A Couple New Rockman Xover Details (Updated Artwork, Images, Details)

Well, it’s about time we looked back at this, no? I’m not certain of the source (perhaps Famitsu), but fan blog COCOROG is detailing some new facts on the iOS social RPG Rockman Xover (crossover).

First and foremost is the revelation of the protagonist’s name: OVER-1 (over one). Have to admit, Light and Cossack have really slipped in naming their creations these days. Then again, OVER-1 is supposed to be a mass production model, so perhaps it has little use as a personal name.

Other than that, it appears players will use “Battle Chips” to customize their own OVER-1s. Despite the name, it’s thought that these Battle Chips don’t have any connection to the Battle Network series (and instead pertain to the usage of “Battle Memory” mentioned on the official site’s dossier).

UPDATE: With the added Famitsu scan, we’ve come to learn some additional details. First, the game will indeed be free to play, but will charge money for items and such (although that doesn’t mean paying money is the only way to get items, as is the case for many games like this). The game’s stages, called quests, appear to be modeled after tradition side scrolling gameplay, but there is still no information specifically about controls. Finally, it appears you will be able to summon your friends’ own unique OVER-1 characters into battle, as demonstrated in the D-REX fight screen.

UPDATE 2: Here’s a previously never-seen screen grab from Famitsu. It seems to show a boss battle with one other OVER-1 character, complete with different palette. Also added is the official artwork for OVER-1.

We’ll keep an eye on this and see if we can’t find any other bits of data. You can also check our previous story for other details.

Thanks for the tip, Reploid 21XX!

  1. HeatPhoenix says:

    Isn’t this pretty much also the plot to Rockman Online (or wasn’t, I should say) but instead we had copy-robots that actually changed form also hunting mavericks?

  2. Halcreix says:

    So, the story is about an army of generic “megamen”, people get theirs and customize it with chips as they like to finally send it to battle?

    Rather than Battle Network, this one sounds a lot more like Pokemon to me. It’ll be no surprise if Capcom announces later that you can’t equip more than 4 battle chips at the same time on your “Megamon”…

  3. RADIX says:

    “OVER-1″? Yeah, I think I’ll keep calling him “Luka”…

    I hope some larger scans come in soon.

  4. Grid Man says:

    Sigh…These days I can’t even be negative. I like reading news about this game. Somewhere deep down, the fanboy inside me has always wanted an official game that ties all the games into one. This isn’t exactly as epic as the one in my head, but still. I appreciate the slice of effort. At the very least it opens a few more doors for awesome potential, which has always been half the appeal of Mega Man.

  5. Professor Icepick says:

    Gee, in spite of claiming that MegaMan’s not dead, Capcom sure does seem to use the word “over” when describing it.

  6. Gileum says:

    @Radix

    Where did you get the name Luka from? Was there some sort of hint that was his name anywhere? Just curious cuz it does sound better IMO

  7. erikthered says:

    I’m assuming by RPG, they mean like your typical JRPG, turn based and such? essentially, Mega man the MMXO-MMO…

    So… essentially, this pleases 2 factions of the fans… the ones that like battle network maybe (though from the screens we’ve seen, I don’t think it’ll be as fast paced as battle network was) and the fans who want to see different series in genres other than their own respective ones…

    A mega man crossover game is a nice idea… but crossing over all of the series, including alternate timeline ones… well, that just leaves no way to please the fans.

    the 7 series being represented represent themselves 3 different genres: shooter/platformer, action/strategy, and rpg/adventure. most emphasis put on the latter part of each hybrid. jump and shoot, plan and shoot, or run in circles and shoot essentially.

    And not all fans of one series is a fan of all the others, so you have some people who want to jump and shoot, some who want to plan, teleport around and shoot, and some who want to hold left and R and the shoot button, taking breaks for exposition. When you give people a spinoff like this, it will get everyone’s attention, but already, it seems like it won’t appeal to the jump and runners, especially considering the platform it’s on, so they’re alienating hardcore fans of 4 of the 7 series.

  8. ProtoZero says:

    Am I the ONLY one EXCITED for this game I mean come on guys we’re turning into the sonic fan base!

  9. RADIX says:

    @Gileum: No hints; it was a name I found on “Behind the Name” (a Russian one, since he’s half-Cossack and there aren’t many Cossack ‘bots–though I was told that “Luka” is rather outdated). Since he was a mass-produced model, he didn’t seem like much of a character (by MM standards) to me, so I figured that it wouldn’t matter what I called him.

    And honestly…with what Professor Icepick said in mind, I kinda hope more people refer to OVER-1 as “Luka”, or any name that doesn’t bring to mind the end of the series. :/

  10. RCase says:

    has any one else noticed that the more info Capcom gives about their games these days just seems to make their games seem lamer?

    well any ways at this rate i think im gonna have to add a pillow to my desk for when they finally show gameplay and i bang my head on my desk.

  11. RADIX says:

    @ProtoZero: Be excited for this game if you want, but we’re allowed to not be.

  12. Byte Man says:

    @ProtoZero At least the Sonic Fanbase got Sonic Generations, we get Mega Man FarmVille. Probably even have to spam your friend’s Facebook walls to get battle chips. I want a REAL Mega Man game. Pass.

  13. Sammy says:

    I’m still gunna call him Xover. =\ At least the 1st one…

    … Would be cool if we were allowed to name the mass produced models we got.

  14. Heat Man says:

    I did kind of get used to calling him Xover (pronounced with a Z). Seemed to suit his… fashion sense, somehow.

    I’ll see if I can grab Famitsu later today, although I’m not even sure if the info comes from that magazine.

  15. HF says:

    At least they’re doing something; anything to get people talking about a series to keep the idea and concept alive.

    And it’s working.

  16. Bob says:

    @RCase

    You could probably make a more industry wide accusation of that sort.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if OVER ended up being some silly acronym.

  17. rockman says:

    At least we know now that the game will have customization, I was expecting something with less deep to be honest.

  18. I’m going to miss calling him Xover, too.

    OVER-1… lucky for me I like GoBots (even if not the cartoon so much).

  19. tornado man says:

    This is kind da depressing. I hope they announce that this is a little side project of the same game that is much bigger in scale. Something single player on consoles. One can dream, right? Oh well at least there are some sweet comics and action figures right around the corner.

  20. awsomemegaman says:

    let’s not start saying any thing about this game until its released or capcom might put this in the list ofmegaman games that never happened

  21. awsomemegaman says:

    @PROTOZERO,
    NOOO NOT LIKE THOSE “BLUE BLUR” FANS! :(
    they don’t know about how awesome the “BLUE BOMBER” is

  22. Sckarton says:

    so they cancelled mega man universe, mega man legends 3 and rockman online for this? i’ll go back doing my 12th mega man marathon until i hear something positive news for mega man for once.

  23. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    @awesomemegaman

    LOL really dude?

    Anyways thats my comment I just realistically can’t go and say that this in the long run it might fail or it will succeed so I am gonna wait to see videos watch them and make my decision off that because obviously I am not gonna buy a phone to play this and then bam my ultimatium of judgement and there. Done call me ignorant if you want ,but thats how it will be for me. Peace all you happy people! :3

  24. Jose says:

    Mega Man has been dead now. Thanks a lot CAPCOM for giving us this garbage.

  25. Bob says:

    Well regarding the update with the image D-REX isn’t good. For a game that’s supposedly a crossover of all the franchises all we’ve seen thus far is Mega Man X1 and some Mets from Mega Man 7.

  26. Omar says:

    I like his design. Does anyone else notice that he also has those kip things that Volnutt had in one of his rejected designs?

    http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/File:MML3VolnuttE.png

  27. Omar says:

    *HIP things… I can’t type tonight.

  28. Duckaiser says:

    “Vegeta! What does the scouter say about his name?”
    “it’s OVER-1!!!!” *crushes scouter*

    (SOMEBODY had to do it)

    Anyway, these blurry screenshots look better than the initial ones we saw…funny.

    Nice to see full art of Xover, I mean, OVER-1.
    It IS funny how we’ve only seen Classic and X stuff. You know, to match, most other series need NEW and ORIGINAL sprites…which…I’m not expecting to see any time soon.

  29. luigiman1928 says:

    Over-1? Thats 2. I win.

    And I don’t think it’s been mentioned, But that Fur on X’s “armor”, make him look like a Pimp.

  30. AdventZ says:

    @luigiman1928: You mean Over-1′s armor. Not X.

  31. Francis says:

    Still love the design, still hate everything else.

  32. HF says:

    With the looks of it so far, the only one saving grace I can imagine would be giving the game an incredible soundtrack at least on par with the early era of the X Series.

  33. Sckarton says:

    am I imagining or this boss fight has a skip button? good god, since its announcement, it had 5 problems from get-go. I don’t want more than it already has.

  34. HeatPhoenix says:

    At least OVER-1 looks cool.

  35. RADIX says:

    If Capcom wants to hype this as an amazing all-series crossover or something, why is there a noticeable lack of almost anything but X?

    Don’t tell me that the only “crossover” elements are “talking to the Megamen that get saved”.

  36. Okami Delta says:

    So Over 1 is going to be a turn based game, interesting but I really disagree on the designated phoe, it should have been on a portable game console.

  37. Gaia says:

    @RCase:

    I’ve seen much more effort put into Kingdom Hearts 3D’s scans, only to hear that it turned out to be disappointing.

    Mega Man could be one of those series that needs a desperate reboot (The Final Fantasy plot got too ridiculous after the milking of FFVII and Kingdom Hearts, respectively) as NOT EVEN THE IVALICE ALLIANCE series wasn’t safe from overuse of incomprehensible logic.. Urgh.

  38. RandyPandy says:

    It’s probably too much effort for Capcom nowadays to bother making new sprites. It’s much easier to use old sprites and actual edits. I’ll be surprised if I see Classic/X styled stuff from Zero, ZX, Legends, BN, and SF.

    I miss the days when I could actually look forward to a new, fresh game. The concept for this is interesting, but the execution seems poor thus far.

  39. Matt says:

    Mega Man Luka? Hmm, I can dig it.

  40. Okami Delta says:

    Sorry for bad typing I was typing really fast, I meant that this Megaman video game should be on a console and not on a iPhone, what do you guys think?

  41. SolarMan says:

    Megaman Casshern?

  42. @Protozero I agree We’re turning into the denial,deranged,disillusioned,delusional Sonic Fanbase like AKnotholeResident,Guptill89,KingsmasterReview,Chris Chan and MichaelDragon800. Why bitched over a Social RPG game for the iPad? That’ll be like WWE fans bitched at THQ for WWE ’13 just because Layla wasn’t in it.

  43. Raycon says:

    @ProtoZero

    That comparison seems completely asinine to me. The fanbases are in completely different situations, so trying to compare them at all is foolish in my mind.

    @Daniel Delgado
    Do you really fail to see any validity in the fears/complaints/etc. that is being voiced by some people?

    If so I think you need to take a look at the situation and the problems with this game that people are voicing simply based on the information we have, and try to better understand where they are coming from.

    It’s really not hard to understand, as much as some people would like to make it out to be.

  44. Okami Delta says:

    @Proto Zero

    Moral to that statement, never compare two separate fanbases when they have complete differences

  45. Nova says:

    @ProtoZero
    Trust me, I’ve been a Sonic fan. They have this little “cycle” they go through, the Sonic Cycle. Basically, when a game is announced, EVERYONE gets excited and states that it will be the one to revive the series, and then the game comes out and it’s crap, and everyone, except for the most obnoxious of optimists, complains in one way or another.
    So pretty please don’t compare this beautiful group of beautiful, gorgeous fans to the crappile that is the Sonic Fanbase…. There’s a reason why I left that for this fanbase.
    Lol. Ranting is done. I’m gpnna miss calling him Xover. This game kinda seems like a bit of a clusterchuck, doesn’t it…?
