Super Mario Crossover Gives Way to the Super Retro Squad

Over the past couple of years, you might have noticed some buzz around a fan game known as Super Mario Crossover, including a few stories on this very site. For those who don’t know, it is a Flash-based game in which a variety of NES video game heroes, including Mega Man, journey through the eight worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom in the original Super Mario Bros.

More recently, the developer of the title, Jay Pavlina, realized that he had more to offer with the game… that is, if not for the fact that he didn’t really own much of the original concept. Thus, the Super Retro Squad was born!

To create the game in a timely manner, however, would require more manpower and more money, which led to a Kickstarter program:

With 23 days to go, they’ve already surpassed their goal, and are nearing double the amount of money they were looking for. Jay offered this update:

In addition to the points made in the above video, he also adds that the game will feature Linux support.

As you might have guessed, the character of “Mecha Boy” (second from the right in the lineup) is based on the Blue Bomber, a “genius scientist who has to become part robot in order to save his life.” Speaking with Jay, we have learned that this version may include some attributes of his other-world contemporaries; that is, he may also share some traits with Mega Man X and even Bass, though they are as of yet undecided on that. In addition, his pose is based on the common stance taken by the blue Maverick Hunter.
