Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Wants Mega Man?
The presence of Phoenix Wright as one of the long-awaited additions to Capcom’s fighting game roster has not been one of the company’s better-kept secrets. And yes, you read that correctly: Capcom managed to find a way to include the unincludable, while not having any idea of how to possibly fit Mega Man into a fighting game (three prior inclusions notwithstanding, apparently).
But, we digress. The company has officially revealed the inclusion of not only their Ace Attorney, but also Marvel’s Nova in a series of new trailers, screens, etc.
However, N-n-N (that’s “Nick ‘n Nova”) aren’t the only new reveal; a background based on the iconic cover from the X-Men “Days of Future Past” storyline is also there, and it has been modified to be accepting of more characters than just mutants… or even just Marvel, for that matter. Take a look:
Notice anything on the “wanted” poster?
Among the flood of tips we’ve received about this, a few of you have also included a close-up image of the poster itself. Have a look:

For comparison, here is the original cover:

That’s right: replacing Wolverine as the sole survivor from Marvel and Capcom parties alike is none other than the original Blue Bomber, Mega Man. What’s more, as Wilynumber13 says, the entire poster is characters who were in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but didn’t make the cut for 3, many of which are marked as “apprehended” or “slain.”
Naturally, this has led to much speculation. Some people believe this is Capcom’s way of mercilessly mocking fans of the Rock, while others believe this is their way of instilling hope, perhaps even hinting at a little plasma power coming our way through downloadable content. Though frankly, we believe that if it were the former, he’d be in one of the other spots.
So, what’s the real story?
Well, according to some responses in an Ask Capcom thread about this very subject, moderator Zonic says that it is merely a cameo, and that “it was never meant to be a hint of some sort.”
Member Nathan adds “A guy interviewed Sven about UMvC3 and the poster was one of the things that came up. Sven said it was just a bit of fun and meant nothing. Good news for fans of Psylocke, Rogue, Jin Saotome, Captain Commando, Cyclops, Gambit, BB Hood, Ruby Heart, Ice Man, Colossus, the monkey girl and cactus guy, Cable, Marrow, and Hayato. Bad news for Mega Man fans.”
Incidentally, Sven himself said that the person interviewed was “probably Seth… wasn’t Sven. I’ve conducted no interviews (I’m buried under mountains of work back at the office).”
Edit: And it turns out it was indeed Seth, as seen around five minutes into this video (via Protodude):
In any case, it doesn’t sound good for Mega Man fans who wish to play as the Blue Bomber in this epic clash.
Thanks to EVERYONE who sent this in! The whole lot of you!

@The_R
You “X” fanboys really are a separate entity in this fanbase aren’t ya?
Classic Mega Man should really be in this game before any other character.
Why? Well let’s see you already have your X-Series representative…Zero. We already have a Legends series representative…Tron. Now all we need is a representation from the Classic Series and since we actually need a “Mega Man” in here and we really REALLY do. That leaves us with? That’s right the character that started it all…MEGA MAN himself. Without whom there would be no X, Zero, Tron, Volnutt, or any other Mega Man related characters.
As for recent fan involvement? When’s the last time X got a game (That’s not just a collection or a remake)? Oh right….in 2004. When was Classic Mega Man’s last game…ah…LAST YEAR!!!
So MvsC fans hate Classic in fighting games do they? You’re speaking for the whole fanbase of MvsC now are ya? I dunno….I’ve loved MvsC games up until this one and who was my favourite character to use in all of them? Mega Man of course. I know of several (at least 10 in person…remember I’m only one person….I’ve seen a lot more support on internet boards) people who used him as part of their teams in MvsC 1 and 2 and won many tournaments with him.
Now I love ALL of Mega Man’s incarnations and X is one of my favourites but Classic > X at least in terms of choice in a game like this. If they didn’t have Zero in here already then maybe I could see it making more sense to throw X in. Also if X does manage to get in here then terrific….I will be ECSTATIC!!! But I still think that Classic should be in here first.
@Oni and McWhalen: Sarcasm is something I always fail at when I cause people to take me too seriously. That aside, I am happy for other characters getting in, though I thought sharing such a feeling would cause a few folks to flame me for not caring about Mega Man (when I do). There are people who can n’ have defended both Capcom and unhappy fans better than me. But I’m going to be brave by sharing what I wanted to say in the other post.
(general comment): I did read Shotoman’s post before making my first and his was very strong. *Most* (not all) of the anger coming from us looks super repetitive and one-sided. Right now, I imagine why many are annoyed/bothered by others wanting Mega Man and those being upset with his possible exclusion. I am concerned, not annoyed. And I doubt I’m the only one feeling that way. It seems like whenever Capcom tries to prove they didn’t abandon the Blue Bomber and his counterparts, we only find reasons to build up the fire. But plenty of fans are not just finding reasons. They are convinced Capcom literally hates Mega Man.
Other fans have tried to calm down the anger, yet it continuously grows. UMvC3 is a video game seemingly surrounded by flame wars. The first game I’ve seen with this much drama attached. If Capcom never adds a Mega Man incarnation to UMvC3, I say, “Unfair..but not the end of the world.”
We totally can’t or shouldn’t even try to control how another person feels. If we can deal with something compared to someone else, that isn’t something to gloat about. Mocking other fans isn’t right. :/ If we can’t get what we want in a game and we see fans who are able to face facts or possibilities, why instantly assume they don’t care? Why not walk in another person’s shoes (including those belonging to fans of other Capcom characters)?
@Airman
“He doesn’t physically fight anyone in his games.”
Neither do any of FPS nor Genius Super Villain characters in Marvel Vs. Capcom.
I call you, and others, selfish due to the fact that it wasn’t a ‘Pheonix Wright or Mega Man’ situation – you seriously want to exclude a character just because your favourite wasn’t included.
@Oni
Uhmm.. Yes they do.. I agree with you though, MvC isn’t the most logical, serious crossover fighter. I don’t think people have the right to complain about Phoenix Wright’s inclusion in the game because he doesn’t fight.
Zat don’t effect me. Found it cute, though. *shrugs*
@RedrazerZero
Shooting zombies and using mind powers isn’t technically ‘fighting’, even in the loosest sense of the word. At least you understand where I’m coming from though.
Yeah, but Chris physically fights zombies off when needed (not to mention pulverizes boulders barehanded) and uses weaponry equipped on him to defend himself close range. Same can be said for Modok with the weapons and what have you, Capcom actually nail his fighti-ah.. combat style dead on in particular. Anyway yeah they engage in physical battle often (more so and at a grander scale than Phoenix at least) … Yeah that stuff doesn’t matter in MvC though, or things would have turned out differently for many characters.
@RedrazerZero and Oni: Oni, I’m sorry if I misinterpreted your other post before. I agree with you both about people bashing Phoenix Wright’s inclusion. Folks complaining about a “Wright over Rock” may also be due to the cancellation of Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe. In the eyes of multiple fans, the Blue Bomber’s been mistreated far enough. Since Wright “isn’t on Rock’s level” as a Capcom character, various unhappy fans may see this as insulting Mega Man.
In the original MvC3, there were characters I didn’t really bother playing as. Never did I feel they should have been replaced by a Mega Man incarnation. It would have been factually wrong to the players who loved such characters. To me, it’s like Rock-paper-scissors. If something isn’t to my liking, that is my “personal weakness”. Yeah, I’ve been selfish at times with what I wanted in a game. But I also have a way of debating against myself a lot.
I see Phoenix Wright’s inclusion as breaking his limits (which is a good thing). My words to people who say he never even fought are, “Neither did characters (outside of Capcom) like R.O.B. or Mr. Game & Watch, right? Why underestimate them?”
It is insulting Mega Man, he was one of Crapcom’s first 2 real game breaking characters that became their posterboy mascots (Mega Man and Ryu…well, okay 3 (Captain Commando) but Mega Man and Street Fighter were there two huge sellers that made them the powerhouse company that they are today). Having Ryu in here and not Mega Man is basically Crapcom shunning Mega Man and spitting on his fans. Crapcom claimed that they wanted to showcase new characters from their more recent titles which is fine…but then there should be no Ryu, Chun-Li, Akuma, Morrigan, Felicia, Jill Valentine, etc. in the game either. With a statement like that it’s all or nothing really.
@ Oni
No if you bothered to read my earlier post I pointed out that PW doesn’t belong because he doesn’t fit the game genre not because Mega Man’s not in it. I stated out right that Mega Man should be there before ANY other character right now not just PW (Frank West was another big groaner for me). Also shooting zombies and using mind powers the way these characters do IS actually fighting…it’s just not hand to hand combat. What PW does in the courtroom in his games constitutes conflict but it is not combat which is something that a character like Mega Man does. Making a moveset up for a non-fighting character when there are perfectly legible and easier to program characters such as Mega Man available is what really insulted me….that and Crapcom’s half-assed and weak excuses as to why they didn’t include Mega Man.
Glancing over this, I assume by “shooting zombies,” we’re talking about Chris, and not Frank? Because Frank does a lot of melee and kicks and the like…
Anyway, I don’t really mind Phoenix Wright being in there; I just find it amusing that they say they can’t put him in, yet manage to fit him in before a character they’ve already had before (two versions, even, in Classic and Volnutt), citing that they don’t know how he’d fit.
And by “amusing,” I mean “I don’t even listen to this guy (Niitsuma) any more.”
^This….exactly.
@Airman and LBD: Didn’t someone say Mega Man wasn’t gonna bring anything new to the table at first? Man..I don’t know what to believe from Capcom anymore about not knowing how to fit him in. Do you think Zero would have been out of luck for TvC had Volnutt included the Blade Arm to his arsenal? I sorta do, and in my strongest opinion up-to-date, Capcom could have found a way for Mega Man’s presence despite some similarities he shares with Zero. Right now, I am confused about the excuses, reasons, and all. -.-
I still say Capcom’s blowing smoke on this one. They haven’t once given a solid reason for leaving Megaman out. I’m still sticking to my theory of them holding him for DLC.
@LBD you said it mister
@LBD
I find it amusing that most of the people here whining are doing so whilst acting like putting Mega Man in the game is as simple as ‘he already had a move set in MvC2, so why not?’
@Airman
Mega Man holds no more right to be in this game any more than any other character. You’re just being selfish, and Phoenix Wright is the victim of your selfishness.
@ Oni
Well said. TBH. I never used Megaman in the last two games. I know people who did and have gotten over that he isn’t in the third installment. I am also tired f hearing. “CAPCOM HATES MEGAMAN!” or “MEGAMAN DIED WHEN INAFUNE LEFT!”
Know what I am surprised they never added in this game? Onimusha characters. As for Phoenix? I never played his games.
@Oni
In that case you can say that about many things. Breath of Fire fans can be like, ‘why does Phoenix Wright get a rep, and so much support that’s just selfish’, even the very concept of fan favorites would break if there were no selfishness and everything was fair. Not only that but the roster in that case would be way different.
@RedrazerZero
The difference between Breath of Fire and Mega Man is that Breath of Fire isn’t represented at all, whilst Mega Man is already represented by two characters.
No, no, I’m with you on this one I’m just saying the wording and way used to describe your point, had its flaws. I also like to play advocator.. Far be it for me to talk anyway, if it were up to me it wouldn’t even be MvC it would just be M(Megaman). So I’m the most selfish one of all, and need people like you to keep me in my place..
Well, you were taking my usage of ‘selfish’ the wrong way. That’s why I put it in perspective in my previous comment.
If someone was upset that a Breath of Fire character wasn’t represented, despite a new BoF game coming out soon, I really wouldn’t have anything to say about it. However, the Mega Man franchise is already represented by two characters. It’s kinda like the difference between a guy at the table who got no slices of pizza complaining about other people not giving him a piece and the guy who has already had two pieces doing the same.
Naturally I’d like more new Mega Man video game stuff myself, but I’m honestly not going to start spouting things like ‘such and such a character doesn’t belong in such and such a game’ just because I didn’t get my way.
@People calling others selfish:
Please calm down. As frustrated as you may be, I’m also bothered by a few of the complaints. You make good points but are those kind of adjectives thrown at other posts necessary? No one is victimizing any character. The complaining does seem mostly one-sided. And I think many of us need to cool off. -No offense, but the complaints about the “whining” together with some of the “Capcom hates Mega Man” stuff from the other side is seriously bothering me now. You may be able to enjoy one game without a favorite character (so can I), but it IS hard for other fans going by the different bad news about Mega Man. We’re all different.
@People saying Capcom hates Mega Man:
I strongly feel we’re making it harder for other fans to move on about his absence in MvC3 (and if we have to for UMvC3.) :/
@Airman:
In my opinion, saying Phoenix Wright does not belong in a fighting genre is wrong. Is it bad to artistically make use of a character with potential others may see and value? Let’s say I had a favorite character I never knew outside of a fighting game. A few years later, I find out some interesting facts. In his/her own games, that one fictional entity engaged in absolutely no combat in comparison to their fighting counterpart. Instead, they were an anime-styled critic who bashed tons of horror flicks with a hammer (metaphorically). Would it not be wrong for me to say they don’t belong where they are included now?
I really wish people would read first and think about things before launching a whining backlash….*sigh*….oh well.
@Oni and Braito
Again if you had bothered to actually READ the posts I said earlier and NOTICE what I said…..I never said I’m trying to victimize any character here and I said OPENLY that Phoenix Wright (PW) is a GREAT character and he DOES deserve representation in an amalgamated character game. What I said was that this game was not the game to do it in….or at least not the way to do it. If you look at his moves they’re all gimmicky, ridiculous, and over the top (I mean I can’t tell if he’s actually fighting or simply tripping and losing his case notes half the time). I’m aware that to a certain extent this is the way he and his characters behave in his games but the way these moves look in this setting?…If I was a big fan of PW I would consider this more of an insult to PW’s integrity as a character more than a tribute.
Let me see if I can put this from another perspective. Say you’re an employee for a large company and you’ve been working there for over 20 years. You work very hard, you make the company lots of money, become very skilled at your job and you are a jovial and well liked employee by all your coworkers, your clients, and (at least you thought) your boss. You notice that there is a promotion opportunity coming up that you’ve prepared for your whole career and you can’t wait to be selected as the recipient of this position. Then you find out that a (relatively) new person with 1/4 of the skill and experience as you gets the job instead because they’re younger and the boss really doesn’t like you as much as you thought. How would you be feeling? That’s right you’d be crushed. Then when you ask your boss why you didn’t get the job they don’t even be straight with you and tell you some bs about them not being able to “fit you in” for this position and that they want you to “keep up the good work” with a feeble pat on the back.
Is us as Mega Man fans (it’s not just about me here by the way) wanting a character in this game that’s basically helped carry Crapcom for 23+ years and has been beloved (to various degrees) by millions of people worldwide to be represented fairly in a game like this really selfish? I don’t think so.
Is you wanting your character to be in there selfish? No not really but I just wish you would stop and look at things logically without just crying and calling me selfish. Give me a real argument in your favour rather than just saying “you’re selfish”. Mega Man does deserve to be in here more than any other character right now….but NOT because we want him to be….it’s for the reasons I posted here and in my previous posts as well (go back and read them again).
@Airman:
I wasn’t attacking ya. If you’re including me in calling you selfish, I was doing the exact opposite of saying such. I was looking at more than one side. -.- The whining backlash IS another thing getting me upset, too. And I’m sorry for giving you the wrong idea, but Airman, I was telling some folks that “accusing others of victimizing a character was wrong”. The first part of my previous post wasn’t aimed at you…Please chill out..
Like I said, compared to me, there are people who can do a better job of defending both Capcom and fans. Airman, I can’t change the way you or anybody else feels. I’m not trying to. What’s happening to Mega Man is uncool.
Simply wanting your character in a game is NOT selfish. You’re right. But Oni is correct about some things, too. Like a friend told me, we all have our opinions and points. I just dislike how loads of us fans are turning against each other (and in a one-sided manner).
@Airman
It’d be nice if you could make the same post, but extract the words ‘crying’ and ‘whining’ from it. Because if you seriously think that’s what my and others’ posts were portraying, you should work on interpreting text.
No, it’s not selfish to want a character in a game. It IS selfish to want ANOTHER character again as a result of your wanted character NOT getting and then complaining about the character that DID get in when the franchise you like is already represented by two characters. How hard is that to understand? No amount of ‘I’m not being selfish’ changes that you are being selfish.
P.S. Saying a character is ‘great’ but then turning around and saying they don’t deserve/fit to be in a non-serious fighting game is the same as saying ‘no offence’ before saying something offensive.
Sorry Braito I was just trying to make a combined retort to both your comments. I know you didn’t say those things so no worries.
@ Oni
Okay, I’m though trying to reach you on this kid….seriously you’re what? 12? 13? Because that’s what I’m getting from your attitude here. I’ve tried explaining this to you in as plain English as I possibly can and you’re still just not getting it….so, I wash my hands of this.
Anyways folks sorry if I caused you any trepidation but I’m done on this topic, see you all around the boards.
@Airman
The proof that you’ve stopped contributing to an argument is when you start off by trying to insult the other party.
Can we all just be happy that the others have theirs? And that Zero was intended to be a Mega Man in the first place? Maybe Capcom used Zero in memory of Inafune-sans departure. Can’t we just enjoy that Phoenix Wright fans are happy by this? Can’t we enjoy that the Mega Man Inafune-san wanted to be a Mega Man in the first place be there? Don’t get me wrong I want the Blue Bomber to be in the game as much as the next guy, but remember that we’re not the only fans who were upset that the series we want weren’t in the game, hell I was glad that M.Haggar was in the game do you know how long a Final Fight game was made? Or how about Arthur? Even Nathan Radd Spencer. Everyone please be happy towards the other fans. Maybe we will get our Megs back in the game. And if Capcom is reading this. If you do bring Classic back switch Tornado Hold with Tornado Blow and Leaf Shield with Water Shield, keep the Rock Ball. His -> H should be the Charge Kick. For Hyper Combos take out the Beat Plane for Rain Flush, keep Hyper Mega Man, and Rush Drill for Pharaoh Shot. That should make things different.
