Rockman Day Blowout

Sorry about the lack of updates this week; besides the announcement of Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, it’s been a pretty busy/hectic week for me, but I couldn’t forget about Rockman Day — especially as it happens to fall on the same day as my wedding anniversary (a coincidence, but a happy one), and I’m certainly not about to forget that!

Some of you might be wondering “What is Rockman Day?” and “Shouldn’t this be on December 17th?” Well, just as Star Wars has annexed May 4th each year for the same of a pun as a way to celebrate the franchise, so too has Mega Man — or, more specifically, Rockman.

That’s not me just being some sort of purist or whatever, but the pun itself actually stems from the name “Rockman.” As I explained here a few years ago:

It falls on June 9th because of the Japanese trend of making numbers into words based on sounds. “Roku” is 6 and “ku/kyuu” is 9. Put together they form “rokku” (since rokuku would be a little weird to say). This is why you sometimes see the number 69 crop up in Mega Man games, like on the Support Car license plate, and Mr. Famous’ 69 battles winning streak.

In the past, Capcom has even gone so far as to celebrate the event, but there doesn’t seem to be anything of note this year — perhaps not helped at all by everyone in this business scrambling with pre-E3 and E3 stuff to take care of. For my part, I regrettably don’t have anything particularly special set aside, but I hope you’ll accept these videos I’ve been meaning to share as a sort of celebration.

(Note that some of these might be Not Safe For Work, likely due to language. I normally check each before posting, and while I have watched all of these, I don’t remember which ones do and do not have objectionable content, if any.)

Fox’s Animation Domination High Definition featured this (definitely NSFW) parody of Mega Man a little while back, wherein the powers he gets from his own defeated enemies isn’t enough for him:

Epic Game Music has noticed some similarities between the Prince Sidon theme from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splash Woman’s theme from Mega Man 9, and pays homage to both in this music video:

Speaking of Mega Man 9, Moviebob recently assembled a list of his top ten retro video game revivals, and of course the Blue Bomber had to feature prominently:

Also from Moviebob is his top ten Capcom games — and there’s twice as much blue on this list (three times, if you count Marvel vs. Capcom).

Those Bad Bad Mettaurs are at it again; what high jinks does Ultimate Maverick X have them up to this time?

And finally, though I have a few more I’m holding onto for later, Smooth McGroove’s “Mega Man X – Password Theme Acapella” seems like a good way to close things out.

If you’ve read this far, then thanks, everyone, and I hope your Rockman Day was a good one!
