It’s Mega Man vs Dr. Wily and X vs. Zero in GameFAQs’ “Rivalry Rumble”

Oh, the response to this ought to be fun, between it being a poll, involving GameFAQs, and most of all, the debate of whether or not X and Zero are rivals. Whatever, we don’t care, but you can go nuts over it all in the comments.

Anyway, word has come to us from X Master 1000 that GameFAQs is holding yet another of their video game character tournaments. This time, the theme is rivals, and features all manner of competitors, such as Link vs. Ganondorf and Ryu vs. Ken. But rather than pitting them against one-another, this tournament is instead about which rivalry itself is the best, meaning Luigi and Waluigi are, in essence, working together on this one.

And that brings us to the Mega Man portion of the tournament bracket. In fact, there are two, as Mega Man and Dr. Wily predictably square off in the “South Division,” and will soon be up against the pairing of Zidane and Kuja. Elsewhere, the upcoming “Northeast Division” final will be X vs. Zero against Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion.

Quite frankly, we don’t like their odds, given that we imagine most people who would vote and get the series some much-needed attention won’t even consider the two rivals, and just let it lie. Plus, Mortal Kombat just had that nifty reboot earlier this year…

Anyway, there it is. You can find all the polls, past and present, right here.

    Gamefaqs should just stick to what they are…game faqs. These character tournaments are a joke since most of the voters are hard core RPG fans so pretty much any really popular RPG character is going to win it.

  2. Cuttingitup says:

    It’s going to end up being Link vs. Cloud like always.

  3. Bob says:

    People still care about these stupid tournaments?

  4. Will says:

    @gutsman004:
    They can do something fun every once in a while, can’t they?

    This is my life on The Mega Man Network now….<(insert bum image in your heads when reading)

    I think my bracket has Mega Man vs Dr. Wily winning it. Not really rivals, but archenemies or something. I dunno, but how much they clash has gotta mean something.

    This tournament is a total joke though. People don’t even care about the strength or depth of the so-called rivalries, they just choose their favorite characters. I mean, Crono vs Lavos? Rivals?? Just another excuse to get more Chrono Trigger characters in, because it’s popular. It totally destroyed the entire purpose and theme of the contest!

    I visit GameFAQs regularly, but thanks for bringing this up LBD.

    X and Zero are rivals in the truest sense of the word. They’re friends first and foremost, they help each other out all the time, but there’s a silent and sometimes not-so-silent competitiveness between them to see who’s the better hunter. After Zero brought X to realize his true potential in X1, the two were neck and neck, perhaps not actually knowing they were competing until things came to a head in X5 (although plenty of hints were certainly dropped about X and Zero being destined to clash).

    The legendary Reploid forefathers were created specifically to oppose one another, but ended up becoming friends on top of it. You can’t make a better rivalry than that.

  8. HeatPhoenix says:

    X and Zero aren’t even rivals.
    They’re partners.

    Sonic and Knuckles are rivals, Sonic and Shadow. Mario and Luigi are not.

  9. I like Trigger’s take.

    And in case anyone was wondering, Mega Man vs. Dr. Wahwee is up as I type this, and they’re winning by a large margin over Zidane vs. Kuja.

    Mmmm… I never really saw X and Zero as rivals all this time. But now that I think about it, even that very cool pic of the two back to back supposedly showing “Yeah, we got each other’s backs!” has Zero looking away and making us wonder: “Do they REALLY got each other’s backs? Do they REALLY?”

    In the end, the answer is always “Yes”… and that is why they are awesome partners! :D

    @Trigger: What you say makes sense, too. Well spoken, man. ^-^

    @HeatPhoenix:

    Rivalry doesn’t imply anything other than a mutual acknowledgement of each other’s competence and a mutual competitiveness (meaning partnership often includes some degree of rivalry). X and Zero definitely have that going. Your Sonic examples are also valid by this definition. Mario and Luigi is a bit more vague, because Luigi is definitely competitive but Mario is usually ignoring him, removing the “mutual” component and turning it into the oft-cliched sibling rivalry.

    I think we can all agree that Crono and Lavos are definitely NOT rivals, though. Pretty sure an ancient being of infinite destruction isn’t about to acknowledge the relative competence of a young boy and his ragtag team of time-traveling would-be heroes.

  12. Puffball says:

    I don’t consider X and Zero rivals. I admit, Trigger’s take is some interesting food for thought, but for me rivals aren’t nearly as close as X and Zero are. They’re comrades in arms, equals, and most of all, partners and brothers. Regular rivals don’t have that kind of devotion to each other.

    I never thought they competed or anything, but if they did they’d probably make into a casual game every so often. I think the only instance I think of is when Zero calls dibs on any “goodies” found in Command Mission (I gotta tell ya, that fired me up to get as many items as possible XD). So yeah, maybe in some sense of the term “rival”, but they’re still friends first. Most of the other rival teams aren’t.
