1UP Examines the Mega Man Community
This week’s cover story over at 1UP is about “Community in Games,” and kicking things off is a feature by Nadia Oxford which focuses on the Mega Man community, noting that the Blue Bomber has “fallen on hard times, but that’s only brought the remnants of the community closer together.”
“Mega Man: A Community with Blues” looks back to the humble beginnings of our online fandom and stretches into the modern day, when fans everywhere are all wondering the same thing: What’s next? Click and read to see what some of the early pioneers of online Mega Man fansites as well as more modern figureheads have to say about the current state of affairs, plus some words from Capcom Unity’s Brett Elston about where things are going.

Mr. Elston has actually given me hope.
This was a nice article. Definitely gives a bit of hope for December.
Nice article.
The MM community really needs to stick together.
We must not lose hope.
Nice article. And we have patiance? Well that is true I can agree with that just never seemed that way at times. especailly in this uncertainity of a time ,but hell we made it this far then might as well continue proving that as one of the correct things about us is we are pataint and hopeful even creative and willing to go far as a fanbase with the many fangames, the tribute bands, artists, writers and the whole kit and kaboodle is alive and well.
That was a nice article. Gives me hope for the Mega Man name. Though in all honesty (and I know I sound like a broken record here, but what I’m gonna say is so true, I need to say it again), the reinstatement of MML3 would be one of the best 25th anniversary actions Capcom can do right now. It’d boost up their PR from its current hell-like state with Capcom fans, and the fans get what they want. Win-win.
The quote about Capcom deeming Legends 3 not up to standards and then deeming the slipshod X iOS acceptable made me want to applaud.
Touching article.
Gotta admit, it’s a little tough being a fan these days, but I remain a fan regardless.
Mega Man. The Awesome Franchise. No matter what happens.
Of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ManWhoLovesRockmanMusic: Well, when I said “patient,” I guess I was referring to us old-timers who remember the lapse between X4 and X5. Granted, things still felt less grim back then.
@Omar The guy on Capcom-Unity stream have said over and over that something is cooking.
Good article and I’m happy that they mentioned TMMHP, fantastic site.
@rockman
Yeah, but I am also ‘cautiously optimistic.’ My heart has been broken, after all.
I’ll tell you what. I will shut my ged dern mouth forever if MML3 comes out and if it is good. I will shut it hard if CAPCOM redeems themselves.
@Red Draco
Well I am old timer myself I just like using that as a way to describe things now as in there is patiance among the fans that wait and those doing things the way they can by sharing their talents. I was born at the dawn of the 90′s so I am aware of what you are talking about granted I was waiting for Legends 2 in 2000.
Less grim because that was when capcom was a better company and there were awesome producers still present. I know I come off as new ,but I have been playing megaman games for a very long time like right after watching the ruby and spears cartoon. Thats where my love for this series of anything megaman began. And when I learned of the games I hopped along granted late with some series and on time with others. Believe it or not I missed out the X series and my first X game was MMX5 thankfully I was able to find the earlier games and got to play them. Then I found out MMX2 was my favorite of the X series of games.
Yeah thats a little history on myself with megaman. I may not be consider a full old timer ,but I was around for a great portion of it.
Sorry! Didn’t mean to insinuate that you haven’t been around for a long time, too.
Though I still have a few years on you age-wise, so I’m still old, heh heh.
@Red Draco
The X4-X5 lapse (or what I call the Dark Ages from ~1997 to 2000) is what I keep referring to whenever people tell me that Mega Man is dead. It happened before, and it will probably happen again, but it doesn’t mean that everything is over for good!
Almost all of the early Mega Man fansites died during the last lapse, and we’ve lost quite a few in this new waiting period. The series should bounce back in due time, in some form or another, even if it means losing many of the older fans while picking up a whole new generation. The rush of Battle Network kids in 2001~2004 was hilarious at times.
Nice article, by the way!
@Red Draco
no worries bra,
@Munchy – Thanks! That’s something I”ve been wondering for ages. XD
I really hope Brett’s right. I really hope “I’m an idiot for having expectations” doesn’t become memetic around here for the wrong reasons.
This article left me with a warm feeling and some hope. Even in the grimmest of times, I will always be proud to say I am a fan of Mega Man.
“Mega Man fans are a pretty patient lot”
Say that to those who keep saying “Megaman is dead”
Hm, i say Megaman is dead for capcom. Capcom themself said that Megaman is no longer a lucrative franchise. I’m a big fan of the Blue Bomber and his Spin Off’s, but what should we think?
Capcom chanceld two Games, Capcom spits in our faces when they released the Fat Guy from the Megaman 1 Cover in Street Fighter x Tekken and so they showed us the middlefinger. Then there was the IOs Version of Megaman X and now XOver. No one of these two are accepted from the fans, even while XOver is not out yet. But the problem is, Apps are for quick cash. So, Capcom melks the death cow for the last milk.
The only thing that seems a shimmer of hope is Project X Zone for the 3DS. But i’m sure that this game will not fit in the official timeline or will give us what we wanted. It will maybe a fun game, but nothing we waited for.
The 25th anniversary will be a hard one for Megaman. There are two ways, A) Capcom makes the 25th anniversary the burial of the Blue Bomber or B) Capcom surprises us against all odds and makes the 25th anniversary a boom. We must wait, but it seems (not only for Capcom) that the Blue Bomber is dead. What should a fan think when he looks back on all the memories and then looking in the future and found nothing left what maked that franchise so great?
I can understand both sides.
