Game Center CX Interview with Inafune Translated

Back before Keiji Inafune worked on games where giant spaceships wore his face, and magician’s pulled their spines out of their mouths, he was a high up guy at a certain company called Capcom. One of the games he was known for was this game Mega Man. Maybe you’ve heard of it.

The above video is from one of the original episodes of Game Center CX back in 2003, when Arino focused more on game companies than game challenges. Inafune pops up pretty much from the start, and they get to talking about Mega Man right away. Topics are covered like how Inafune got started and moved up, inspirations behind Mega Man, and of course his love for Zero. The episode is split into four parts, and you can see the rest on Shady0311′s channel, where Inafune goes into talking about what games are to him.

One of the most interesting things to me was, for the time, how much Inafune saw Mega Man as strictly a children’s game, seemingly. Too bad this translation was a bit late; the staff of this site never got the memo.

Thanks for the tip, Magnet_Man!

    Incidentally, I’ve been outside the building shown in the video. It’s not their actual development studio, but just a corporate office or something.

  2. “Meh-guh Maaaaan?” Nope, never heard of it. Start posting relevant stories, Heat!

    Mega Man? No one cares about that kid crap. Isn’t this a Sonic fan site?

    Wow, Inafking lost…

    Should’ve used Zero.

    The challenges are great, but I love the info about the game companies and development just as much. I thought I’d just be watching this for the Mega Man stuff, but almost all of Capcom’s games are interesting to see and remember.

    Bring back Saturday Night Slam Masters!!

    I think its neat the goal for this game series was to give children a smile. It sure did for me when I was young and didn’t give a damn about anything buisness related from capcom. I miss those days very much being unaware and simply enjoying those kiddie games I still love today.

    Making kids smile around the world…

    … I think that was a plot point in the EXE anime.

    @pstart
    I’d like to see Haggar, Strider, Hayato, and Batsu and the gang again too.

    Shoot, I’d like to see Capcom take on another JoJo title. Capcom + JoJo just works.

    Nonsense! Keiji’s art was the best back then.

    I wish they’d sub the two-part Mega Man 4 challenge, but this fansub group has been on a raid subbing episodes lately, so they’ll get to it eventually I’m sure.

    While I always enjoy hearing the voices behind my favorite games, I still can’t help but get annoyed when I hear Inafune state how he intentionally gave Zero most of the spotlight despite it being X’s series. It just seems so unprofessional to me to snub the lead character just because he liked Zero more. Eichiro Oda’s favorite One Piece character is Shanks, yet he makes sure to keep Luffy’s crew the focus of the story, same with Akira Toriyama liking Piccolo the most.

    Inafune is a genius at game design but his story-telling has always been one of his weakest points, IMO.

    @Magnet_Man
    What are you talking about? Those guys just simply like those characters the most due to some sort of personal character trait they share and/or can relate with each other. Never did Oda say he thinks Shanks should get most of the spotlight because One Piece needs a change of pace and it would make the story more interesting. At first Keiji specifically had an intention for the character, later on the intention shifted from the very beginning of the character’s creation (when he was decided to be Zero)… Nothing was reckless or bad about his story telling method in that regard. I will agree though you should not neglect your lead for a major character, but I don’t think he and his team did honestly…
