Mega Man Fighting Game Round-Up: Release Dates, Rumors, and Rebuttals
Hmm, with all of those R’s in the headline, perhaps I should have said “Rockman” instead.
Anyway, a few items of interest hit our Inbox today, and they all involve Mega Man in fighting games. Note that I didn’t specify Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3… but more on that in a minute.
The first item comes to us from GameSpot by way of DaiSanSei, and is a full breakdown and release schedule for all of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 downloadable costumes. The downloadable costume for Zero of Mega Man X will be available alongside Hawkeye’s Ronin costume, UDON’s Taskmaster, and Trish’s Gloria costume in a pack collectively known as “The Weapon Expert Pack.” It will cost $4 on the PlayStation Network, or 320 points if you’re with Xbox LIVE, and won’t be available until near the tail-end of the run on February 7th next year.
February 21st will see the release of five character costumes for the same price in “The Viewtiful Strange Pack.” This includes Tron Bonne in her Servbot-styled Gustaff, Phoenix Wright in his college attire, not-so Viewtiful Joe, a Nova costume which “is so fresh, it’s based on something that hasn’t even been revealed yet,” a retro look for Dr. Strange, and an alternate costume for the Dread Dormammu.
If you can’t wait that long to infuse a little more Blue into your team, then you may want to tell your story to the most hardcore video game journalist around, Frank West. His “Rising Dead Pack” comes out on November 22nd for the same prices noted above. It also includes Ghost Rider 2099 (who apparently also helps fill out the “robot” quotient), a charred form of Nemesis, and The Queen of the Revolving Door of Death herself, Jean Grey/Phoenix.
Now, throughout this whole Marvel vs. Capcom 3 brouhaha, one argument which has come up now and again is that Mega Man is essentially the mascot for Capcom, which is why the inclusion of a Blue Bomber in the game would be warranted, regardless of which tag (if any) one were to attach to the end. But a rumor from Clown Prince of Crime suggests that he may yet find his way into such a role as only he could fill it.
According to Clown Prince of Crime– or C-PoC, if I may– a fellow by the name of Lupinko has been known to leak rosters for such fighting games as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and even Mortal Kombat 9. What’s more, as C-PoC tells us, they have turned out to be true.
With that, he turns our attention to a recent tweet from Lupinko, which states:
Everybody will love the yellow dude’s style, but blue boy will cause lots of lols or lots of rage, wait and see! Excelsior!
Interesting. According to C-PoC, this is in reference to the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken collaboration between Capcom and Namco. Naturally, “the yellow dude” is likely Namco mascot Pac-Man, with “blue boy” being Mega Man. Talk about fighting Man to Man…
Of course, that is still just a rumor for now, but one which may have some weight behind it, if Lupinko’s record is indeed true.
Finally, since it seems like it would fit in here, JayKay54 passed along a quick piece he wrote about X’s absence from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom with the consideration that maybe the cobalt-colored Maverick Hunter doesn’t really belong in there after all. It’s an interesting idea, though we think that with the impending threat of Galactus looming, X might feel just a little differently on the matter.
Besides, we got the lawyer with his girl sidekick and dog; I imagine he’d rather handle his battles from behind the defense stand, too.

HeatPhoenix: In Sonic terms, I think we’re in our Saturn era… at least, that’s what it feels like at the moment. Let’s hope it doesn’t last nearly as long.
It’s kind of ridiculous to say that Mega Man X doesn’t belong in MvC3 for canonical reasons when the game lets Chris team up with Wesker and Nemesis, Arthur with Firebrand, Dormammu with Dr Strange, or the dozen other canonically impossible teams you can get to fight each other in MvC3.
Wouldn’t Mega Man X’s moral code make it impossible for him to fight the majority of the characters in that game? I just wrote a post about that in a forum a few days ago. He’s just so righteous, I couldn’t see him beating up on some poor super-powered humans.
Now, if it was Copy X, that’d be a different story…
It’d be pretty awesome to see Megaman and Pac-Man duke it out.
@Clown Prince of Crime
I’m pretty sure Model M thinks Toro, Kuro, Cole and Pac-Man don’t belong either. Judging from the bold STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN statement.. Don’t try and make people look crazy just because you’ve excepted the game’s quirks…
With that said, man who cares? That game doesn’t look serious anyway, and like Clown Prince of Crime states, it already has characters that don’t belong, if Rock gets in now it will do no harm. If Rock has a halfway decent model, and has a decent moveset, and you just so happen to own the game, don’t fuss, by all means wup ass with him.. geez..
Megaman KO’d Ryu and Jin Kazama in one combo! Megality!
@Sketchman3
His moral code is the same as pretty much every moral hero character: “Only fight when necessary”. And how many Reploids does X murder per game compared to how many he arrests?
Isn’t Chris beating up on normal people? Isn’t Captain America fighting civilians in this?
Also….this game is not canon. It’s a crossover. What was MegaMan’s motivations in MvC1 and 2? What was Volnutt’s motivation in TvC? How did EXE join Onimusha Blade Warriors when he’s just a computer program AND be joined by MMZ Zero? How can a human reporter like Frank West defeat the Hulk using a broom? How do the normal people survive getting shot by Deadpool, a whole damn lot at that? How is Wright’s nightmare of a giant judge actually hurting people? For that matter, what in the name of hell is happening during Wright’s Turnabout mode?
I have to say this to anyone “basing arguments on game canon” in a crossover: It is just –there’s no polite way to say this, so I’ll just say it– stupid as all hell and embarrassing to watch. Like “Rick Perry debate” embarrassing. You need to knock it off if you hope to have any credibility.
@Magnet_Man
Uh actually a lot of the stuff in CapcomvsSNK was canon. Rockman EXE can materialize in different ways and has been known to in games such as Boktai, and their crossover with Rockman was canon.. Just sayin not debating…
I hate capcom increasingly, it is assumed that X would be a extra character not a costume to zero,why not give the opportunity to X, that frustrating.
why does Lupinko’s last tweet sounds more Phoenix Wright-y than Megaman-ish? this guys’ hints give me quite the headdache
@ManwholovesRockamusic
The guy from Infamous, Cole, is in the PS3 version, and he’s neither Tekken nor Capcom… and the PS Vita version has these weird… cats that are apparently from Sony also are in it. None of those three characters are going to appear in the 360 version.
@NovaManXP: I’m assuming the 360-exclusive will be Master Chief (or an Elite).
As it has been said thousands upon thousands of times by Mega-fans across the globe:
Megaman X in UMvC3 or gtfo.
Seriously, taking Megaman/Megaman X out of MvC3/UMvC3 is essentially the exact same as taking Mario or Link out of ANY Super Smash Bros. game, which to simply fathom of such a thought is frankly Nuckin’ Futs.
A Pac Man/ Mega Man tag team would make the six year old in me extremely happy… but my six year old is also not very smart sometimes.
@Munchy: It’s a good thing video-games are more about what’s fun and not about what’s smart, right? =P
I must say that SFxT hadn’t really caught my atraction and the possibility of Megaman bieng on it has awaken something on me, but with Crapcom’s trolling lately, I also fear we might not like what we’ll see.
X being just a skin for Zero pretty much states it: “Mega Man is just a shadow of what he was”
I find it insulting that just because Capcom have a grudge against Inafune we, the Mega Man fans have to pay for it.
This is stupid. Saying X wouldn’t fight is almost like arguing why hagger couldn’t fight the hulk. This is a cross over fighter nothing lives up to true cannon.
By this logic Zero should already be labeled a maverick just for fighting with humans.
There is no excuse, the game was rushed before, Ultimate had a bit more time but was rushed for the holiday season, if the game had more time we would see X and Gene for sure.
I cant say anything about the marvel votes.
Grude against Inafune?? Inafune created Zero and Tron… He didnt make Mega Man, also he worked on X but really didnt create him either, he wanted to make Zero series rather then the X series, but capcom wanted megaman so X was created for snes.
Him not being in the game has nothing to do with Inafune, I mean look at frank west…
