New Mega Man Game “Rockman X (Cross) Over” Announced for iOS (Update: Confirmed for Western Release)

Well, to all of you who have been wondering about what’s next for Mega Man games, here is perhaps the answer. Capcom has announced “Rockman Xover” (cross over), a social RPG, for iOS 4.0 and above. Few details are available so far, but the game promises to being together the heroes and villains across each Mega Man series. The story goes as follows:

It’s a world where all the worlds of Rockman have crossed over. The gulf of space-time has been closed thanks to the efforts of Dr. Wily, Sigma and other villains to Rockman and co.! Dr Light and Dr. Cossack work together in creating a new robot to oppose this crisis. A production model, this robot uses “battle memory” that has been scattered over the world, and possesses infinite potential to transform and increase his power. The player battles evil as this new type robot. Create your own Rockman, and battle with others to protect peace!

To speak on iOS compatibility, it will run on iPhone 3GS/4/4S, and iPod Touch models beyond generation 3. It is playable on iPad, but the game is not designed for the iPad’s resolution (probably meaning it will be pixelated on the iPad, like Mega Man X originally was).

The game will release in Japan Autumn of this year. Other details, such as the price and how the game plays, are yet to be heard. We’ll keep you posted!

UPDATE: We reached out for word from Capcom, and although a lot of the crew is currently visiting the land of chocolate, Brelston was able to get back to me and confirm that Rockman Xover is indeed planned to release in North America and Europe. The specific date and other details are coming down the road.

While I’m editing, I also want to take a moment to mention that, yeah, I’m sure this isn’t the Mega Man title a lot of you were hoping for, but I think it’s wrong to have such a charged reaction over it while so little is known. I’m not going to offer hope that it will turn out to be some amazing thing – it’s a social app for mobile devices. Its purpose is to be a simply made game, and I think it’s safe to say it’s not meant to satisfy the appetite of hardcore Mega Man fans. Nevertheless, try to reserve your judgment for when we know more, and don’t assume that this is the end all be all of Mega Man now.

^With this sentiment, I agree. I await the day that Mega Man returns to gaming.

@The Volkswagen Reploid: Your posts could be summed up as “Look at how much better I am than you!”

    Shut up. Please.

    @MegaSeveN
I’m not that hung up on taking things literal, I fully understood what Treleus was going for, and I don’t think it was a conversation. It was specifically a joke (if I have to explain how I know that, I will be sad..). Read this carefully, it has to do with the fact that its a direct contradiction. I think its people who are hug up on the direct subject matter. If I said that’s his skin, then someones else decided to call it armor OK, you see they don’t conflict. Let’s say Capcom made a game where X has a DLC costume where he is actually wearing tights, then what are you gonna do, sit there specifying what your talking about? I’m sure if you didn’t it’d cause confusion…

    android pls

  5. Bryan says:

THIS is what CAPCOM opted for?! Not Rockman Online…not Megaman Legends 3….but –THIS–?!!? Words escape me.

  6. Alex Erdellan says:

If Megaman doesn’t get a real game for his 25th, I think I’m gonna cry (literally) . I may be a 6 foot, 200 something lb, weight lifting enthusiast, but I’ve been listening to MM soundtracks on youtube all day for the past few days, and it really reminds me how large a part of my youth Megaman was. I played the entire Zero series, Legends series, 4 out of 6 Battle Networks, both ZX games, entire Star Force series, most of X, and powered up from the time I was 5- 16 (18 now, but nothing has come out). It really makes me sad to know that the series pretty much stopped. The ps3 and xbox 360 are nearing their end, and there hasn’t even been 1 true next gen Megaman. Capcom really needs to start appreciating it’s fans more, cause Megaman is the only series I care so much about. At least give Keiji Inafune the rights to the series.

  7. @The Volkswagen Reploid: Because putting in a pacifist lawyer that doesn’t fight into a fighting game makes a LOT more sense than putting in a super FIGHTING robot, right? Nothing against Phoenix Wright (I love Ace Attorney), but his presence in the game tears apart your argument.

Furthermore, there’s other characters in the Ace Attorney games that they could have added that would have far more sense than Phoenix Wright, but they chose him. Why? Because he’s the main character of his series. That’s a no-brainer. But then, why not extend that same favor to Mega Man?

You do realize that even people outside of the fandom were scratching their heads over Mega Man being absent from MvC3, right?

  8. While I like the concept, Capcom seems not to have gotten the memo that Mega Man X for the ioS was a worthless POS, and that recycling the concept for this game is only to to earn ire a lot more.

    Those graphics look terrible.

  9. True Gamer says:

I cant belive you guys arent rioting or something. This is a freaking insult to our dear blue bomber. Im freaking angry as heck!

  10. Rider HQ says:

So this new ‘bot’s like a Mega Man version of Kamen Rider Decade. Nice.

  11. Grid Man says:

I know it’s not a “real” game, but I really don’t find it a federal offense for them to make an iOS game. It’s kind of a neat concept that we still don’t know much about. Just give it a while to develop before you bash it.

Besides, maybe Capcom’s trying to see if there’s even a strong enough fanbase for them to cater to. If we trash every little thing they release, can we really expect them to release a big one?

(Not that I’m blindly supporting it. If it ends up being crappy that really sucks.)

  12. Axl-fox says:

@Grid Man: as if all the mess that MML fans caused was not enough, I think that f Capcom were really trying to see if we still “care”, iOS would be the last of their choices, since as you can see not everyone here owns an Iphone/Ipad/whatever.

  13. Advent-Axl says:

This game will DEFINITELY not get my money, if they want an RPG, make another Command Mission.

This game is for tools that condone Capcom’s behavior towards Megaman fans.

If this is a real game to someone they are not a gamer, they are better off sticking with Angry Birds. (Nothing wrong with that, it’s more of a mobile SOCIAL game than Megaman)

  14. Grid Man: It’s not a federal offense to make an iOS game, or a half-assed one, at that. But they’re passing off that half-assed iOS game as the game that celebrates the 25th anniversary. That Capcom doesn’t have enough faith in the series to make a game that claims to carry such a significant importance actually something more than a low-budget cash-in is what people are upset about (or at least most of them).

  15. LanceHeart says:

@Clown Prince of Crime (can I just call you Joker?)

Nowhere in this press release does it state that this is the official 25th Anniversary game or that it’s even part of the 25th Anniversary releases. People have grossly overreacted to this announcement and have projected a lot of misconceptions when all we know at this point is that it’s a social game for iOS.

I also find it funny that we’re six pages into the comments and not a single person noticed the editing error in the article itself. I’m even leaving it in until someone figures it out.

  16. Graph says:

This looks awful on som many levels, like so many iOS / Android games. Omg.

  17. Brandon says:

All I’m going to say is that I don’t believe in or support the mobile and/or social gaming phenomenon that’s happening right now. I do understand that developing games to the triple A standards of modern consoles is an expensive and risky business, but there has got to be a better middle ground than mobile devices.

I really believe that if people weren’t expected to pay “full price” for a game, today’s standard being the $59.99 price point, people would be more accepting of something that wasn’t the next blockbuster title. If they were to make a new Mega Man title on a budget (and let’s be honest, it could be done. The formula is simple.) and release at a more modest price of $39 I think it would sell, and people would like what they got.

First and foremost people’s opinion of something tends to start with the out of pocket expense. There’s no other logical reason for the cancerous plague of gaming that is Angry Birds…

If it’s an iOS title, then I simply don’t care. If that’s me getting old and left behind, then so be it. Gaming isn’t moving in the right direction anyways.

  18. Enzan Chaud says:

Even though I”m okay with the iOS, there’s nothing adult about playing cellphone games, Volkswagen Reploid. Everyone know microtransactions are made exploitable and geared towards unskilled kids.

  19. Mr.Derp says:

The whole “Let’s just mishmash the whole franchise” together thing? Ok, fine. I’m not bothered by the cliche.

It’s Mega Man’s 25th and this is what they shovel out there? Anyone who is offended and angry about this game is completely justified. Yes, a main console release to the 3DS or something is risky, but tracing over MMX sprites? They want support for this? Rom-hackers make better work than them now, we’re officially in Sonic territory.

And when did this site’s staff become a bunch of shills? “Let’s see what happens!”? Really?

(PS: Anyone who buys “Let’s release the same Mega Man tunes on CD yet again!” album #223 is a honking moron)

  20. Derp: I don’t see 12/17/12 on the calendar yet, do you? If they haven’t done anything by then– four months away, mind– then we’ll worry about the end of the world for the next four days before the world actually ends. =P

Besides, Capcom said that they were working Street Fighter first, then shifting to Mega Man. That’s their word; we’ll see if they stick to it.

  21. Alantor says:

    @LBD “Nytetrayn

Oh god… Not this 2012 end of the world crap…. Honestly, those who believed the world will end in December 21 2012 are idiots! This whole the world will end 2012 thing is started by some crazy idiots! Nasa said that the world won’t end this year. I can’t believe there are those who believed the world will end in 2012 in the MegaMan Network… >_>

  22. The Volkswagen Reploid says:

    @Clown Prince of Crime
Pheonix Wright is in that game to advertise Ace Attorney, as it is one of CAPCOMS Franchises. You already got Zero. Zero is fun and you got a Megaman skin. Are you all really THAT gay for megaman that his face has to be on everything

I understand why all of you are outraged, but every time CAPCOM releases a megaman game, you are judgemental, thinking this is the next big megaman project.

Let me make this simple for you. its an iOS game. For example, Assassins Creed are great console games. Sure, they have half assed NDS ports, but they still continue with their amazing mainstream console games. its the same for megaman. You guys need to patiently wait for what they are planning.

it could be a years wait, but the game will come. and the saddest part is, even if we got Megaman X9, some of you would probably still complain. you guys need to look past whats presented to you, without overthinking it. think positive!

  23. Thunder says:

Hey, cheer up, I could bet a cent this game is going to be WINNER.
I think it might be some sort of Farmvillish (LOSER) piece of WINNER, though. There is a level and an energy bar, plus the game itself looks really easy and direct. Maybe you’ll get limited shots and dashes and stuff. There’s even an autoplay option.

  24. Thunder says:

This would also explain why it seems to be possible to skip boss battles.

  25. Alantor says:

    @Clown Prince of Crime

Amen brother. And besides, this whole end of the world crap has gotten a bit out of hand here in TMMN and Rockman Corner.

We need to think positive and not bitch, bitch, bitch and more bitch. Geez, I’m glad CPOC is part of the civizaized MegaMan fanbase side.

Seriously, I thought everyone has gotten over Legends 3′s cancelzation, but they’re still bitching about Capcom killing MegaMan, Jesus….

  26. Alantor: …I was being facetious (hence the “=P”). It was hard to resist, given the 25th anniversary and the “end of the world” are a mere five days apart.

I’ve read enough odds and ends that have left me rather skeptical of the whole thing, I assure you.

  27. Alantor says:

    @LBD Nyterayn

Oh… Sorry about that, mate. =P

  28. gutsman004 says:

While it is nice that a Mega Man game of some sort is coming out,it is disappointing that it’s not for the 360,PS3, or the upcoming WiiU. With that said,I will be buying this when it comes out. I bought Mega Man 2 and MMX,so this definitely will be next.

And it’s not like it will be a bank account breaker anyway, even if the game is beyond awful.Better than buying some $60 game at a retail store only to realize you just bought a $60 turd.

Anyway, back to the topic,it just seems that Capcom wants to resurrect Mega Man,but they have no idea how to go about it. Not only that, but they seem to not have any faith that any Mega Man game they make will do well.

All they need to do is bring together a lot of young creative talent with a lot of ambition to re-envision Mega Man and revitalize the franchise. Much easier said than done, but it can be done.

And to everyone saying Mega Man is dead, not so fast. He’s hit a roadblock like many other franchises have,so until I see some official statement from Capcom saying that they will no longer be making any more Mega Man games,I will continue to hold out hope that we will indeed see the type of Mega Man game that (most) everyone wants to see.

  29. Alantor: ‘S all good.

  30. Reiko says:

They bring this to the West, but not that Project X game? Seriously, what the actual f*ck, Capcom? Why don’t you listen to your fans? Jesus Christ. smh.

  31. oliver says:

Reiko, Capcom isn’t developing Project X and it hasn’t been released in Japan yet. Who says it’s not getting a Western release?

  32. OmegaMan says:

I’m offended by the people who think we should not be offended by Capcom’s treatment of the fanbase. Yeah, I may have gotten over Legends 3 a little, but it’s hard to forgive them when they not only did they go back on their promise to assess the fanbase through the demo/prologue, but they actually -completed- the prologue and went back on their promise to release it. Mega Man Legends 3 looked like it had some serious thought put into it. And the graphics were nice and the action looked fun.

But to have Legends 3 canceled and teasing us with Rockman Online, which may or may not still be in development (with an unlikely localization plan anyway), and then -this- is what they show us?

Now, I admit that perhaps it’s too early to judge this particular game from only 3 screenshots. But let’s be honest here. These are lazy edits of Mega Man X in the shots. I could make better sprites than this. There’s -no- level design whatsoever; just a flat area with tons of enemies. The sprites themselves have inconsistent quality. And it’s for a mobile phone system that is currently going out of vogue.

Now the concept is nice. The actual promotional art is nice. Hell, I -like- the new Mega Man design. But unless these are some really, REALLY early Beta images that will later be improved, then frankly, we -should- be worried. The anniversary is only 4 months away. That’s not much time to develop an extraordinary game.

So here’s to hoping that they’ll improve the engine and graphics. And maybe consider additional platforms before it’s over.

  33. Platitude says:

The promotional art looks really nice, but those screenshots leave a lot to be desired. Someone needs to tell Capcom that re-hashed SNES sprites and plain backgrounds don’t do much to sell this thing to the fans. The last time I got excited about any new MM release was Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up and that was like, what, 5 years ago? Whats happened to our beloved franchise?

Of course, there’s a fair chance I might get it anyways, just because I’m a sucker like that. (Same reason I will see all the Star Wars in 3D again.)
