Same Name, Different Game: Mega Man 5

As the second half of 2017 has gotten underway, we’re edging ever closer to the 30th anniversary of this site’s namesake. To celebrate, On the Stick has six “Mega Manniversary” videos planned for the coming weeks and months leading up to the big December day, and they’re kicking things off with a “Same Name, Different Game” that looks at two of the most dissimilar games in the franchise to bear identical nomenclatures — well, outside of Japan, at least.

Now that you’ve heard Joe’s take on Mega Man 5 versus Mega Man V (or Mega Man V vs. Mega Man V, if you go by the title screens), which one do you think deserves the edge?

For me, it’s a tough call. While Mega Man 5 is still better than a good half of the Nintendo Entertainment System library, there’s a certain freshness to Mega Man V on the Game Boy that makes it hard to deny — and personally speaking, leaves me wanting a remake with color graphics, if nothing else, especially since the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console has woefully opted to leave all Super Game Boy-enhanced games permanently downgraded.

On a related note, was anyone else confounded way back then by Capcom’s decision to not produce any more Mega Man games for Game Boy between this and Mega Man Xtreme?
