Mega Man Legends is Hayao Miyazaki

…along with every other game, according to a recent 1UP feature written by Jeremy Parish.

As part of the site’s week-long cover story about “How Comics Shaped Games,” Parish takes a special look at the influence of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and how– despite rare involvement with games himself– his work has inspired many a video game title, from Square’s Final Fantasy II to SEGA’s Skies of Arcadia and Valkyria Chronicles to Capcom’s Mega Man Legends series.

Check out the article for yourself here and see what other games have felt Miyazaki’s influence and how.

    Interesting way to see it. Can’t say I’m pretty knowledgeable on Miyazaki’s works; a sin in many peoples’ books, I’m sure. I can’t say I’m surprised either, since Legends bears reference to other productions, like Yatterman. People will base what they create off of things they grew up with.

  2. Dr. Jerk says:

    I’m more willing to believe that MML was inspired by Yatterman, given that there is an Odate Buta face for Servbots hidden within the game.

  3. HF says:

    Legends and Laputa.
    That is all.

  4. Duckaiser says:

    Well, it’s fine to respect those that came first, and it’s interesting seeing how other people can be so influential, but well…there’s a little thing…like, two people can get the same idea without knowing of the other, even if one came first and is famous already. Famous people get too much credit sometimes. Even when something is famous, not everyone is aware of it automatically.

    I have a hard time believing that Miyazaki created the concept of floating islands. Or that even if he did that no one else would have thought of it anyway.

    And sure, Chocobos do look like Horseclaws, but well…ever heard of a Gastornis?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastornis
    Yeah, credit nature for that one.
    Well, even if the early Chocobos looked kinda like Horseclaws, they’ve evolved to be their own thing.

    And more on topic to Mega Man. Sky pirates, is that really so weird of a concept? You mean to tell me that no one else would think “hey, pirates use ships in the water to get around, but now we have ‘ships’ in the sky! sky pirates!!!”

    So basically I don’t like it when people get put on such a high pedestal and make everyone else just look like copycats.

  5. SketchMan3 says:

    @Duckaiser: But how are you so sure that you’re right? And it doesn’t make everyone else look like copycats. If it makes them look like copycats to you, perhaps you aren’t so secure in your high esteem of said “copycats”?

    It’s no shame to the creators of MML to say they were inspired by Miyazaki. Unless you’ve done research and have evidence to prove otherwise, it could go either way.

    My friend from school didn’t invent “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”, but he just happened to be the first person I heard using that phrase. I’ll credit him for giving me the idea to use the phrase. No big whoop.

    But haters gonna hate, I guess.

    Anyway, this news is nothing new. I heard Disney’s Tailspin was inspired by Miyazaki, too. I wonder if anybody over at Capcom didn’t happen to see an episode of Tailspin and get some ideas…

    :P

  6. Duckaiser says:

    @SketchMan3: I’m not sure of anything, I was mainly trying to say that I don’t think the article is totally right, but I guess I might have come across as being “I’m right, they’re wrong!” Which wasn’t my intention. It doesn’t really make them look like copycats to me, I was just trying to say that’s what it seems like these people are trying to say, and that irks me so.

    I don’t know, there’s nothing wrong with getting inspiration! That’s not what I was trying to say! I’m usually one of the first people to say where I got my inspiration from! For example, when I show someone a picture of a character I made, I usually mention where I got the inspiration from, before I even show the picture! (hmm, you could try clicking on my name for such instances, if you want, sort of shameless advertising, lol, or not, I don’t care, I’m not really trying to prove anything here…)

    It’s just, seeing someone use the phrase “haters gonna hate” directed at me just feels so wrong…I have nothing against Miyazaki, I’ve seen some of his movies and enjoyed them. This isn’t about that at all…

    What my little rant all boils down was basically just I hate how people automatically assume that something similar to something well known and popular HAS to be based on it. I guess using the word “copycat” was exaggerating what they were saying, I’ll admit that I made the mistake of overexaggerating something to try and prove a point. Oh well.

    So…well…I think Capcom made a Tailspin game for the NES. That could mean something, lol

    @SketchMan3
    You could say where’s the direct evidence for the inspiration or whatever else of any of the titles that are being linked to Miyazaki in that article as well. This is basically what Duckaiser is saying, ‘sometimes coincidences are just that’, how you got lost along the way and stated Duckaiser as a hater is confusing me right now…

  8. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    Well its like this to me. I created with a character with an ocarina which I knew what an ocarina was ,but I didn’t know till later there was a character already exisiting who had an Ocarina and because of that I had to change it to a Pan Flute. Thats the way I look at it.Yes the Pan flute is a magical instrament for this character of mine.

    So what does this have to do with the talk of inspiration and originallity? It has basically nothing if its coincidense and simply just bad timing. Granted thats not the point of this article.

  9. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    I mean Miyazaki is a neat use ,but going a long with Ducky there is nothing wrong with inspiration. I mean a good example would be like how Starwars fans when they see another movie of the same genre as a blatant copy of their beloved starwars movies which granted most sci fi flicks after said movies has some elements here and there doesn’t mean that they are unless you really truelly believe that it is or they litterally did just try to go with the success of the said movie.

    I mean look at MMBN its like Tron and pokemon. Look at MMX its pretty much Blade Runner. Look at Megaman its like Astroboy. Its no surprise really that there is inspiration being used ,but out of that the games are its own originallity and even though they did draw upon these sources they are their own expierences and create their own originallity and the results are we got memorable pieces that are at their own level simply famous.

  10. Omar says:

    Saying that Legends was inspired by Miyazaki is like saying soccer was inspired by dinosaurs.

  11. RedrazerZero says:

    @ManwholovesRockamusic
    Yeah EXE is barely like Tron and nothing like Pokemon! Get out of here with THAT!!! F**K!! Also what are you talking about, just like how everyone thought Vava was based on Waba but in actuality based Bubba Zanetti. How pretty much every time Keiji opens his mouth he says that Rockman is a mix of childhood influences yet people stay talking about Astro Boy, while the only similarities reside with in the fact that they are both household boy robots, with an old man scientist mentor and younger sister in a futuristic/robotic setting that under gone changes to fight off other robots, and maybe if you wanna stretch it both have a red rivals kinda and even then its handled very differently. Even Rock’s character design is based on a mix of influences yet people stay on that based on Astro Boy stuff, which btw is also based on a mix of things some unrelated to Rockman entirely. I also don’t know if they publicly announced anything on this (give me the source if so) but they can just as easily discredit that Blade Runner theory. People outside the creative process are the only ones connecting the dots on that one to my knowledge….

  12. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    @RedrazerZero

    Okay. Chill man I wasn’t being literal about it I believe I was trying to say is that their are multiple influences found throught out any games framework and when you start making some comparison that is what happens. Do you remotely understand anything I have said Bra?

    I mean if you look at the article itself the dude whoever wrote this made his comparison and I wouldn’t say its anymore official than if I simply stated that in a similer context. Dude I find you more respectible so do not dissappoint me. Though I do understand your dissagreement ,but I merely put it out there just like that guy who wrote the article because to me thats not good enough proof. Then again I suppose if you don’t know my motives behind my reasoning then I just need to clarify a tad better to create some sort of connection.

    So does this help a little of where I was going with this? What I was saying is anyone could make a comparison. So I just did the same thing. I don’t consider anyone who writes an article like this anymore worthy than a dude who over gratified from 1UP his opinion on the matter by trying to prove that tie in. And yes I am well aware that megaman is by no means based on Astroboy, He is based on other experiences from his creator.

    As for the whole bladerunner theory exactly because people outside the creative process are the only ones connecting the dots. Also the dude may be the guy who can a point a lot better than I can ,but simply just did the same thing because he is also out of the creative process like I am and yourself for that matter.

    My apologies if my reasons disturbed your fung shway because that wasn’t my intention to create a backwards ass comment. LOL in other words have a nice day and then maybe I can up with something better the next time.

  13. RedrazerZero says:

    @ManwholovesRockamusic
    Yeah part of my character is that I desperately hate Pokemon… You know me though and that I would’t get mad unless comically so at something like this, which is what happened here. The first reaction set up the wrong tone for the rest of the comment, but if you pay attention I’m agreeing with you… Worse case is if there was a rebuttal I’d have gone back to my mellow self and let you have it… I should apologize… My apologies.

  14. ManwholovesRockamusic says:

    @RedrazerZero

    No worries.

  15. Gaia says:

    @RedrazerZero:

    Bubba Zanetti is Boba Fett in Japanese? Never knew. I wonder what Luke Skywalker is called in japan now.

    When it comes to drawing human characters myself, most of my influence comes from him. Stuff like robots on the other hand, that’s another story to tell.

  16. RedrazerZero says:

    @Gaia
    Uh no Bubba Zanetti is a character from a live action series call Mad Max, Boba Fett of Star Wars (which was what I originally intended to put down instead of Waba-freaken Pokemon) is a completely different character…

  17. SketchMan3 says:

    @RedRaizer: Yeah, you could say that about any of the other titles. It goes either way, really. He came off pretty strong, which is why I used the “H” word.

    I’m sorry, “Haters” is a strong word. It just gets thrown around so much it loses meaning.

    I found my way back.

    Also, lol at this whole thing.
