A month and a half ago, we learned that this year's Archie Comics "flip-book" for Free Comic Book Day, which has previously featured tales from both Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man, would now be skipping 100 years into the future of the latter title and give us a good look at what we can expect from Mega Man X.Read More

With new cover art by Ben Bates, each tale looks back to the final moments of each cerulean superhero's respective ongoing tales before the two doctors hatch their skull-cracking scheme.

It would seem that Archie's Mega Man comic book has been generating a fair bit of online buzz lately, what with the recent preview of issue #13, which begins an original story arc with new characters; an article about said issue, and the series at large; and of course, the Free Comic Book Day offering from last week. It is the latter which ScrewAttack has chosen to focus on in their latest Two-Bit Review. Of course, if you've already obtained the first issue or the first trade paperback (collecting the first four-issue story arc), then you probably won't find much new here.
Despite being a fan of both comic books and Mega Man, it seems that the writer is new to the series, being introduced to it by this very issue... go figure. Just the same, it's great to continue seeing the book receive positive press from all over. And as the book continues to find its legs and voice, it will hopefully grow to become even better still, and continue to help the Blue Bomber's overall image for years to come.
Just a quick reminder for everyone: after you've gone to see The Avengers this weekend, you'll want to locate your nearest local comic book shop and drop in for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 5th. As we noted previously, this year's Gold Tier of free comics will include a special FCBD edition of Archie's Mega Man #1. And depending on how generous your participating local comic book shop is (it varies from store to store at the owner's discretion, so check around), you can also get your hands on some other books as well, including an Avengers story from Marvel, The Simpsons in the Bongo Free-for-All, Archie's other video game superstar series Sonic the Hedgehog (also by Mega Man writer Ian Flynn), or legendary Transformers scribe Simon Furman picking up where he left off 21 years ago with IDW's Transformers: Regeneration One #80.5, among others.
You can get a look at the full selection here, with previews for most. Do note, however, that while these may be free to you, each comic retailer has to pay for these books themselves out-of-pocket, and so they may not choose to carry the full selection. As a result, you might want to call ahead and see, though they might be pretty busy.
One final note: If you're shrugging off the free Mega Man comic because it's a reprint of the first issue with a variant cover, do note that Archie's solicitation touts "bonus features," as well as a preview of the New Crusaders comic by Mega Man/Sonic the Hedgehog writer Ian Flynn. What are these features? Your guess is as good as ours!
