Rockman Online Q&A Part 2: Condensed Version

NeoWiz has at last posted part two of the Rockman Online Q&A with the fans. Truth be told, though, while going over the responses Amunshen felt they had about as much substance as the Thanksgiving turkey you ate: mostly banal white meat and little of the good stuff. And since we can't really slather news with gravy and stuffing, we may as well just present the actual facts that came to light, and cut out all the "That'll be answered when the game comes out!"

  • The game is still on track to be a 2D scrolling platformer made with 3D models.
  • None of the game's music will come from existing Mega Man games; it will be entirely original.
  • None of the game's original characters (at least those conceived up until now) will be playable.
  • None of the game's villain characters (such as Vile) will be playable.
  • There is no system for choosing to represent the URA or UCA.
  • Although the game looks based on the X series from appearance, the scenarios do not slant towards any particular series. That being said...
  • Sigma is the main villain of the game.
  • All playable characters have charged attacks.

And that's more or less the info that matters. The questions gathered by Amunshen still haven't been answered, but it appears they are intent on answering question, so a part three post is on its way. Stay tuned! Also, check here for the translation of part one.

Thanks, Amunshen!

First Round of Rockman Online Questions Answered

This is a translation of the Rockman Online Q&A part one by Amunshen, with some assistance from Heat Man. These answers do not include questions collected by Amunshen from western users. These should appear in the next answer post, if they are answered.

Good morning hunters, this is Alia (the blog manager).

As per our announcement last week, we prepared a place where we could answer questions submitted by users. Mr.M, the chief of the Rockman Online development team has written his answers while going through every question.

Development is still ongoing, so in cases where we're unable to answer questions concering elements we couldn't made public, we respectfully apologize.

We will be continuing to takes questions until November 13th, so by all means, if there's something on your mind please leave a comment and ask us!

01. (from 신디루비)

Q: As Rockman Online is an online game based on the original games, have the developers played any of the previous Rockman games before...!? Of course I think you've played many to completion, but I'm curious if there are any truly passionate fans on board.

Also, the "version development"... Is that related to the development of Online?

A: There are indeed passionate fans among the development staff. (Though exactly who is a secrety... ^^)

And yes, the "version development" at the top of the Rockman Online blog is certainly a Rockman Online development thing.

02. (from 페릴로드)

Q: Does the scope of the characters appearing in Rockman Online include every series? If not, what series is the game limited to?

Please state your answer exactly in form of like "from the classic to Command mission". it seemed to appear to be references to Rockman Zero characters, so I have my hopes... hehehe.

A: The basis of Rockman Online is to contain every Rockman series. (However, since there are certainly far too many elements in all, we are planning the appearance of characters to balance the story. So, it's difficult to say what series we'll definitely use.)

03. (from 하뉴)

Q: It seems like Capcom is abandoning Rockman, so will you continue Rockman Online on your own?

A: Rockman Online differs from the console Rockman series in that it's a game concentrated on being developed together with Capcom and NeoWizGames. So, even if Capcom cancels their console Rockman series, Rockman Online is in a state where work will continue to progress.

04. (from 열정의버너맨)

Q: When I watched someone's G-Star video of play footage, the characters' functions and the bosses' characteristics seemed totally different from the source material. Why are they so different?

A:In the case of Online, we thought we should especially emphasize the multiplayer with various users. So, while considering this kind of multiplayer, we thought of bringing characteristics that are a little different from those of the earlier series when adding up each character's characteristics. (The characters and the bosses ^^;)

This is the very first Rockman game made in the online genre, so to some extent we will feel saved if the existing can understand these circumstances.

05. (from tlsdnr07) Q: Question heeere! Naturally I expect this to be a subscription game, but just how much are you thinking of charging? (And please tell me about a virtual currency in the game too. ^^)

A: That's yet to be settled so we can't say with any certainty. ^^;;

06. (from 스카이)

Q: Will Axl be joining the appearing characters? Also, I'd like to hear about the multiplayer fearures with the shop and such.

A: For the time being, Rockman Online is basically being planned as a multiplayer system with many players playing at the same time. Also, of course we plan to expand the systems for things like the shop while we add to the growth of characters... As for whether or not Axl is appearing...Anyway, please look into the characters after we have a structured service. ^^ (I know it's boring to answer this way...)

07. (from Crisopraz)

Q: Will more illustrations of the bosses with their new features be publicized?

A: This is still undetermiend, so we'll decide whether or not to publicize those considering the progress of development.

08. (from 김찬스)

Q: Rockman isn't a game that puts heavy emphasis on just its action, but its story as well. Although it's an online game, I think Rockman Online should have a deeply fascinating story. How is this being handled?

A: We plan on pieces of the world view being published on the blog from now on one after another. Keep an eye out for them!

09. (from 천영)

Q: I would like to hear about what extent of influence Rockman Online will have with existing Rockman players' game skills. I'm also curious about boss weapons and dash jumping being added.

A: When we have a structured service you'll be able to experience these things immediately by playing... Please. ^^;;;

10. (from 쿄우렌)

Q: Will I be able to do group play like in other online games?

A: Rockman Online is in development with the foundations of group play and multiplayer.

11. (from 유령님)

Q: The final attack in boss fight actially wasn't seemed cool, and...In a way, it felt a bit like God of War. Why was a system like this put in on purpose...?

A: We're considering various ways to have more fun in the game. The one that you pointed out is one of those ways, so things like this will be reconsidered in various ways during development... We're working hard to make things more cool for when we have a structured service. ^^

12. (from 로제)

Q: Are you planning on putting animations in the game? Like the teaser movie animation!

A: We plan to consider using various production elements like animation if it's necessary to tell the game's story.

13. (from Leeyeezhy)

Q: I'm really interested in who the voice actors are who perform Rockman Online's characters. Please tell me.Also, what's the story to the prologue and ending? (Note: Do online games have endings in the first place?)

A: There is a chance will will talk about the voice performers in future updates~. Also I think we ought to be able to inrtroduce story elements as well... ^^;

14. (from 시이아스)

Q: It's been said the open beta test is next year... Do you plan to continue telling the stories of incomplete series such as X and DASH in Rockman Online?

A: We plan to only tell the story of Rockman Online, rather than further the story of any existing series. (Of course it's not as though we're completely removing the contents of the existing series, but... hmmmn, that's all I can say for now. ^^;)

15. (from 로엔)

Q: Will DASH and EXE be referenced too?

A: Rockman Online is being developed with the intend to include contents and scenarios from all existing console Rockman series. Since it's difficult to discuss what series have and haven't been used right now, please look forward to the upcoming updates concerning the story and system. (This probably sounds like a way of driving hype... hehehe.)

16. (from 로엔)

Q: Following the posted materials up until now I think things are progressing as a single story, but I'd like to know whether you're using the classic and X series stories, or making a completely original story. With nolstalgic characters being used it seems existing story like may also appear...

A: Rockman Online is progressing as its own story. To some extent, because existing characters and bosses do appear, I think there is intention to preserve particular stories regarding them.

17. (from 이정규씨)

Q: Can I play as Roll in the game? Please let me use her. >_<

A: As of now the only characters are those which we've announced. We are preparing new characters, but we can't announce them yet.

18. (from Zero멜로)

Q: Will characters' armor and parts be sold as fee items? Or can they be bought in the game with Game money? Also, I'm curious how much the characters' functions (their movements and balance) have changed since G-Star2010...

A: The movements, balance and various other aspects have evolved a great deal since the G-star version. We continue to toil in this regard. T_T As for billing and paid contents, we have not determined these things so please wait for further information.

19. (from 풍천낭아)

Q: I want that helmet~~~. Will Axl be appearing with the original X and Zero?

A: The helmet... is expensive... It's probably difficult to get... hmhm. Anyway, please keep an eye out on the opening of the service concerning the appearing characters.

20. (from Ryun)

Q: Will you be able to look for things like hidden parts in special stages, like in the original games?

A: That's a secret... hmhm. (Actually since the game is still in development those things are... a bit hard to answer...)

21. (from 펑포)

Q: Question here... will you be able to play as the bad guys? For example Vile, Red, etc...

A: Enemies are just enemies... We want the players of Rockman Online to be heroes, not villains.

22. (from g_ga_a)

Q: Will it be possible to gain skills from beating bosses, like in the existing Rockman games? If not, will we learn them from the skill masters by leveling up like in any other RPG? Who among the characters are those that players can play as?

A: Since the game is still in development, we can't explain this in great detail...(When characters outside of X, Zero and Duo, who were shown at G-Star are determined, we will announce them on our blog post haste.)

23. (from 마츠모토미츠키)

Q: Will instance dungeons appear?

A: Currently Rockman Online is being developed in the way of entering to battle fields from the Town. (Note: Both the question and answer given were very vague, so I'm not certain of the meaning.)

24. (from 골숭이)

Q. How's the criteria for voice actors?

A: The voices match the characters... plus very cool...*cough*! Please check future updates pertaining to the voice actors.

Q: Looking both objectively and subjectively, compared to other famous online games, do you think that this game will give value that appeals to gamers more than other games? Can the player be considered from the standpoint of a game company?

A: For now, the focus is the players. The core of development is always "What are the players thinking of." Certainly we can't expect to account for every single player's opinions... But it's reasonable to do everything we can, and we promise to take this into account as much as we can.

Q: To put it simply, can you make a better Rockman game than Capcom presently can?

A: Personally, all of us think that the series Capcom has put our previously are amazing. The goal now is to make games that are much better than the games that came before, even if there are only a few, because they are games made in the present day.

Q: If the game still seems incomplete as the release date draws near, are you prepared to postpone the release date so you can make it more complete?

A: We're already in the processing of stretching our open schedule to make the game complete as we're working. Ahahaha.... T_T

It appears, to a certain degree, Rockman Online is using a managerial strategy when you look at the practice of marketing via a blog. In this case I'm concerned about the most important element: the needs (desires) of the customers (players), that is, how much their desires are being grasped. Moreover, today's gamers are not the gamers of old. Especially because in the Korean game market, if desired elements are not delivered, these products will be weeded out. Countless games that were extremely trendy simply ended because they couldn't satisfy desires. The truth is, while I'm looking forward to this game myself, I'm worried whether or not it will fall under the radar when it starts. Personally, I don't think it would be bad if this game were developed in cooperation with Keiji Inafune. Well anyhow, I even would like to send the development team a box of nourishing drinks to cheer them, so I'll quietly pray that a good quality game is made. I pray for that result above all else.

A: Generally speaking, we plan to continue gathering data by any means available in regards to the needs of the players, and we think we ought to accomplish making a good quality game from this sort of research.

29. (from 콜드커스텀)

Q: When's the closed beta test gonna staaaaarrt.... I'm gonna die if I keep waiting... When when when.

A: The service schedule will be decided soon... Right now we're concentrating with all our might, so it's difficult to answer on the open agenda and such.

We will provide additional details in our second round of posts.

Thank you all very much!

Rockman Online Update Discusses Force Metal

It's been quite a while since we've seen any activity from pmang's Rockman Online blog. Considering other unfortunate occurrences this year, I'm sure some have wondered if Capcom would go for the hat trick and pull Rockman Online too. However, it's still alive for now! Anywho, this time the new article focuses on Force Metal, the MacGuffin of Mega Man X Command Mission. The explanation follows that a large asteroid crashes to Earth in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, releasing a vast amount of energy. The asteroid is so big it essentially forms an island, which would later be the foundation for Giga City. Scientists exploring the new "island" discover curious ore not found anywhere on Earth, which has the property to absorb energy from any kind of shock or blow and become stronger. This ore would be dubbed Force Metal, and scientists began to experiment with what kinds of energy it could absorb and what its limitations were.

Ultimately they would be converted into equipment used for making Reploids stronger. However, Reploids with an especially high concentration of Force Metal energy would go mad, and their body would twist into a monstrous form. Though the world governments and hunter agencies themselves utilized highly purified Force Metals and monitored their circulation, they could were helpless to defend against the Mavericks that abused Force Metals. It would eventually fall to X and his companions to stop this "Rebellion" group and their plot to use a Force Metal bomb.

Presently, due to the war between the UCA and URA, the need for powerful Reploids and Mechaniloids has pushed both sides into gaining more and more Force Metals. The UCA's Dr. Gaudile continues research in his Force Metal Engine for creating highly purified Force Metals with no side effects. Meanwhile, the URA's Dr. Psyche is working to utilize the Force Metal's mutative qualities and making the most powerful and warped Reploids possible. While both sides approach Force Metals from different angles, as time goes on the results are becoming more analogous. The UCA regulates Force Metal use based on a hunter's strength in body and will to withstand the metal's side effects. Meanwhile, the Force Metal remaining in the Earth is absorbing its natural properties, and taking on elements such as earth and fire.

Rockman Online Introduces the Sky Fortress "Atlas"

Been a bit of time since we've heard about Rockman Online, but the official blog finally has a new location update. This time we're introduced to the floating fortress named Atlas. As the wars between the UCA and URA have spread across the world, it's become necessary to gain ground in the sky as well. This establishment belongs to the UCA, and is their biggest military installment next to the base on Gaia. Designed by Dr. Gaudille, it's made from a powerful Force Metal frame and has the latest Force Metal engine installed. Despite its size it has impressive speed, and can even self-repair basic damage it endures. The facility is also used for charging up and maintaining dozens of large battleships. The overwhelming power of Atlas serves as a symbol of the UCA's might over the URA. However, recently URA attacks have gotten more aggressive, and the state of affairs is growing worrisome. Scientists saw to completely safeguard Atlas' AI system from all viruses, but there are uncertainties surrounding entering URA controlled territories, where the level of virus contamination is highly serious. With intel pointing to a planned URA invasion on the fortress, it's possible Atlas could serve as a battlefield at some point. (Of course, as far as the actual is concerned, this is a guarantee!)

Thanks for the tip, HeatPhoenix! Now please stop commenting about Rockman Online in unrelated posts! :)

New Rockman Online Environment, and Upcoming Playability

Pmang has updated their Rockman Online blog with details on a new environment. Detailed info will have to wait for a proper translation, but I've gleaned a few details in the meantime. The above image depicts Kronos Forest, and area right outside of the U.C.A. base Gaia. It's an artificial forest that was once under the control of the U.C.A., but lately has fallen under the influence of U.R.A. forces. Of note, an invisible enemy seems to be attacking those entering the forest (likely Sting Chameleon, given his silhouette shown). There are many paths in the forest, but a number of them are unsafe. However, it's believed there are still survivors lingering in the forest, and the U.C.A. is preparing a force to reclaim control.

Additionally, some news from Rockman Online will become playable to the public for the first time at G-STAR 2010, a gaming trade show in Seoul, South Korea. G-STAR will run from November 18th to the 21st, so expect the first glimpse of Rockman Online gameplay to come out around then if not sooner. Naturally we will keep you posted!

Rockman Online Blog Details Gaia

Another update from the Rockman Online blog, this time detailing the military city of Gaia, which serves as the starting point for players. So far 200 Percent Protagonist has an initial translation summary, with a full translation expected soon (we will update with that). Check out the details after the break.

Hello, Alia here. The online blog is a place to visit often as I’ve mentioned before. Yes, today is “Gaia”.

The military city Gaia is located in the terrestrial northern hemisphere and is the center of UCA military powers. This is the first stop for all new Irregular Hunters.

This time I’ll tell you about Gaia.

Historical Significance of Gaia

Centuries ago, X, Zero, Axl and Irregular Hunter Commander Signas recognized the need to respond to Irregulars like the URA.

Accordingly, past commander Signas has equipped the place with similar environmental conditions to those encountered by the legendary hunters. You can learn how to fight more effectively by exploring the area.

In other words, the military city of Gaia is a training location and is the heart of the Irregular Hunters.

Military formation of the city

Gaia was initially a training city for new Irregular Hunters, and was initially a small town, but has grown because of the conflicts with the URA and as more people began to frequent the area.

Eventually the transition to facilities for large-scale troop transports began, requiring more defenses to protect them.

(There’s a section here I can’t make heads or tails of.)

The military town of Gaia is the safest place within the UCA, but intensive anti-URA targets are also the most dangerous places.

Military conflicts within the city of Gaia

(this section is giving me a lot of trouble, but calls out Doppler Town and Repliforce, oddly.)

Careful Selection (maybe should be Conclusion?)

Well … I think the story could be a little longer. I don’t know, I didn’t want to bore you …^^;

(There’s something here about a secret project, but Google fails me here too.)

Some things are secret even to operators, but some advice for the sake of all missions:

Choose carefully and always ‘worry’. If you want to make good decisions, believe in your operators, commander Signas, and keep unwavering determination that Hunters are in the right. So own your critical moments and believe.

Until next time.

Alia out… ^ ^

Detailed Rockman Online Blog Info

Yep, we're still milking the original post from the opening of the Rockman Online blog. But this ought to be the finale, as we have detailed translations of the site's direct contents. This has all been translated by Ka-hun Yu, via the page 200 Percent Protagonist. Hit the jump for detailed info on the game's storyline, factions and player types. Be warned, it is quite a large block of text. Thanks, Ka-hun Yu!

The birth of robots who look like humans, who think like humans, who feel emotions like humans…

Why did humanity create robots that resemble human beings?

One of their two creators, Dr. Light said, “Humanoids are the descendants of humanity. They are friends that will work together with us to create a more prosperous way of life.”

Their other creator, Dr. Wily said, “As god made man in his image, the birth of humanoids is simply humanity’s first step to becoming gods.”

The wars started from the two creators’ differences in ideals. Nobody ever expected them to rage on for the length of centuries without end.

Now, a new chapter begins in the history of these long wars, surpassing eras and generations!

The first post in the Hunter Intelligence Center, which, setting-wise, is being administrated by Alia. The UCA/URA post.

Thank you for visiting the Hunter Intelligence Center. I’m Alia, the leader of the operator team in charge of administrating the Hunter Intelligence Center. Pleased to Meet you.

The Hunter Intelligence Center was created to provide newly recruited Hunters as yourself with history, character biographies and combat data. Because there is a vast amount of important intel that has been gathered by the UCA, access to most files has been restricted from new recruits. As such, it may look significantly empty at the moment…

Because “Gaia” is a military complex that’s different from the era that most of you are from, I’m sure you all have a lot of questions. The operator team plans to periodically unlock access to the information you need to get used to life on Gaia, so please stop by regularly and check if there are any updates.

While you are primarily associated with the Irregular Hunters which were formed to protect mankind and repliroids from Irregular attacks, you are also associated with the UCA and are to engage combat with the Irregular forces, the URA. Today, we’ll introduce you to the the UCA.

UCA (United Continent Association)

The UCA was founded due to the need for a new organization for political, economic and military activity on a larger scale as national boundaries disappeared with the birth of a global government.

The UCA, founded by representatives with the most power from each administrative district(which are divided according to continent), is the most powerful organization on Earth, along with the global government.

As Irregular activity rose all across the world, the UCA determined that the global government’s large-scale army couldn’t efficiently respond to the skirmishes with the Irregulars and responded with troops of Irregular Hunters cloned from the DNA data of legendary Irregular Hunters from the past.

The UCA’s Irregular Hunters efficiently handled the Irregular outbreaks across the world and were acknowledged for their efforts. However, stronger Irregulars joined together and formed the the URA to counter the Irregular Hunters, and as a result the UCA also been criticized for providing the motivation behind the URA.

Iris and Colonel are the shadowed ? characters. Information on their types hasn’t yet been released.

URA (Ultimate Repliroid Association) [Translator's Note: I'm going by Repliroid because that's more in line with the "Rockman" naming scheme. Korea has a bit of an issue with consistency, sadly.]

The term Irregular is used to refer to Repliroids that act against the policies of the global government and Repliroid Union with war and acts of terror. While their activity has been constant, over the past few years it is widely believed that they have been effectively suppressed by the global government’s army and the UCA’s Irregular Hunters.

However, gathered by a common interest, the Irregular forces designated by the UCA gathered in secret to create the URA, an organization with the purpose of countering the global government and the UCA.

Those who seem to be Legendary Irregulars are at the center of the organization, similarly to the UCA’s Irregular Hunters, and through the URA’s well coordinated activity the global government and the UCA have lost control over a large number of areas. As the URA grows in size and becomes more organized, what used to be minor skirmishes have now grown into full-blown wars across the world.

According to recent intelligence from a UCA spy, behind the URA’s organized activity lies an important figure who seems to be involved with their origins.

[Translator's Note: As in, involved with how Irregulars came to be]

This concludes our introduction to the UCA and URA.

Recently, Gaia, the UCA military complex where new Hunters such as yourself were born, is also suffering casualties from the URA’s organized attacks. However, don’t worry, as countless Hunters who have inherited the will of past heroes are guarding this facility.

While it may be uncomfortable and difficult for now, us operators will continue to support you as much as we can until the day where you face off against the enemy as the UCA’s Irregular Hunters arrives. Please take care of yourselves until our next meeting.

Player: X Type

Hello, I’m Layer. I’m sure you’ve already heard about the Intelligence Center from Alia.

I’m in charge of introducing you to the types of Repliroids, Irregulars, and techniques that you will encounter.

You’ve heard about how you were cloned from the DNA of legendary Repliroids from the past, correct?

I must warn you that the ones who completed legendary feats are those who provided their DNA to you, not you.

It would be helpful if you remembered that. On occasion there are those who foolishly rush towards the URA’s Irregulars as if they were legendary heroes.

Sigh… It’s a pain to clean up after their mistakes, so I request that you at the very least patiently hone your skills.

If you know your enemy and know yourself, you can win every battle.

Like that phrase, I’m here to inform you of your abilities and the Irregulars that you have to face.

Before we begin our lesson, to those of you who are giving dirty looks, some of you occasionally happen to act friendly for no reason at all. Well, if it’s a Zero Type I’ll let it pass, but keep in mind that I’m in charge of analyzing combat techniques and that I’m also your instructor.

You just might end up being unable to tell your control chip apart from everything else.

Well then, shall we have a look at the the DNA Type, “X”?

File Number RX1135

Accessing the DNA data for X.

Access Approved…

X is a legendary Irregular Hunter who worked to destroy the Sigma Virus, which causes destructive behavior in a repliroid, turning it into an Irregular.

He eventually won his battle against the Sigma Virus, and after confirming the world was in peace, went to eternal rest.

For ages, mankind and repliroids believed that the Sigma Virus had been completely eradicated.

Now, ages later where the Irregular Hunters’ battles remain as nothing more but a distant legend…

The Irregulars suddenly returned.

To stop the returning threat, the UCA cloned the heroes of the past.

The first to be copied was X, who brought forth numerous victories against the Irregulars.

The “X” that was born by cloning X’s DNA data is almost identical to the original X in appearance and ability, but lacks his memories, including combat techniques.

This X copy is a different entity from the X of the past, but people believe that like the X of the past it will be a beacon to bring hope to mankind and repliroids once more.

Combat capabilities

The X-Buster is X’s signature weapon. This high-energy weapon can fire multiple high-temperature plasma shots in rapid succession or charge to inflict large amounts of damage to the opponent. The X buster is equipped with a function that allows it to emulate the abilities of other repliroids by equipping their DNA chips, and the mystery behind this technology has yet to be solved even to this day.

The X-Buster is primarily for long-range battles, but it’s also a multi-purpose weapon that can handle close combat by copying the abilities of other repliroids.

X Armor

By equipping armors, X can carry out missions in various environments, including deepsea areas and hazardous rocky areas. The legendary armors that Dr. Light is said to have given to X have all been lost over the course of time. As a result, an armor researched developed by the UCA is currently being supplied.

Because Armor research requires a substantial amount of funding, Armors are only supplied to highly trained repliroids who are considered to be capable of using them efficiently.

Nova Strike

X has a special engine in his body that allows him to absorb external shock as energy and release it at a later time. Because a substantial amount of damage is required in order to gather enough energy to release, and all of it is drained upon release, it must be used with caution. At the same time, due to its destructive offensive capabilities X can use this to turn the tide against a stronger opponent.

As you can see from the DNA data, X Types specialize in long-range combat but can adapt to various situations by gaining enemy abilities and can overcome environmental obstacles with armors. In addition, there’s an additional fact that you must remember, even though it doesn’t appear in the DNA data.

X was originally classified as a B-Rank Hunter. Unlike other repliroids, he had the ability to “suffer”, which caused him to avoid conflict and limited his combat capabilities. However, the reason he was able to become a Special A-Rank Hunter and become a legend was that he was able to grow stronger due to his suffering, and that he had a heart of gold.

He always hesitated and was always worried, but once he made a decision he never turned back on it. I want you to think about that aspect of X in the slightest instead of just desiring power. A man who thinks long and hard before his conviction that always goes by his beliefs. Doesn’t that sound cool?

Well, let’s have a short break. Even if you guys don’t say anything, I can tell that your heads are hurting. Whew. In order to survive on Gaia, remember what I told you. If you become a Special A-Rank hunter later on, remember that it’s thanks to me. REMEMBER. Well then, goodbye~

Player: Zero Type

What do you think is the virtue of a good man?

Hmm? You want to hear what I think? Well, it’s nothing special.

Good looks are a given. Don’t you think it’s to support you even in silence, to always protect you by your side?

The legendary Irregular Hunter I’m about to introduce to you is that kind of guy.

You don’t need a long explanation for the best of them.

Well then, shall we have a look at the information for the DNA Type, “Zero”?

File Number RX0102

Accessing the DNA Data for Zero.

Access approved…

Zero is the masterpiece of Dr. Wily, who tried to use Humaroids (humanoid robots) to take over the world.

Zero is known to be the the original host of the Sigma Virus, which turns repliroids into Irregulars, and openly acknowledges that fact himself.

However, despite that dark past, Zero defeated countless irregulars with his undying belief in what’s right, and always trusted the sometimes unsure X, supporting him by his side.

Along with X, the UCA selected his greatest partner, this hero with undying courage as the best Hunter to defeat the Irregulars, and used all of their technology to successfully duplicate his highly-advanced body.

Hunters with the DNA Type “Zero” show the greatest compatibility with “X” Type Hunters, and can protect the long-range oriented “X” Type Hunters with their close-range techniques.

Combat Capabilities

Zero originally used a Buster like X, but during the first of the Irregular Wars caused by Sigma, by giving his parts to X so that he could defeat Sigma, his buster functions become virtually useless. Because it was a weapon designed by Dr. Wily’s earlier technology, there was no means to repair it at the time, and thus he gained a new weapon, “Z-Saber”, a powerful beam sword.

He handled the Z-Saber using the full capabilities of his highly advanced body, and defeated many infamous Irregulars with his superior close-combat skills. The Z-Saber, which can now be called Zero’s trademark, became stronger after countless upgrades and Zero’s continuous training, eventually exceeding his Buster as an anti-Irregular weapon.

Zero Armor

Unlike X, Zero didn’t originally use an armor. However, the by utilizing the technology gathered from Zero’s DNA Data, the UCA has successfully created an armor that Zero Type Hunters can equip. The armor for Zero Type Hunters implements not only defensive abilities meant to increase survivability in close combat, but also enhances their offensive abilities to allow for the easier defeat of Irregulars.

Double Jump

Due to superior physical specs than X, Zero can jump an additional time in mid-air. By utilizing this ability, Zero can jump to higher places.

Most of you will probably have wished to have been born as Zero Type Hunters.

But in order to become like the real Zero, you need to put in a lot of effort and patience over a long period of time.

Since in addition to being naturally strong, he always tried his best to help his friend, X.

I’m overexaggerating? Hehe…

Doesn’t every woman have a knight in shining armor in their hearts?

I think I’ve said too much.

Well…Let’s rest for a while, and then go look at the DNA Types of other newly recruited Hunters

Player: Duo Type

Welcome. This time, we’re going to look at a different kind of guy from X and Zero.

There are probably some of you who have large chins that you can’t ignore even if you want to. We’re going to have a look at their DNA Data, the “Duo” Type.

Unlike the other Hunters, Duo’s not originally an Irregular Hunter.

He’s a lot older than X, so the UCA is pretty amazing. I don’t know where they got the DNA Data for a robot as old as him, but they managed to fully replicate him as you can see.

Duo’s a robot who made his appearance on Earth long before the free-willed repliroids appeared, but he’s said to have technology that’s even more advanced than today’s repliroids.

Shall I tell you why? That’s because he’s a robot from space.

You want me to stop joking? Then shall we have a look at the DNA Data?

File Number RC0158 Accessing DNA Data record for the Humaroid, Duo. Access approved…

The specifics of Duo are top-class classifed information. This documentation’s purpose is to help the understanding of Hunters who interact with Duo-Type Hunters.

Warning: Hunters working together with Duo MUST be familiar with the contents of this documentation.

What you must always keep in mind is that Duo has complete immunity to the “Sigma Virus” which causes a fatal error in free-willed robots, and all other variations and similar viruses.

In addition, Duo Types have the ability to detect viruses or Irregulars with negative intent.

Because they can instantly tell whether or not somebody is lying, attempting to lie to or cheat a Duo Type Hunter is forbidden.

Warning: Duo Type Hunters are made to naturally eliminate evil. They will instinctively launch a punch at even the slightest little fib. Before lying, always be on the lookout for Duo Type Hunters. A single careless lie can cause both parties irreversible trauma.

Because of this, it is highly recommended that Duo-Type Hunters are dispatched if the area is contaminated by a virus or a reploid seems to be an Irregular.

Due to the crude exterior of Duo Types, they are often mistaken for old-generation robots.

Because of this, there are cases where technicians or reploids meant to service older robots are called in when a Duo Type is heavily injured. However, this is discourtesy towards them.

They have been developed with technology more complex than any repliroid, and there are only a select few who can understand and repair Duo Type Hunters.

As such, if a fatal flaw is discovered, we request that you immediately make an emergency communications link with UCA headquarters.

Warning: Contrary to their external appearances, Duo Type Hunters have an extremely intricate internal structure. Attempting repairs and check-ups without the proper qualifications is forbidden.

Currently, the UCA is doing extensive research on the repair of Duo Type units on the battlefield.

However, most Duo Type Hunters have advanced self-repair capabilities, and as thus repair most injuries using standard repair kits.

Combat Capabilities

Duo Knuckle Duo doesn’t have any particular armaments. His primary weapon is his fist, which flows with mysterious energy. He grinds the opponent into dust by swinging his giant fist with force that befits his massive form.

Duo Armor

The UCA doesn’t have the proper technology necessary to develop an armor for Duo Type Hunters. However, this mysterious robot designed his own personal armor, which mimicks the armor technology of other Hunters. Duo Type Hunters are known to arm themselves with armors that fit their current experience and monetary deposits.

Duo can use use the rockets on his back to achieve flight for a short amount of time. Duo Types are capable of using this flight capacity to cross traps or pits more safely than other Hunters.

Duo can use his mysterious energy to provide a protection effect or enhance offensive capabilities.

[Translator's Note: The target range is kinda unclear, but if it can help guys on the same map, it's gonna be a decent ability]

You can’t see anything about it being an alien robot?

Oh my, I forgot I have higher access than you.

I accidentally leaked classified information, so I’d appreciate it if you just forgot that bit.

It’s so preposterous that you can’t believe it? Well, if you hang around them for a while you’ll understand why I talked about Duo being an alien.

Oh, before you become friends with them, make sure to follow the guidelines.

There are a lot of guys who ignored the warnings and tried lying to them.

Be careful of what you say, take care, and let’s see each other again next time~

Rockman Online Blog Starts Up

So yesterday, quit a bit of new Rockman Online material came up, via the game's official blog. But I suppose that was overshadowed a bit by this whole Mega Man Legends 3 thing. Perhaps you've heard about it. Nevertheless, a bit of new info can be gleaned via Protodude's Rockman Corner.

There are three types of playable characters classes : X Type, Zero Type and Duo Type.

X Type: This class has the ability to perform a Nova Strike, in addition to X's other trademark attacks such as the charge shot. Nova Strike is executable after you've taken a certain amount of damage. Further, X's new armor allows him to have additional mobility in deep sea and perilous mountain missions.

Zero Type: With his trusty Z-Saber, Zero is the close combat character. He's able to perform a multitude of melee attacks to take out foes at close range and can perform a double jump to reach new heights. When equipped with armor, Zero's defense capable greatly increase and is able to attack multiple enemies at once. Much like past games in the X series, Zero cannot gain new weaponry.

Duo Type: A heavy-class character. Duo can attack foes with his fist which can be powered up to increase damage; rockets and a "cross-beam" make up the rest of his arsenal; when equipped with armor, Duo can fly for a brief period of time; finally, he is immune to virus type enemies, but as a trade off, he cannot utilize other weaponry.

Interestingly, the site mentions we won't actually be playing as X, Zero or Duo. Instead, we're playing as a Reploid that can copy the DNA of legendary Reploids and take on their appearance and abilities.

Another thing of interest, the site puts a huge emphasis on the UCA -- The United Continent Association. The UCA acts as the world government in Rockman Online and disperses its military forces (i.e Rockman Online players) to intervene in large scale political, economic, and military conflicts. Behind these skirmishes is the URA:  The Ultimate Reploid Association -- This separatist organization, made up of vigilante Reploids, aims to disrupt society with terrorism. The UCA is constantly battling them to quell these conflicts. Whether it be small or large scale activity, the UCA is always on the scene to combat them, though they've lost many areas to their influence.

Considering these details, it sounds more and more like Rockman Online is a completely original storyline/world, using Mega Man and Mega Man X elements as a frame of reference. And truthfully, this may be how a Mega Man game would best work within an MMO type game. Anyhow, be sure to check the blog for a variety of artwork and such, including a really twisted Cut Man.

Keiji Inafune Vows to Make "That Game"

Edit: Well, looks like kept his word! Keiji Inafune is facing some interesting times these days. He's come out very vocally against the gaming industry in Japan, and the stagnation of games in general. Over at his Daletto blog, he occasionally takes the time to discuss his feelings, his desires and his hardships working in the game industry. In a post today, Inafune takes the time to talk about a certain game he wants to make.

There are games I want to make but am unlikely to be able to make. Or perhaps it's that there are less people who can make the games they want to make. Being a game creator, when is the time you feel the greates happiness? Surely it's when you can sell a product you made through great hardships? Or when you make a game that you wanted to make? It varies from person to person, but for me, I like the moments when I'm making a game I want to make. I can't help but enjoy the time I'm thinking "Would it be interesting if I do it like this, or like that?" Of course I'm probably happy from the excitement of a game going to market, but that's the expectation when you reach the end.

There are works that I love even though they didn't sell. I don't want to erase these from my game making history just because they didn't sell. And even if they don't sell, they're games I made with all my heart. Games that, with all the happiness and excitement [of making them], I'm confident they share those feelings with the player. I have such a game.

I swear I will still make that game one of these days. A game that not just myself, but almost the whole staff swears on. Even in interviews I am so often asked "Supposing you were allowed make a game you've neglected again and again, what game would you make?" I replied without uncertainty, every time. I would make a sequel to that one game. Before I knew it, the fans who share that sentiment multiplied. All of a sudden my feelings have begun to reach out? Why now?

In the past, there've been times I was told by my subordinates "Your games are ahead of they're time. You make them too soon." Then perhaps that [game] is also too soon. But now, the voices calling out for that [game] are the most numerous. What do the fans request of it, and what do they expect of it? No, what do they want to let me do with that [game]? What sort of ways do they want it to evolve from that [game]? Surely they are waiting for that evolution throughout the world, I think.

So, I have to respond. But, I'm not doing this per usual. I am again challenging myself with a game that is ahead of its time. This time it's a challenge at a speed that everyone can follow. The fans' encouragement has made me inspired, and as long as the fans are there I will not abandon the revival of this work.

Truly I thank you. From here on out this game will be made with the fans.

Of course, Inafune never directly mentions what game he's talking about, but I don't think it takes much to imagine a game he is likely talking about. What game has he shown a great interest in in the past? What game does he keep getting asked about in interviews? I don't think it's Kabu Trader Shun.

To not beat around the bush any longer, I would say it sounds like Inafune is mentally prepping himself in making another Legends title. It is certainly a challenge, as we know it's a game he wants to make, and definitely a game we fans want him to make, but it has a lackluster history of sales. So you can see why it would cause him some mental anguish. It is his own sort of conflict of giri ninjou at Capcom, if you will.

Whatever game he may be considering, I certainly hope it works out for him, if just for the fact I hate to see someone be so troubled. But if it does turn out to be a Legends title, I can pretty much assure to Inafune, and to Capcom, this site will stand by it.

*It must be noted my fluency in Japanese is not the most proficient, and so some statements may be worded strangely or incorrectly. However I am confident I have correctly conveyed the main idea of Keiji Inafune's post as he intended to write it.

Inafune Grateful for Fans, Fears Comic-Con

It sounds like Comic-Con has been pretty overwhelming for Keiji Inafune, at least according to his own blog.* At yesterday's "Capcom 2010 and Beyond" discussion panel, the hall, which can house up to 2500 people, was fully packed. Inafune was astonished by the strong showing of Capcom fans support, which he again notes he doesn't experience in Japan. But more importantly, he had this to say of the audience:

Among them were many pulling support for Mega Man (Rockman), which really moved me. I was also happy that there are many desiring a continuation of Rockman DASH. I wanted to yell that I want to make it more than they want me to. I am truly grateful. As long as the fans support me, I'll do my best.

Inafune has spoken for years now about wanting to return to Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH). But now having announced an "oft-requested" Mega Man game in the works, it makes his blogging that much more delicious.

*I'm kind of ashamed to realize how much I follow Capcom developer blogs these days. Makes me nervous I'll turn this site into something like Kotaku.

Ippo Yamada Has Been Keeping Busy

The week is still young but already it's brought a bit of a stir with some news. While we don't really know what it's all about so far, we do know one thing: Ippo Yamada has a lot on his table. A little while back at Spiceman @ Blog, Ippo Yamada lamented about his schedule.

For the time being, I must make final adjustments to game data and arrange music by the start of next week.

Soon after that is April 30th, the release day of the Image Soundtrack. This merchandise is arriving next week, so I also have to arrange the delivery. It's an album worth listening to you, and I hope you enjoy it.

Also running into the next game, and the next CD for June...

Of course the only thing here that's without a doubt connected to Mega Man is the Rockman 10 Image Soundtrack. The rest is uncertain, but Ippo has more games and albums on the table it appears.

Ippo Yamada Working on Zero Music... To What End?

Ippo Yamada, the primary musician for many Inti Creates titles, including the Zero series, ZX series and Mega Man 9, appears to be working on arrangements of music from the Zero series - but for what purpose we can't really say. On Ippo's Spiceman  blog, a collaboration between himself and manga artists Hitoshi Ariga and Yoshihiro Iwamoto, Ippo opens a blog post from this Monday with the following statement: "Tonight I'm planning on an all-nighter working on Zero melody arrangements." This is the only mention he makes of it, and regrettably the remainder of the post concerns the passing of Japanese voice actor Daisuke Gouri, whom Ippo held in high regard. But the question remains, just why is Ippo working on Zero music, especially all night long? Perhaps for the Mega Man Zero Collection? Perhaps a new album in the works? Perhaps just for his own enjoyment? Hopefully the answer will come our way soon.
