Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite to Be Revamped, Rebranded, Relaunched?

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has had a pretty rough go of things, facing rough competition from the likes of Dragon Ball FighterZ to receiving a tough reception from those still interested, and even getting the boot when the EVO fighting game tournament came calling. It would be easy to imagine that Marvel and Capcom alike would rather just leave the game to be forgotten and focus on future endeavors, whether together or apart.

But that may not be the case. A rumor has been making the rounds recently, spawned from the depths of Reddit (or maybe somewhere near the top, I’m not really sure), courtesy of a user named DasVergeben. DasVergeben’s track record isn’t too shabby; while correctly calling Simon Belmont and Ridley as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate seems like something people have been doing for a while, coupling that with their leak of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as playable fighters in Injustice 2 shows that this guy must be privy to some information.

With that said, DasVergeben has indicated that there are plans for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite to receive a “massive update,” one that could potentially see the entire thing rebranded as “Marvel vs. Capcom 4.”

They stated the following across two posts:

I should probably mention that when it does get announced, it will be called Marvel vs Capcom 4.

I do not know what that could mean for the game itself and the changes, but it will be a complete re-branding effort to make people forget that MvCI existed. They are rinsing the shame of that away.

No one knows anything substantial. Believe me. I’ve been asking around. All that is known is that an update is real and happening. No one has any details that have leaked out regarding what exactly is happening with it or what all characters it will be adding and ect. yet.

The characters that I and people like Max [YouTuber Maximilian Dood —LBD] have heard (Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Asura, Gill, Lady, and Rashid / Vergil) would be the most locked in logical inclusions to expect though. That is at least until something substantial does come out about it, that is the place to start with when it comes to expectations.

Elsewhere, DasVergeben also notes that the update is still early on in its development, and it’s unlikely anything will be revealed until sometime in 2019. They also added that the one who got the two companies thinking about the game again was none other than former Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite producer Peter “Combofiend” Rosas, who departed Capcom for Marvel in 2017.

Of course, this is all still pure rumor right now. But just the same, a strong selling point that might have worked in Rosas’ favor is Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox, which brings several Marvel characters the company didn’t want to touch, ranging from Wolverine to Dr. Doom, back to the table. This would certainly rectify one issue fans took with the original release.

With that said, if Capcom manages to pull a “Street Fighter V” with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in terms of revamping and rebooting the entry (a move said to be successful for the company), would you be interested in giving it another go?
