Need a Mega Man Fix? Maybe Rokko Chan Can Help! (Update)

As 2011 draws to a close, it’s clear that it has not exactly been a banner year for the Blue Bomber when it comes to video game releases. Some might even regard the year as a “Blue Hole” in that respect.

However, Tony Ponce over at Destructoid has come upon a game which may help scratch that itch, at least the part craving some new levels and gameplay. Rokko Chan is a pretty blatant Mega Man clone, and doesn’t try to hide it in the slightest:

[Indie developer] King does not disguise his wholesale copying of the Mega Man formula down to the tiniest dust mote. You have an ensemble of robot villains with “-Man” monikers, facsimiles of Mega Man stock enemies like Mets and Sniper Joes, an evil scientist with a skull motif, amazing chiptune music, disappearing blocks, E-Tanks, passwords, and even a list of achievements straight from Mega Man 9 and 10. Even the name of our star, Rokko Chan, sounds similar to how Mega Man’s Japanese name is read (Rockman -> Rokku Man).

Destructoid goes on to note that the game is full-featured and still manages to add a few twists of its own, such as a tag-team boss battle, Super Castlevania IV-ish rotating rooms, and more. And the best part? It’s free. Plus, for the experts, there is even an optional one-hit mode.

The only issue is that you’ll want to have a controller for your computer handy, with joy2key to help you play. That is, unless you want to test your mettle with the keyboard.

Check out Destructoid for more screens and images from the game.

Update: We’ve received a tip from John Polson that the game has moved to another server, which you can find here. Thanks, John!

She’s a purty cowpoke, ain’t she? Shore is.

  2. MegaManSonicDude says:

I’ve always wanted Capcom to make a female “Mega Man” Type character. Roll…. doesn’t really count if you ask me.

  3. Vucious Creed says:

This game is really good, if you ask me. It’s pretty much what you expect a Mega Man clone should play like (minus a charge shot, if you’re the type that likes that feature). Not to mention the music is fantastic. I’ve been playing it for a few days and haven’t had such fun in a good while. The only thing is that it’s too short; the inclusion of a dash mechanic doesn’t help matters much as far as game length goes, not that I’m complaining about it, that is.

    @MegaManSonicDude

Yeah, I’ve been surprised at the lack of a Mega Woman. Seems like it wouldn’t be hard for Capcom to go the Super Princess Peach route and have Mega Man get kidnapped, or disabled… or something! Heck, since Mega Man is so formulaic, just make it so “Mega Man” (aka Dr. Wily) is behind the most recent attack. Have him take out Proto Man & Bass so Dr. Light is left with one option: upgrade Roll.

    Get on it Capcom!

  5. Megafan says:

    @MegamanSonicDude and Megaseven

Well there is Rockman Ciel. But it’s fan made. But it’s cool. It would fit perfectly after the Zero series and leading into the ZX series. I really like the art work. But if anything for a female Megaman, Rockman Ciel would be best I say.

  6. SorcererLance says:

So… I guess if we were to jokingly localize her name of “Rokko Chan” for western audiences…

    …would she be “Megan”?

  7. Sammy says:

Figures. I play this yesterday and then you guys post it a little more than 24 hours later. XD

This really isn’t bad for a RockMan clone. I wonder how long it took to make?

  8. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

@MegaManSonicDude: Well, there is Aile, for a MegaWoman person.

@Sorcerer Lance: This is rare for me in the internet, but that made me roll on the floor laughing. Seriously.

  9. Wreck says:

Huh you could make a toy of her by just getting the koto rock kit and koto roll kits. THough you’d have to do some modding with the ears, but geez.

  10. Tenryo says:

Have no fear, Tenryo’s here. Some sightly decent news. I kinda enjoyed watching it despite all the attention he’s getting.

I will have to try this joy2key thing later. The keyboard just wasn’t doing it for me. Seems like it could be pretty good once I get that sorted out.

  12. Duckaiser says:

    This is so totally cool!
I love Mega Man himself, don’t get me wrong, but Rokko Chan is super awesome!

This is pretty hard with the keyboard, but I did manage to beat one of the robot masters.

  13. CnCBoy says:

    So awesome.
How could I download it before the Internet delte it?

  14. Tristan says:

I tried playing this just now and O_O wow it’s actually pretty hard,I couldn’t help but notice theirs a Astro Boy like plot in it as well with watching the opening credits

  15. another13 says:

i want to download the game, i hate logging in and seeing the loading screen every time, but i cant find the data in the source code, can anyone help?

  16. giga-ganon says:

posted it yesterday on 100’000 strong facebook

    this game is so awesome!

  17. Gaia says:

    megaseven:

If Zero can get a side series, why not Roll?

  18. Cherry says:

Aw man this game was awesome. As much as i enjoyed Megaman 9 and 10 I feel overall this game was more satisfying. I like the fact they added the dash but didn’t give us a charge shot. I felt like it made you think before you dash, there might be an enemy there. The level design was great too. For the most part it was fresh, not really done with Megaman. That music was really top notch. Sounded more like what i expect out of Capcom than they gave us in the more recent games. Thanks for the heads up about this game! I never would have found it otherwise. =]

  19. Rockman Juno says:

What I like about this game is that it certainly feels like a dead-on Mega Man classic series game. The controls were pretty good (although she definitely jumps higher than Mega Man) despite the keyboard. Sometimes my brain will freeze up and I hit the shoot button when I’m thinking jump; so, if I had access to a controller, yeah, it’d be nicer. I have beaten this game once so far but not without continuing. I have beaten all others without continuing in the classic series, but I’m not ready to anoint this one as the hardest of them all, but Rokko Chan is definitely up there in terms of difficulty for me with, say, Mega Man (1) and Mega Man VII. The music is awesome, and like what Sequelitis said in that video, it was fun to just explore around and know what’s good and what’s bad or whether this kills you or only hurts you. I was tempeted to find a walkthrough but thankfully never found one any way; so, I had to do it on my own. But if anyone wants a suggested order and know some of the robot’s weaknesses…then don’t scroll down unless you go way down to skip the rest of this post:

Start with Rolling Man…he’s the easiest to beat with buster only.

Rolling Man (weak to Jet’s weapon) => Lightning Man (weak to Rolling’s weapon) => Hockey Man (weak to Lightning’s weapon) => Volcano Man (weak to Hockey’s weapon) => Forest Man (weak to Volcano’s weapon) => Jet Man (weak to Forest’s weapon)

The Beetle Jet (Rush Jet rip-off) I think is earned from beating Forest Man.

Mad Stage 1 boss…the yellow guy can only be harmed with the lightning weapon…gray dude can be beaten buster only.

Mad himself: form 1 is weak to Volcano’s weapon, form 2 is weak to Jet’s weapon…form 3 I don’t know…but it’s good to have Rolling’s high range weapon

  20. thecritic says:

The game is awesome but is nowhere near the original megaman games like 9 or 10, the level design of this game is no that great and the sprites lack fluidity, also the controls and rokkochan sprite sucks.

  21. Skybane_Zero says:

Just finished it last night, and, I have to say, I had the time of my life. This turned out to be a really high-quality fan-game.

I really hope this King Soukutu ends up making more of these!

  22. Matthew says:

@Cherry: Yeah, they did that with Megaman 3 too, where you have the slide ability but not the charge shot. I miss being able to slide with Mega…

  23. Matthew says:

Also, it would be nice if someone could translate this into english, or at least write up the english script for it! I want to know the basic plot! *cough cough heatman*

  24. Bob says:

If you’re really into Mega Man clones you guys should check out Rosenkreuzstilette.

  25. Matthew says:

@Bob: Haha! Thanks for the advice! I already have and it’s great! I still have yet to beat it though. I found the wall boss kinda annoying because I kept falling off the small bricks! Oh! And I wanted to find an english patch for the game, but could not find one that worked anywhere. Do you know of any, Bob? Thanks for reminding me about it though. I should go check the website again. The last time I checked, it seemed like the second game was almost completed! I will have to try it when it comes out!

By the way, has anyone here ever tried Giga deep? It’s not as professional as Rosenkreuzstilette or Rokko Chan, but it’s still really fun and has great music!

  26. Matthew says:

Ok, this game is officially amazing and almost perfect in every way. If you only try one stage, make sure its FOREST MANS, and get to the boss, because his stage is amazing and the best stage pretty much in existence. The only thing not perfect from this game, or at least judging by the three stages I have played, is that I guess some of the stage music could have been a bit more noticeable and memorable and the backgrounds could be brighter. Asides from that, this really does seem like a perfect Mega Man game, I mean, it’s got amazing sprites that look like they were designed by Capcom themselves! And the stages themselves are ingenious, fun to play, and challenging but not too hard! Your health also doesn’t seem to go down to fast, which is nice! This game is full of surprises! I just beat hockey man! Anyways, perhaps it’s a bit eraly to review it, as I haven’t tried the other stages, but I think I would give this game a 9.9/10!

  27. Matthew says:

@ Vucious Creed: Really? I use the dash mechanic all the time, and I just started playing it! And yeah, I know what you mean. All the best games are always short and don’t take long to beat!

  28. Cherry says:

@ Matthew: It’s already translated just make sure you change the language to English in the game. =]

  29. Rockman Juno says:

@Matthew…I think at least one of the Mad stages (proportional to what we always know as Wily stages) has a memorable tune (as per the usual for most classic games) as well as either Jet’s or Volcano’s music.

  30. Matthew says:

@Rockman Juno: Thanks! I didn’t notice the language before! I was having too much fun playing around with the controls while waiting for the game to start! I wonder if you can get that weapon with the missiles in the game? Because if you change weapons on the loading screen you get these cool missiles. Anyways, thanks for pointing that out, and yeah, Volcano’s was pretty good!

  31. Glitcher says:

Why are people saying that there is no female Mega Man (or Woman)? Don’t Aile and Ashe count or something?

  32. McWhalen says:

@Glitcher Not enough for them i guess. On my part i always thought we have more than enough female characters in the franchise.Nobody even kidnaps them anyway so i don’t see the point.Maybe that is what this franchise needs.Look at Mario and Zelda.

Back to drawing board for Ransomman

Oh and the game is fantastic.Especially loved the Double boss battle. It felt so…..dynamic.But we need a release the ladder button. Climbing all the way down at tedious speed breaks the flow

  33. Megafan says:

    @Glitcher

I think they mean female Megaman as in her very own series. Aile and Ashe are like optional, either play as the boy or girl. Like either a boy or girl can play the game I guess. But not like full on have their very own game.

  34. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

Now that I think about it, a spin-off Classic game where Dr. Light has no choice in battling Wily except in upgrading Roll is awesome. In fact Rokko Chan, or as Sorcerer Lance has put it, Megan, already looks like Roll in the first place. Though I think it’d be better if she kept the Red motif.

DO IT CAPCOM! It’s essentially a copy-paste thing anyway, and that seems to be what you’re good at.

  35. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

If I’m double posting, I’m sorry. Anyway:

I finally played the game, ’cause I was too busy with chores before now. I gotta say:

Level design is brilliant! It’s the best I’ve seen so far since Rockman Zero Alpha! I’m amazed, since fan games are usually mediocre to feels good. But this is great.

Music is wonderful; the chiptune sounds so awesome to the ear and the music is genius.

Controls. Well, for a guy used to playing MMX8 on PC, unlike you people I actually adapted quite easily to the controls. And it is great. XD

All in all a very good fan game, and that’s saying a lot. :D Hope a “2″ comes along. XD

  36. ZeroX_Syaoran says:

And for this triple post, I’m sorry.

I also like the fact that the game is a Classic series tribute, but the addition of the dash gives you an X vibe. In fact at certain parts of Rolling Man’s stage I actually felt an X vibe. This guy is good.

  37. Well, there is Aile, for a MegaWoman person

Yes. Sure, she was just an optional but at least it was a step forward, specially in a series mega MAN hehe.

I think the most interesting in ZX was the option to have a female Mega Man. It sure was a different concept.

  38. Dr. Ciel says:

    she looks like roll

  39. Matthew says:

@ZeroX_Syaoran: Yeah, I found the controls were easy to use, and the dash was quite nice too! I found it useful, especially in lightning man’s stage and Rolling man’s stage.

  40. Rock-X says:

After having gone through the whole game, I will say this is my new favorite megaman-style game. The style was very retro, the design was pretty to look at, the music felt lively and catchy to listen to, and the challenge was the right balance of being difficult but beatable. If you’re like me (one who palys a lot of Megaman), you will surely recognize where certain sights and sounds took inspiration from specific Megaman games. If you haven’t played it yet, do so right now, because its a blast.
The last thing I will comment about the game is this: See, THIS proves to me that you CAN have a Good Megaman fangame without being a hack.

  41. gutsman004 says:

A very good game overall. There are a few tweaks this game could use to be even better. Mainly, the ability to change the control settings, dailing down on the enemies who constantly respawn should you get hit back or leave the area, enemies that aren’t so stingy with dropping powerups, and having every enemy placed at every critical jumping point.

  42. gutsman004 says:

dialing down and not having every enemy placed at every critical jumping point I meant.

  43. Munchy says:

My main complaint is a kind of inconsistency with how high your jumps are during a dash-jump, but otherwise this game is incredible.

I only wish it were full-screen or a .exe file so I could run it that way properly. :(

  44. Captain says:

Does anyone know if the “Buster Only” challenge allows B.Jet usage?

  45. Laytruce says:

Didn’t have any E tanks left at Dr. Mad. His first and third forms are pretty easy, but his second? No idea how you’d defeat him in the one-hit-kill mode.
