Kotaku Interviews Seow & Svensson on Street Fighter X Mega Man

In case the 40 minutes of gameplay footage wasn’t enough to whet your appetite for Street Fighter X Mega Man before the release on December 17th, Kotaku has posted a new interview with Capcom USA Senior Vice President Christian Svensson and the game’s creator, Seow Zong Hui.

In the interview, Seow sheds some light on his motivations and decisions made in developing the game, as well as some technical and artistic aspects of the development process. Meanwhile, Svensson talks about why they’re releasing the game for free, expectations regarding fans’ cravings and future projects, and proceeds to tease a little about how this is only kicking off their 25th anniversary plans for Mega Man, rather than encompassing it.

  1. WilyNumber13 says:

I believe, since he is from Singapore, “Seow” is the man’s surname, rather than “Hui.”

  2. DarthMagus says:

I hope this article puts to rest some of the anxiety that fans are feeling. Here is proof from the game’s creator himself that Capcom did not “steal” his game and proof that Capcom has a lot in store for the future of Mega Man. All we can do is patiently wait. I, for one am very excited to see what’s coming.

  3. Trigger says:

“…it is not meant to be the cure for all that ails Mega Man fans.” –Svensson

    The man is wise.

I’m anxious to see what they do for Mega Man’s 25th, but as far as I’m concerned, all bets are still off until I have hard evidence that the Blue Bomber is going to live a good while longer (read: more good games). Convince me a little more, Capcom. You have my attention.

  4. Phaelin says:

Huh, I actually believe they mean it when they say more is to come. I am excited to think that Capcom has put its nervousness regarding new games to rest.

  5. WilyNumber13: Someone should probably tell Kotaku as well; if it’s okay, I’d like verification from someone before changing it.

  6. CnCBoy says:

When you think about it this guy got balls.
He came to see Capcom to propose them his game.
And it must be really good because a company would never take ownership (or canonise) a fan game if it wasn’t at the quality level of the franchise.
Troll:They prefer to do sh*t themselve, like X-over.

The timing was convenient too, because of this, the developper will reach a level of fame he would never have reach if it was a simple fan game.

Maybe they will employ him for future game.

    LBD and Wily:

His Google+ page, https://plus.google.com/104833948431822670758/posts, shows him as Zong Hui Seow. Google searches for his name predominantly display his name as Seow Zong Hui.

  8. Phaelin says:

Kotaku is also under the impression that Mega Man characters are being adapted into a fighting game. They are pretty useless as a source of gaming news.

  9. Captain says:

    @Phaelin

Kotaku isn’t exactly known for being well-informed when it comes to video games. Nor are they particular known for high journalistic standards (OMG ORACINRA R REAL?!?!?)

  10. Trigger says:

    @Phaelin & Captain:

Kotaku doesn’t behave like a cohesive journalism unit that double-checks its own facts. Some of the writers are reliable and mostly accurate, and some tend to jump the gun and make too many assumptions (maybe for the sake of sensationalizing, maybe just to be the first to comment, who really knows). In general I find Kotaku useful as a convenient finger on the pulse of gaming, not necessarily as a reliable news source (although it has its fair share of actual, reliable news).

  11. ProtoZero says:

$10 says M. Bison is one of the fianl bosses!

  12. Matt says:

Two games for the MM Anniversary. Even though they’re both 8-bit, it’s still more than I think anyone could have hoped for. Definitely a better Christmas present than Xover.

  13. gutsman004 says:

I believe this is going to be a good Christmas for Mega Man and all his fans.

  14. New Era Outlaw says:

I hate to sound like a broken record here, because I’m sure a few people have said the same, but the only way Capcom can really mend the awkwardness of what they’ve done to the franchise lately is to do one small thing.

Uncancel the Mega Man Legends 3 Project.

Personally, SF x MM looks pretty fun, but I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed when I found out that it’s merely them giving a thumbs up to a game a fan did already. At least there’s some hope when he said that it’s free and it’s not -the- surprise for the 25th anniversary.

  15. Duckaiser says:

@ProtoZero: I was thinking that too, but Seth would be a perfect final boss for this. What with the fact the he COPIES peoples moves, sound like Mega Man, doesn’t it?? Would be an interesting fight, if you ask me.

Anyway, yeah, hopefully this will get people to stop thinking that Capcom stole someone’s game.

  16. New Era Outlaw: Never happening. Not in so many words, anyway. We might get a Mega Man Legends 3, it might even resemble what we saw before in some way, but I think that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project, as we knew it, is well and truly dead.

Duckaiser: That would be cool. He’s blue, too, right? It would be like Mega Man meeting his double from another world.

  17. RedrazerZero says:

Didn’t Rockman have to fight himself already as a mini-boss, and doesn’t Seth types get beat out by 75% of the cast and Seth by Dictator like nothing? He sounds more like a mini-boss…

  18. Bob says:

    Seth can teleport right?

He’ll probably be the Wily Capsule boss if anything.

  19. Green says:

There’s screenshots of Seth’s level so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in there.

  20. some dude says:

It’d be awesome if they have a contest for fans to create a MM game. The best one get’s to have it realized and of course $$$.
