (via interpreter):

Yeah, here at Comic-Con we’re showing off the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier stage, and the Resident Evil stage. And the reason for these stages – we had in mind, instead of just having random places to fight, each stage is tied into some of the characters in the game, so as you saw from what we have released here, like Chris Redfield, Resident Evil character, so Resident Evil stage, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier ties to some of the other characters in the game. So that was the goal behind that – we’ll be seeing more in the future.

About 8 minutes later, Joveth “jgonzo” Gonzales asks explicitly about the Mega Man Legends themed stage in MVC3. Niitsuma answers:

People who spotted that stage in the game, they’ve got some good eyes. I don’t want to go back on what I said before, about characters and stages, so just keep your eyes out for the upcoming trailers and you’ll see.

While it’s nothing official, per sé, the conviction seems pretty strong that a Legends based character has a good shot at entering the game. Of course, Tron Bonne is already no stranger to Marvel Vs. Capcom, but ultimately we’ll see what’s announced.

Thanks Joveth.

There sure has been a lot of figure news this week. But it ends not! One of the most notable Mega Man figures to release this year is Kotobukiya’s 1:10 scale, ultra poseable and customizable Rockman. However, his sister Roll will be joining him not too long after, and her options are even more staggering.

Simple slated for this Fall so far, the figure can be arranged with Roll’s classic outfit, or her outfit from Mega Man 8. Yes, that means the figure comes with two sets of hair, top, arms and legs. It’s practically two figures in one (but alas, it’s not, and you’d need two for both forms). The figure is also customizable with three difference face plates, and three different types of hands.

No set release or price confirmed yet, though I imagine it might be a little more expensive than Rockman, considering all her available parts. As always, we’ll keep you posted on new details.

Then there may be some good news.

Word has it that Diamond Comic Distributors are looking into getting their hands on some of these model kits for a domestic release. Price and details are to be determined, though one shouldn’t expect their release to coincide with the Japanese one– later in the year seems more likely at this point.

Of course, anything could happen still, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground for any new information on what will hopefully prove to be an easier and more affordable way for fans to get their hands on this piece.

And if you are fortunate enough to be attending, then you’ll be happy to know that Capcom has apparently put together a fine arrangement of freebies and buyables for fans of the Blue Bomber.

Protodude has managed to round up all the items Capcom has spoken of through their various Unity posts, and it reads as follows:

Mega Man Universe foamies: 50 of these will be given out every hour. 2000 pieces total.

Mega Man 10 Trucker Hats: Cosplayers who visit the Mega Man Universe kiosk will receive one of these nifty hats.

Lithographs: lithographs of sorts will be given out during producer signings.

Servbot Bobble Buds: 1000 of these will be on-hand for booth attendees.

Mega Man Kubricks: Capcom will be selling the Mega Man and Proto Man Kubrick figures at their booth. Limited to 500 pieces.

Grab Bags: Returning this year are the famous grab gabs, featuring games, collectibles and misc. promo goods. You’ll never know what kind of Mega Man stuff will be inside!

In addition, the winner of the cosplay contest (the first 50 of which will receive a hat and foam buster) as judged by Ito (Mega Man Universe Producer) and Inafune himself will receive a signed sketch from the latter.

The fun begins on July 22nd, and you may want to check out Capcom’s booth layout, so you’ll know where to go. And if you’re interested in other Capcom franchises, a list of their swag is available there, too!
