Street Fighter X Mega Man is Here – Get Your Controllers Ready!
Happy 25th anniversary, boys and girls! We are all children again as the retro-chic and absolutely free new Mega Man game is here: Street Fighter X Mega Man! You can head right over to Capcom Unity’s Mega Man hub and download away! No cost, no DRM, just a sweet game to install and enjoy. Hopefully you picked up some kind of joypad (such as the one I got here), but playing on the PC should be fine too. Brett managed after all!
A humongous shout out to Zong Hui for coming up with this, A_Rival for the delicious chiptune soundtrack, and of course, to the folks at Capcom Unity. They promised us something big for the 25th anniversary, and they delivered. Although I’ve only played a single stage so far, I can attest with Brelston: this feels like a legit Mega Man game.
Anyhow, what are you waiting for? Download away and blast some world warriors! Tell your friends, spread the word! Make sure they grab it from Capcom Unity!

About 4 hours before the release, i bought a new non analogue controller, just for this.
I downloaded it, but it won’t let me pick a single stage. I don’t know what’s going on. I just can’t move off of Mega Man.
The download is so slow, it must be getting slammed with tons of Mega Man fans!!
I already play on PC, so I have all the tools like controllers and such. People should download this regardless, for support of the franchise….
Started downloading an hour ago.. almost done. Guess I’ll play it sometime later today.
Does your controller have joysticks? If so use those, it didn’t recognize my d-pad.
Just 1 minute until it’s done now,
I’m really looking forward to kicking off the anniversary with this game though I’d probably recommend the less impatient ones to wait for a bit to get better download speed.
Well, I hadn’t set up controls on the controller yet, it wouldn’t let me bring up the menu to do that. The keyboard wouldn’t let me move at all on the Stage Select either.
…
…
…
Just check and that was the problem, only the Joysticks on the controller would move anything. I still can’t re-do the controls though, which is kind of annoying. I’m sure I can work around it though, lol.
You can readjust the the configuration of the pad and analog through free external programs, (like JoyToKey) for those without manual switches…
Just beat the game.
Stage design was slightly lacking in my opinion, but some of the enemies were well designed and fresh. Loved it!!
I have got problems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vldBAbB9R7U&feature=youtu.be
I have been playing – rather – trying to play the game for hours now and I’ve experienced nothing but frustration.
- First, the game crashes with a StackHash error instantly after I pass through the boss door. I’m running it on Windows 7 64 bit and this error happens every single time, meaning I can’t beat even a single stage.
- Multiple people report slowdowns.
- There’s no obvious way to configure controls.
- The software forces display mode of High Color (16 bit) as opposed to True Color (32 bit) and does not put it back in order. This is unacceptable in 2012.
- Hit recoil is wrong. When you get shot in the back, you still recoil backwards from where you’re looking at which isn’t how it worked in real Mega Man games.
- Vertical hitbox for small energy pellet is as big as for a large pellet.
- Practically every enemy on screen can be killed with just one charged shot which does not bode well for the usability of additional weapons.
- Finally, there are some interesting gimmicks here and there but mostly level design is flat, faulty and quite frankly, too easy. Can’t say anything about bosses as they simply do not load for me.
- People’ve been reporting there’s no save system.
Now I understand this is a free game and controls feel practially perfect outside of the bugs I described, but it doesn’t seem like it was thoroughly tested at all. Unfortunate.
With your regular and muscle memory.
But seriously… you can’t. Don’t know why such a basic feature (that’s been around since MM2) was left out, but oh well. The game is pretty short anyway.
Yeah I’m pretty disappointed by the lack of save. It’s a basic Mega Man feature regardless of if you really need it or not.
I swear to GOD that it doesn’t play like a Mega Man game… to tell you the truth I don’t like it very very much and I’m not pleased about this new game that they just licensed…
Wow! As of a minute ago, nothing was moving at the SFxMM download. I wonder if the game is actually that popular, or if there’s another issue.
I only have one complaint.
Vega :/ So god awefull hard… But the game was pretty fun none the less.
Also heres the boss lineup
Ryu>Chun-Li>C.Viper>Dhalism>Blanka>Rose>Rolento>Urien
When using Rolentos power on Urien, basically just spam it right in front of him as much as possible
Right now, I can’t seem to download it. I can get the screen where it says “choose download region”, then I get the “cannot display the webpage error”.
Guess it’ll be awhile before everyone stops overloading the servers…
Anyone having issues with the analog stick being the only input method
on controllers, download xpadder- the MMX PC ports have the same problem
(despite having configurable controls otherwise) and I’ve “fixed” that
for about a year now. Have yet to download, seeing as Unity’s link
seems to be down, but I’ll be waiting.
Most of the design community use Macs, and won’t be able to play this. Oh well
The trailer ruined the only good parts of the stage designs and the only good to come out of this was the boss fights. Where is Dr. Wily? Why is Megaman the only Megaman character here.
F2 for controller mapping. I had to swap to arrow keys and z/x for jump and shoot. As for your StackHash error, I am running on 7 64-bit with no noticeable issues. I don’t even have the changed color mode – actually, I also hit F4 to swap to windowed mode as opposed to fullscreen, see if that helps.
The controls are set to WASD and Z/X by default.
I guess they’re going way classic on this one. Not even a password feature. Disappointing, but not a major drawback.
Vega’s not that bad, just stay away from him until he lands or just finishes an attack then kick the crap out of him.
Seems to me I am also having problems downloading this as well guess I’ll have to wait till the servers are not being flooded. Also it seems others are having problems just playing the game. I know I don’t have a controller for my laptop so for the sake of just support there you go and Red I think people get it by now. LOL
So what’s up with disqus?
Finally got to downloading this.
For those with controller configuration problems, press F2. The game should allow you to set the button configuration.
After playing for a little bit… it seems OK, but the lack of a save feature bothers me. We had games with save features for over 20 years, and they can’t do it for this one?! Emulators can save, why not this? Heck, I’d be fine with a password system (since the NES/Game Boy/SNES games used those anyway). I forgive MM1 for not having a save, but it’s inexcusable in this one.
Otherwise, I want to wait until I play more of it before judging. But so far, I can’t get that worked up about it. Part of it is the whole no-save thing, but it’s also because this is yet another 8-bit rehash. I was OK with it for MM9 and 10, but by this point, I am, frankly, tired of that sort of thing.
Do not lock your computer and come back. I never could regain the video output on the game and will now have to start all over. I was at Vega. AAAAAAAAAAAA
Just a PSA note about “joytokey”: In the process of downloading the program so I can play the game using a game pad, I got some malware that is bugging up my browser. Point in case, be careful with what you download and have your virus/malware protection ready.
The game is good. It certainly doesn’t have the polish of a classic Megaman game, but it’s about 70% there. I came out expecting… more. I want more. And I’m surprised to give a Mega Man game that type of review.
Blue Bomber? More like the Blue Baller..
What a disappoint. First off, you can’t close the game. It stays open until you shut down your computer. Next, none of the bosses are weak against any of the other weapons. How are you suppose to beat them? Speaking of bosses, they take to much health from you, and barely any way of dodging any of their moves. The bosses feel more like a Street Fighter match, than a Mega man boss. If this is going to be a Megaman game, than make it a Megaman game!! Give us Universe, give us Legend 3, but don’t give us another Street Fighter game and slap Megaman on it to hide anymore excuses they are willing to throw out. Also, the lack of a password system like the past Megaman games ruins the feel off closing the game, and going back where you left off. The controls don’t work right out of box, and it’s hidden in the pause menu for you to find out how to change it. The enemies are unforgivable for the fact that you can’t kill them with hurting yourself so many times. Also, why celebrate two completely different series together? There’s a reason why they were separate to begin with. It’s like celebrating Mario’s and Zelda’s 25th birthday together as a horrible game, instead of having Super Mario All-Stars and Skyward Sword. This just shows that Capcom cares more about Street Fighter than Megaman. They know they can’t rip us off with DLC in a Megaman game. That’s the whole idea of them making every excuse to not make Legends 3 or Universe. I was so excited for Universe, I was even going to get a PlayStation 3 just to play it. But, they ruined it. They want Megaman to die, that’s all what we’re going to get is Street Fighter games that’ll rip us off with DLC. This just hurts to know all of this. I’m serious, who else agrees with me that Capcom doesn’t cares about Megaman anymore and only cares about Street Fighter? I know most of you do.
Win7-64
The true colors component regained for me after exiting
the game, but I do agree that it is unnecessary in the first place. I
also get through to bosses just fine, but the first time the program
just froze up for a while, the problem didn’t repeat itself with the
second run or other bosses again though.
Level design’s nothing special, but the boss fights are the real stars here. More reminiscent of the faster-paced MMX and MMZ bosses than the usual Classic fare, but they work well.
I’m not having any issues. I have a six year old machine with Windows XP Professional SP3 64-bit with 4 GB RAM, and it runs like a dream. I can play it on my keyboard with no issues once I mapped the controls (use F2, it was in the Readme that came it with, no excuse for not knowing how to do it) to something I was familiar with. Second, hitting the ESC key exits the game, so no excuse there. I heard some people say that swapping to windowed mode with F4 stopped the slowdown, for those having trouble with that.
Only beaten Rolento so far. I’ll have to play it later, though I wish we could save. Ah well, not much I can do about that.
As for those complaining that it doesn’t feel like a Mega Man game and that it’s crappy, etc. – good god people, it’s FREE. Stop whining. You don’t HAVE to play it, and it’s not like you lost money.
What do you mean “There’s no obvious way to configure controls.”? I think it’s pretty self-explanatory; on the pause menu, you press F2, and you just press whichever button you want to do each function. It explains this right in the ReadMe. True, you can only do it once in a stage, not from the main menu or stage select, but yeah.

Personally, I really dig it! Is it FLAWLESS? Nah. And it’s definitely awkward trying to play with the keyboard (I know, I’d like to get a controller sometime when I can afford it). But the music’s awesome, it plays pretty solidly, the boss fights are sweet (though Uriel’s “weakness” barely qualifies, and Vega….. oh my LORD!)….. basically? If it were a PAID game, then maybe I’d expect a little more. But for what it is? I think it’s pretty gnarly.
Are you trolling? Every boss has a weakness, and you can press ESC to exit the game.
The bosses are suppose to feel street fighter-y, they’re street fighter characters, this game is about both series.
Fun game, to be sure, but the lack of save feature is inexcusable. And I really wish the boss weaknesses were a little more… useful, as they are in most Mega Man games. As it was I got to the traditional boss rush and quit due to frustration.
Well I finally got the game I enjoy it and it satisfying even if yes there seems to be an abundance of 1UP’s. I am not sure why the game lags though. Any ideas guys? I am no computer expert I play a lot of my games on platforms for the T.V though fixing lag is easy with a game platform. Just not sure why that’s the problem. I am able to get through it none less even this lag does affect me fighting bosses.
Something about the write up of the game on the download page rubs me the wrong way. It sounds bias, written more for Street Fighter than Megaman… Eh, I’m not surprised, Capcom cares way more for Street Fighter than Megaman.
Level design is bad. Some stages are just plain cheap in terms of emeny placement while others are just plain pathetic in terms of difficulty and layout.
Game has a number of programming errors that seem to screw with the general memory and operating system itself. That’s a SERIOUS no.
Hitboxes are all over the place at times.
Special Weapons are practically uesless. Even moreso against bosses as half the time your attacks either require you to pull off some excessively complex or gimmicky aiming manuver, or require you to take more damage than the bosses do.
Multiple bosses remind me of Quickman with how random their attack patterns are.
All in all? In my opinion the game itself isn’t HARD, nor does it punish you for not learning to make use of certain things. It’s just far too annoying as all bloody hell.
