Mega Man and Sonic are Coming in the Third Wave of amiibo (Updated)

When Nintendo first announced the upcoming amiibo interactive figures that would be based on several members of the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS roster, one could not help but notice that the likes of third-party characters Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Sonic the Hedgehog were conspicuous by their absence. As a result, the question lingering in everyone’s mind was whether Nintendo could use them as amiibo figures at all.

Well, we now have our answer… for two of them, at least. Fortunately, one of those two is the one we at The Mega Man Network would most naturally be concerned with.

Thanks to a new report from Destructoid, we now have confirmation that the two stars of another big crossover, Archie’s “Worlds Collide” (as well as the upcoming “Worlds Unite”) will be available in a tangible interactive form as Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man will join Shulk in the fourth wave of releases. Currently, these are slated for February in Japan, where they will be preceded by Lucario, Rosalina and Luma, Bowser, Toon Link, Sheik, Ike, Meta Knight, and King Dedede on January 22nd.

As for a North American release? Nothing on that yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Update: Destructoid has since updated their post with the following: All eleven of the new NFC toys will launch in North America in February 2015. The company notes “some of our retail partners will be releasing a certain number of these as exclusive figures, so stay tuned for details.” Gross.

Fortunately, this seems to bode well for the rest of the roster. Seeing as Bandai Namco helped develop the game, it seems Pac-Man is likely only a matter of time. What’s more, if these third-party characters made the cut, it seems likely that anyone else on the roster may be fair game, too, including some choice unlockables we’re not mentioning here for the sake of those avoiding spoilers.

Nintendo recently revealed in their latest Nintendo Direct that several amiibo would be compatible with other games, including Link in Hyrule Warriors and several more in Mario Kart 8. Whether our two true blue heroes will do anything in any title remains to be seen, though at the very least, maybe Mega Man can give our Miis a cool racing outfit in the latter title.

Here are some closer looks at the Mega Man and Sonic amiibo. For the rest, be sure to head on over to Destructoid to have a gander in their gallery.
