Rumor: New Marvel vs. Capcom Starting Roster Not Looking So Infinite

The announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite started off with a bang, especially for Mega Man fans, as X was the first character to be shown as a part of the latest inter-company crossover clash, and it carried on fairly well as suspicions were confirmed that arch-rival Sigma would play a part in things from the antagonists’ side.

Unfortunately, that may be as far as the Mega Man side of things goes — at least, until you decide to open your wallet. By way of USgamer, a NeoGAF poster of credible repute by the name of Ryce has revealed what they say is the final roster — at least to start — for the upcoming clash of heroes.

On Capcom’s side, there is Arthur (Ghosts ‘n Goblins), Chris Redfield (Resident Evil), Chun Li (Street Fighter), Dante (Devil May Cry), Firebrand (Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Gargoyle’s Quest), Jedah (Darkstalkers), Monster Hunter, Morrigan Aensland (Darkstalkers), Nemesis (Resident Evil), Ryu (Street Fighter), Nathan “RAD” Spencer (Bionic Commando), Strider Hiryu, and of course, Mega Man X. Ryce notes that the numbers aren’t balanced between the Capcom and Marvel sides, with Capcom in the deficit, and suggests that the missing Capsule Computers rep is “probably someone like Frank West” of Dead Rising fame.

For the Marvel side, they say that we can look forward to the following folks: Ant-Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Gamora (Guardians of the Galaxy), Hawkeye, Hulk, Iron Man, Nova, Rocket/Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy, with the note that “this is how the character was named to me; I’m not sure if it’s just Rocket Raccoon with Groot assists or a redesigned character actually called Rocket/Groot), Spider-Man, Thanos, Thor, and Ultron.

Throw in the missing Capcom character, and that’s 28 overall — less than the starting roster of 36 from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or the whopping 56 featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. We do know that downloadable content characters are coming, with Sigma separated from Ultron being the first announced in the six-character 2017 Character Pass (why Ultron isn’t similarly DLC is anyone’s guess). Ryce would go on to say that Venom would return to the series as DLC as well.

Marvel fans would seem to be hit the hardest, with an absolute lack of any X-Men or Fantastic Four-related characters mentioned so far, including series iron me– er, mainstays Wolverine and Doctor Doom, to say nothing of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 newcomer Deadpool.

As for those hoping to reunite X and Zero on launch day? Well, this list is just a rumor for the time being, but if it holds true, then they may have to pay later. USgamer estimates based on previous character pass pricing that if we’re to assume there will be that many more characters added through DLC, the cost of approaching Marvel vs. Capcom 3‘s launch roster could cost you some $90 USD.

And that’s about the size of it. USgamer adds further thoughts on the big picture, and I encourage you to go check that out, but simply put: What do you think, of either the rumored roster or the prospects of shelling out to get more (I’ll bet I know the answer to that one)?
