Listen to Heaps of Mega Man Music Get Genesisized

Maybe Genesisized isn’t really a word, but I hardly care. Since late last year, arranger Based Renegade has been undertaking the awesome task of remixing many if not all of the classic Mega Man soundtracks into Genesis style. And as a chiptune lover, I just can’t get enough. It was hard enough to pick a single song for this news post.

You can check out Renegade’s playlists for Mega Man 1 & 2, Mega Man 3 & 4, Mega Man 5 & 6, Meg Man 7, and Mega Man 8 (currently in progress), and I certainly recommend you do. If Archie’s Mega Man and Sonic crossover Worlds Collide had a game soundtrack, it’d probably sound like this!

I LOVE stuff like this: taking songs and rearranging them with different sound chips.

  2. Nicholas says:

Not bad, i’d love to hear all the songs get the SNES treatment.

  3. DaiSanSei says:

Now some Sonic in Mega Man.

  4. Laytruce says:

It’ll be interesting to compare the MM1-3 songs with their Wily Wars rendition.

  5. TuxedoMoroboshi says:

So far, these actually sound even better than the Wily Wars versions, to me. This person is quite talented. o.o

  6. Scott Rempel says:

most genesis re-arrangement are pretty awful, which makes sense, as the genesis sound chip was pretty weak, and therefore hard to work with.

While not all of these are improvements over the originals, quite a few are, or at least on par, which is great.

  7. Desmou says:

There are a few artists on youtube that take the tracks from X4-8 and reduce it to the SNES style – I’ve always loved those.

  8. ZionKraze says:

Personally, I prefered the term, “Megadrived”. Yes it’s a word I made and it sounds alot better then Genesisized. That and Genesisized sounds a bit like Genocide.

  9. I agree, just a few days ago I was listening Gecko Yamori’s versions of Genesis styled Megaman X3 songs. For the most part I tend to like them more as the Genesis has crisper cleaner sound even if the sample rate wasn’t as high.

  10. Nick Perry says:

Does this guy not know 1-3 already came out on the Genesis?

  11. Nick Perry says:

I could not disagree with this more.

The YM2612 is an amazing sound chip. And it in combination with the SN76489 PSG ,does Rock style, and funk style music far better than the 20a3 or the SPC700 IMO. (Many other types of music too)

Not to mention neither of those have ANYTHING on Yuzo Koshiro’s electronic music done for Streets of Rage.

  12. Scott Rempel says:

I agree, the SoR tracks are fantastic. Sadly tracks of that caliber were few and far between on the Genesis, and the sound chip is generally cited as the reason why.

Listening through more of these remixes, I like most, if not all of the NES-era remixes, while the MM7 ones just aren’t as good as their SNES counterparts. Still an amazing job, and true to the goal he set out to do.
