Mega Man X3 Composer Plays Zero/Blizzard Buffalo Medley on Piano

We aren’t sure whether there was any particular reason behind the posting of this video, but Kinuyo Yamashita, composer for Mega Man X3, recently posted a video to YouTube of herself playing a medley of Zero and Blizzard Buffalo’s theme from the game on piano. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip, Omar!

    Nice

    Blizzard Buffalo is one of my favorite themes, especially remixed and this piano rendition is absolutely beautiful

    You’re welcome! Also worth noting is that she composed the music for the first Castlevania game. That’s why some of the music from X3 sounds like Castlevania… haha.

  4. Jhooqe says:

    Cool.

    Apparently she lives in the USA now? In New Jersey? Also cool.

    I loves me some original Castlevania and Power Blade music. Definitely some of the best on the NES.

    But I think X3 is my LEAST favorite of the X’s on the SNES, sound production wise. It’s a little ugly and grating to me. But I really love the arrangements on the PSX version.

    I saw this a few months back. Pretty cool rendition. :D

    I think it has to do with the OC Remix Maverick Rising Album. Album director Wesley Cho (Bahamut) tweeted it to her, and she replied “I really enjoyed it.”

    Aside from the fact that X3 is the 3rd most represented game there (and falls just short of 2nd), a certain track is done thrice [twice on its own and once with one from another game] (the most for any single track?).

    I’m sure you can figure out which track that is.

    ~This would be a nice addition to the sheet archive XD~

    That was really cool, I love when composers do that, they make you see new layers in their music.

  8. Toast says:

    I always loved Buffalo’s theme… always thought it would sound absolutely amazing in a full orchestra arrangement (which I’m surprised nobody’s done yet), but a piano rendition by the track’s own composer is just as stunning. I love this.

  9. STM says:

    Honestly, I blame X3 having terrible sounding music to the way the tracks were voiced. There’s not too much wrong with them melodically (though some would argue a handful are criminally short… Doppler, Sigma.)

    The PS1 version did little to improve the sound problems too. It also didn’t help that X’s charging buster sound resembled the sound a vacuum cleaner makes when powering up.

    If you’ve never heard that comparison before, the next time you play the game it will stick with you forever. Enjoy your Oreck Buster.

    If I’m not mistaken, Yamashita programmed the music into the games. This explains why the SNES music is jarring and that the PSX music is so much more fluid… it was capable of giving her the sound that she wanted. I imagine she was probably upset at the way it sounded on the NES too. It’s like giving a ukulele to a guitar player.

    She also programmed her music for Castlevania. She’s a hellava woman to know how to do all that.

    She actually wasn’t involved with the PS1 version of the game. I remember reading on her Facebook page a while back she said she was a little disappointed with the PS1 arrangements.

    I’m pretty sure Yamashita had nothing to do with the PSX arrangements. In fact… strongly she dislikes them! See for yourself: https://www.facebook.com/notes/kinuyo-yamashita/rockman-x3-mega-man-x3/485641030231

    I honestly agree with her…. The original ost has this great raw sound to it. It’s heavy metal, it’s supposed to sound all harsh and abrasive! Eh, that’s the way I see (hear) it anyway…

    As for this piano piece, I think it’s excellent! I definitely would like to hear her tackle more of her pieces on the piano — Maybe something more obscure like Pocky and Rocky 2 or Ghost Sweeper Mikami… heh!

    @rab

    Wow, two people coming up to correct me? Must be serious! I was not certain of the facts, so I could only assume that she programmed the music like she had done for Castlevania (per wikipedia). Thank you for being upfront about fact-checking.

    @geomon

    Meh, that’s her opinion and that’s fine. But If you ask me, a lot of the SNES version tunes are very much less fitting for an X game compared the PSX versions. She’s just jealous. :P

  15. RedrazerZero says:

    @goemonsama
    Agreed with the SNES’ version sounding better, and for the same reasons. I like Blast Hornet’s theme better on the arranged version, mainly for that very fitting beginning segment…

  16. Duckaiser says:

    Really, really cool!

  17. Lumine1412 says:

    Aside from Iceman, all ice robotmaster/mavericks theme have this melancholy and isolation feels to it
    …feels good man

  18. OrdoRaptus says:

    So am I like, the only one who loved X3′s ost?

  19. TAG says:

    Y’know, I actually prefer the PSX arrangements to the originals on the SNES myself. The actual melodies are fine, but the MMX instruments do NOT lend themselves to such melodies imo. I think the only songs that were better on SNES were Zero’s theme and the Maverick boss theme. I feel the PSX arrangements suit them much better. Of course, this Zero+Buffalo piano arrangement is the best thing to come out the X3 soundtrack. :D
