1UP Explores One of Our Favorite Gaming Mysteries
The cover story featured this week on 1UP is all about Gaming’s Greatest Mysteries, and none other than Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Parish chooses to ponder one which has remained near and dear to many of us over the years: “What Happened Before Mega Man X?”
We’ve all had our theories, and as the article points out, the whole thing may go unanswered– assuming it ever would have been answered– due to the departure of Inafune and other staff key to the series from Capcom. Sure, someone could take the ball and run with it, but then that presents another question: Will fans accept it? As it is, there are even games created under Inafune’s watch which fans disavow, so would someone else filling in the gaps be any more accepted?

Whether people accept it or not, I think it’s a popular enough “gap” that fans of both Classic and X would come rushing to experience (whether it was a story, game, movie, etc)
Well… that was the really interesting part of one of the Rockman Online trailers, where you see that Megaman and X see each other. Canon or not, that was a great moment to me.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The 25th anniversary ultra-mega-super game is THE game. The game that bridges Classic and X, blowing the minds and expectations of every Mega Man fan, player, and detractors, in every single aspect. It would be THE Mega Man experience, complete with almost everything that defines entertainment and video games since the beginning of, well, entertainment.
At least, that’s my vision. Knowing Capcom, all we’ll get are merch, more crappy iOS games, and not even a celebration as good as Street Fighter. We’d be lucky to even half the anniversary for Street Fighter.
Ah Capcom. What have you done to my expectations of you and my beloved franchise?
In my opinion now the fans need to work together to build the story between original and X series :/ We know that Capcom will be doing something like X-Over again, nothing real to be in the Megaman Story
That’s a good question, what happens after the Original series events and before X series… I want to know what happens between the X and Zero series too, but just one dilema per time
Never really thought about the gap between classic and x. I’m more interested in the elf wars that happened prior to the zero saga
To be honest, I think the mystery of what happened between classic and X is best left unsaid. Kindling the imagination of players is a hallmark of all great game series. It keeps the player interested in the game even when they’re not playing it. Answering those questions just quashes the connection to the player. There’s no need to wonder about it anymore, and that kills some of the spirit of the experience.
same as clockmocker! we have some information about the elf war, and it’s really fit for a game! let the mystery for the gap between classic and X and do an awesome final for X, zero in the elf war… but we know that capcom will never do it…
@Clockmocker @Giga-Ganon The ironic part is that we know far, FAR more about what happened between X and Zero than we do between Classic and X.
@Heat Man I can live with or without it, I suppose, but Capcom will probably realize eventually that there is money in the idea. Let’s just hope we don’t wind up with a couple of series between Classic and X as a result.
And while I do appreciate what you say about imagination in games, there comes a point where I prefer facts. I can wonder about why bricks float all day long, but eventually, I have to know if the Princess really IS in another castle.
until inafune decided to come back to megaman or the morons now running the megaman franchise is replaced, whatever megaman games that are coming out is not gonna be good….
Well, since there’s only like 100 years between the series, and since none of the other series mention anything particularly important happening in the gap, maybe nothing very important happens (besides all the classic robots disappearing somehow). I always imagined there was like a huge revolt of humans against Robot-Master-kind, and they wiped them all out. But I don’t know how that could have played out given the time limit and the info we have from the beginning of the X series.
But I guess ANYTHING would fit, given the unrealistic and all-over-the-place stupidity of the Classic/X story line.
@ Jhooqe:
“But I guess ANYTHING would fit, given the unrealistic and all-over-the-place stupidity of the Classic/X story line.”
And that’s also why we like it so damn much.
After years of believing Dr.Light converted Rock to X and watching The Day of Sigma that proved me wrong, I tend to say that neither Rock or anyone of his friends got killed or anything like that.
It’s more like a mixture of RO’s teasers, the X3 cutscene where you can see Auto sitting in a underwater living room and the saying of some people, that Duo brought them to his home planet.
As Classic is a child friendly series, I believe they’re still alive, somewhere.
Alien Virus hits earth. Megaman, Bass and Protoman gets infected. Light unleashes X Prototyp with a new type of anti virus program from Cossack. Wily finishes Zero. Clash between X Prototype und Zero.
roll goes crazy, wears red armor and kills almost everyone. Light is desperate and builds X.
roll changes her name to zero.
@A-Guest: Interesting about the Duo thing. Kind of like a robot Valhalla?
@erikthered: LOL that’s what I thought the first time I played Megaman X4 (my first Megaman X game)
@erikthered
LOL!!
@heatman
That’s pretty much what Japanese gaming is all about imo. Well i guess i can’t say that about all of them since i haven’t played all of them. But i think you’re right despite the fact that it tortures us all.
It amazes me how so many people still support the Zero Cataclysm theory even though it was stated that didn’t happen.
It’s called leaving it alone. The reason Mega works is because these cliffhangers are left up to the persons imagination. Now of course with the PSP this was going to be patched up but, well, that didn’t happen.
I’m fine with keeping the two separate. One series is lighthearted and comedic. The other takes things a bit more seriously. Leave it up to imagination because a game that tried to bridge the gap would most definitely disappoint one or both fan bases, not to mention it would ruin the mystery.
I’d like it a bit better if they left it ambigiuos. It’s not a plot hole or anything.
X can’t be Mega Man, their personalities match only slightly in the first place. And X has 0 memories about Light until finding the capsules.
I think Capcom should make a game based on this.
@SketchMan3
Sort of, altought it doesn’t has to be a world completely ruled by humanoids.
@HeatPhoenix
Now, according to ‘The Day of Sigma’ X remembers Dr.Light when Sigma was about to kill him in the rocket base.
Sure, it’s to debate if we count MHX instead of the original X1, however, MegaMan X doesn’t seemed to entirely forget about his doctor.
@A-Guest
Dun matta. Word of God says they’re completely different, separate characters.
@RandyPandy: MTE.
@rnn
Don’t worry, I’m aware of that
However, even the doc called him MegaMan X in ‘The Day of Sigma’, so it’s not wrong either.
@Bean: Agreed, I think Capcom has traditionally seen it the same way, or Inafune at least. Mega Man is just too “mascot-y” compared to his successors.
@HeatPhoenix: They could be the same in some way, but it would only be in such a superficial, arguably sentimental way as to otherwise make it meaningless. Suffice to say, I wouldn’t bet on it, much as I thought so when I was a kid.
(Then again, when I was a kid, X had no personality, and an idea like this was fairly new.)
I’m on the boat that says don’t go there. It’s whole-heartedly not worth spoiling what happens during the transitional era. Beside which, despite word of god, I’m STILL not convinced that they’re part of the same universe. You’d think by 21XX that there would be a big chunk of history on the Wily Wars that everyone on earth should be aware of. I mean 10+ games of that madman terrorizing the world can’t just go away after a century! Unless records of the time were erased, which I can’t fathom for any reason, the only other explanation is that the people of the Megaman universe are either really ignorant or really, really, REALLY stupid… which I don’t doubt sometimes, I look at the real world and see the same thing being all too true.
Bottom line: Do-not want!
@erikthered
That’s impossible since… Rock>>all the time>>Roll, she can call herself god for all that matters (even if she pretty much does by calling herself Zero).
