Blast from the Past: CoroCoro's Scoop on Rockman & Forte WS

We're used to CoroCoro bringing us information about Mega Man's future, but how often do we use it to look into Mega Man's past? Here's one such instance, with a CoroCoro scan all the way back from October of 1999. The contents is the upcoming Rockman & Forte WS, a Rockman game licensed by Bandai for their WonderSwan portable system. The game featured the heroes and music from Mega Man & Bass, but with all new wonky Robot Masters, and an arch nemesis modeled after, I kid you not, Quint. Yeah, that Quint. The most notable thing about this old article scan is the artwork it features of Rockman Shadow (here just referred to as Shadow), and one of the Robot Masters, Dangan Man ("dangan" is Japanese for bullet). Truthfully I didn't know such artwork even existed, and it makes me wonder where the other boss artwork might be. Especially considering another of the Robot Masters, Konro Man (portable stove), seems to be a favorite of Inti Creates and made a cameo in both ZX games.

The rest of the article just throws some hype at Rockman & Forte WS, and exhibits the vertical stage layouts thanks to the WonderSwan's flippable design. Check after the break for the full page scan.

CoroCoro Reveals MM10 Robot Masters Official-Like, with Pictures (Updated)

The identities of the Mega Man 10 Robot Masters has been somewhat of a tenuous situation following the name leak at CES. We've stood by our pledge not to report the names until Capcom officially announced them. And now... they have, via CoroCoro Comic in Japan. The full roster is... are you ready? Really ready? Ok, you probably know. But it's Sheep Man, Commando Man, Pump Man, Blade Man, Strike Man, Solar Man, Chill Man and Nitro Man. The above scan shows, from left to right, Pump Man, Strike Man, Chill Man and Solar Man. The other four are presumably shown on another page. These brief descriptions are given of the Robot Masters:

Commando Man: Attacks with a powerful explosive wave. Blade Man: Attacks with three swords. Nitro Man: Can transform into a motorcycle. (Perhaps Turbo Man's little bro?) Sheep Man: Splits up and creates lightning strikes. Solar Man: Absorbs attacks and attacks with solar energy from his head. Chill Man: Fires an icy shot. (Curiously, he seems to be called Chilled Man in here.) Pump Man: Has a water-themed shield weapon. Strike Man: Throws a powerful fastball.

We will try to get more proper scans, hopefully with the remaining two unseen, as soon as we can. Keep posted.

Capcom, CoroCoro and Kids Station team up for OSS promotion + new footage

bnandsfCapcom, CoroCoro and Kids Station are teaming up for the "Double Rockman Present Campaign" to promote Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star. What kind of promotion is it? Why, it's a scavenger hunt! Ten lucky participants can enter between now and November 30th for a chance to win a copy of Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star and a sticker set. However, there will also be a second chance (hence the double theme) running from December 1st until January 4th. Of course, the promotion is naturally Japan only, so that probably stops a lot of you in your tracks. So how does it work? Well, you need to find a special letter on each of the participating websites. For example, on the Capcom page linked above, clicking on the Mr. Program reveals Capcom's special character. Next, head over to the CoroCoro website and solve this puzzle, revealing their special character. Finally, drop on by Kids Station and watch the video on the top of the page with the guy who's waaaaay too excited about his job. Incidentally, this video shows off some new footage from OSS, including the appearance of ClockMan. At the end of the video, crazy man sticks the special character to his head. Why not? He already has so many things stuck to him.

When you have all three, you can head back over to Capcom, accept their agreement for entering and then input the special character from each site. Incidentally, the special characters from each page spell the name Netto... but you'll have to see each page to figure out who provides which character! Or, you can just buy the game like I am.

Updated: A little CoroCoro brings a little bit of info

715100 701170The latest info from CoroCoro is out on 2ch, but so far info seems a bit sparse.Here's a basic rundown on the facts:

  • A playable demo (likely they same one at TGS) will be available in Japan on the Wii's Nintendo Channel.
  • Bass will be an enemy character in the MegaMan Star Colosseum.
  • There is a Navi Chip for Star Force MegaMan, which is code S and deals 100 damage.
  • In the alternate issue of CoroCoro comic, which runs between the main monthly issues, they will begin running an OSS manga by Ren Takahara that stars an original protagonist instead of Lan.
  • Some kind of promotion for the game will be appearing on CoroCoro's website soon.

Edit: Here's another scan from PRC that I've cleaned up a bit, which gives some more story detail involving the crossover aspect.

osspageHere we learn that a bad Navi (likely ClockMan of course) has run off to 200 years in the past with Harp Note. Here SF MegaMan is at WAXA with his friends and Dr. Goodall saying he needs to go after them. Meanwhile, 200 years in the past, Mayl claims that Roll has been kidnapped by a blue Navi. Naturally, Lan and MegaMan EXE go to rescue Roll. This in turn seems to pin SF MegaMan as the criminal, which will likely lead to their battle. However (assuming at least from other scenes we've seen before), it's ClockMan behind the abduction of both, but to what end...?

To compliment our previous report, that sexy Protodude has got a sexy big scan of this month's CoroCoro report on Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star. There isn't any integral new information, but from the image we can confirm the existing of GutsMan, FireMan and NumberMan in the game (NumberMan isn't shown but screens from his scenario have been out for a little while now). Aside from ClockMan's scenario, the events appear to be identical to the original MegaMan Battle Network so far.

One thing that does make me a little curious, although probably isn't a big issue, is why they keep calling it a "card + action" game, as opposed to mentioning chips. This article does finally mention battle chips, but it likens them to cards. I don't recall any of the BN games before being likened to card gaming. Since their description of the system is identical to how BN plays, I wonder if this is just to entice Star Force/card gaming fans.

CoroCoro shows Operate Shooting Star battle system w/ Star Force MegaMan

As we previously reported, Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star would contain what appears to be MegaMan Battle Network's classic battle system. A couple of images from the latest issue of CoroCoro reveals that both MegaMans will be playable in this format. The first image shows a battle setup between both MegaMans. Star Force MegaMan will be able to use his lock-on attack, and apparently his shield as well (though this is not shown in the article pictures), but MegaMan.EXE will not, having his own exclusive abilities, so the two will have differences. Both Rockmans will be playable in the game's storyline as well, though it's unknown how this will work. The second page shows that Star Force MegaMan will himself be able to use chips and Navi chips. The attack with Omega-Xis is one such Navi chip. It's unknown if this Navi chip is somehow exclusive to Star Force MegaMan. Program  Advances are shown as one of MegaMan.EXE's moves, so it's unknown if Star Force MegaMan will have access to them. Next, along with the minimap there is a similar PET screen to the one from Battle Network 5 DS, albeit without 3D graphics it appears.

Finally, though mostly cut off, there is mention the original Battle Network's antagonist group, WWW (World Three), so they will likely still play a major role (perhaps with ClockMan as well?).

Overall, the theme of this month's issue is to illustrate the differences between MegaMan.EXE and Star Force MegaMan, and asking the reader which one he'll choose. We will continue to post more information as we obtain it.

This one doesn't deliver us anything we weren't already imagining; just bios on Lan and BN MegaMan. The screen above has Geo mentioning he goes by "MegaMan" 200 years in the future. One thing to note is Lan using the original model of the PET, which I'll admit I somewhat missed.

A Tale of Two MegaMans: Operate Shooting Star in CoroCoro

The first info dump from CoroCoro has finally arrived, and the game is back to looking more like a cross over again, as our heroes in this remake are Lan, MegaMan and... MegaMan. Furthermore, we have some details on the new Navi ClockMan, who may or may not be the final design of the contest winner Clock Genius. Now, here are the details that we can gather. The game seems to star both BN MegaMan and SF MegaMan in the BN time period, although it's unaware if you can play as both. Right now, it appears as though SF MegaMan is the playable one. Furthmore, Harp Note appears too, making it likely that other SF cast members will show up.

There is a new Navi, ClockMan. He is an advanced Net Navi that was created in the SF time period, but of course has come back too. He may be the final design of the boss contest winning entry Clock Genius, but this apparently hasn't been determined entirely. For now it appears he's probably an enemy. His dialogue in the picture reads "By the way, I expect this plan to be fulfilled in 32 hours, 8 minutes and 12 seconds!!" This is likely the character indicated by the mysterious post on the RnR3 website.

A lot of the game's graphics appear to be taken directly from the original Battle Network. Mayl's room and the internet areas look exactly the same. However, the facial avatars appear to be new. Also, it looks like the game has a map system like BN5DS had.

The game will contain a slick opening movie.

This is what we can gather so far. The game's battle system has craftily not been shown off yet, and these new revelations will likely bring up many new questions. Hopefully updates later this month will make things a little more clear. Stay tuned.

Operate Shooting Star looking more like a remake

664080While the big info boom on Rockman EXE: Operate Shooting Star in CoroCoro is due next month, this month's issue seems to resolve the issue as to whether the game is a remake of the first EXE title, or a reimagining of the EXE series. This teaser for next month's issue, which was posted on 2ch, specifically says that the legendary title "EXE1" will be appearing on the DS this winter as a fusion of cards and action RPG. More details will naturally come out next month. As a remake of the first EXE game, this does make it very curious how Operate Shooting Star will intertwine elements from the Ryuusei series, and the boss contest winner Clock Genius. We will just have to see.

CoroCoro Update - little else, really

clockgeniusA few days ago we broke the story of Clock Genius announced as the winner of the Rockman boss character contest held in CoroCoro. However, the image that accompanied the news was small and a little hard to make out. However, we've now gotten word from MMN viewer Fireman, who picked up the issue himself! And... there really isn't too much to add. Only the Clock Genius entry was shown, not the completed official artwork by Capcom. Furthermore, Clock was merely relegated to a small part of the page, the rest of the page covered Ryuusei no Rockman 3 news (which may answer the wonderment some had with what looked like Rockman appearing in the BG). According to Fireman, in fact, there's nothing in this issue that would even indicate next month's issue will have any information on a new Rockman game, but of course that doesn't mean it won't. Incidentally, if you were someone who applied to the contest, I may have some bad news for you (unless you're Japanese). Only one USA entrant made it as a runner up, and may be the only foreign entrant to place. The lucky guy is one Lou Smith. Unfortunately they didn't show pictures of any of the runner ups, so I don't know what the entry was. But if you're reading this, Lou, major congrats to you. You may win a minor prize.

CoroCoro Boss Contest Winner: Clock Genius

clockgeniusIt appears the winner of CoroCoro boss character contest held earlier thisyear has been revealed on 2ch, a character known as Clock Genius, created by one Gotou-san. Details are of course scarce, since our only lead is the included image. However, from the sounds of things, the new Rockman game this Clock Genius will appear in is still undecided, or at least unannounced. Nevertheless it does seem to be fairly Star Force styled, especially when you consider there is a clock constellation: Horologium. We will updated you with details as we receive them.

CoroCoro doesn't deliver

While I haven't seen it for myself, sources tell me that the latest installment of CoroCoro offers no announcement of any new Rockman title; simply just secret boss info and such for Ryuusei no Rockman 3. Furthermore, no such promise is given for the next issue's coverage - it only states that it will discuss the Ryuusei no Rockman series. So, it looks like a bit more waiting until CoroCoro, or perhaps another source, lets us in on this new MM game in the works. We may even have to wait for CoroCoro to announce the winner of the boss character contest, which is April. We'll see.

Boss contest reminder

The CoroCoro Rockman boss character contest will be coming to a close on February 13th, the Friday after next. If you've still been meaning to enter, it's crunch time now. You'll definitely want at least a week to for it to send, but you should consult your local post office foremost. Remember though, your odds of winning are very slim unless you happen to live in Japan, so there's not much point in spending a ton of money on top-class expedited postage. If you're still interested in entering, you can check out our original post for the details on entering. And hey, if you want to share, we'd love to see your entries. Coro-Coro Update: Possible X Series/Battle Network Revival?

Protodude has gotten hold of a scan from the latest Coro-Coro, which seems to give some more info about the new Rockman contest in Japan. Heat Man, the site's translator, is in the middle of personal business right now and can't be reached for translation, but Protodude claims that she can make out details about a possible revival of an inactive Mega Man series.
